Fatal Error. 'Internal Error 2343' (MSI Error 2343) Displays During Software Installation in Windows XP

This document is for HP printer software installations in Windows XP for all HP LaserJet printers and for all HP inkjet printers released in 2009 or earlier.
While you install the HP software, a fatal error message displays on the computer: Internal Error 2343 .
This error message displays in Windows when the registry keys interrupt or prevent software installation.

Solution one: Delete the registry keys

Follow these steps to remove registry keys.
CAUTION:An incorrect registry entry might cause serious system problems or prevent the computer from starting. Always backup your registry.

Step 1: Back up the registry

Follow these steps to make a backup of the registry to restore the files.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the product.
  2. Click Start , and then click Run .
  3. In the open box, type regedit , and then click OK .
    The Registry Editor opens.
  4. Click File , and then click Export .
  5. In the Save in box, select Desktop .
  6. In the File Name text box, type HPBackup .
  7. In the Save as Type box, select Registration Files .
  8. In Export Range , select All .
  9. Click Save .
    The exported registry file saves on the Desktop.

Step 2: Remove keys from the Features folder

Follow these steps to delete the keys from the Features folder.
NOTE:Most of the entries should have an AiO, PSC, or HP Officejet reference listed.
  1. In the Registry Editor , click the Plus sign ( ) next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER .
  2. Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER , click the Plus sign ( ) next to Software .
  3. Under Software , click the Plus sign ( ) next to Microsoft .
  4. Under Microsoft , click the Plus sign ( ) next to Installer .
    NOTE:If the Installer folder does not exist under HKEY_CURRENT_USER , look under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT .
  5. Under Installer , click the Plus sign ( ) next to Features .
  6. Under Features , search for and delete all of the keys listed below (some keys might not be present).

  7. Click the Minus sign ( ) next to Features .

Step 3: Remove keys from the Products folder

  1. Under Installer , click the Plus sign ( ) next to Products .
  2. Under Products , search for and delete all of the keys listed below (some keys might not be present).
    To delete a key, click the key to select it and then press Delete on the keyboard.

  3. Click the Minus sign ( ) next to Products .
  4. Click the Minus sign ( ) next to Installer .
  5. Click the Minus sign ( ) next to Microsoft .
  6. Click the Minus sign ( ) next to Software .
  7. Click the Minus sign ( ) next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER .

Step 4: Remove keys from the Uninstaller folder

  1. In the Registry Editor , click the Plus sign ( ) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE .
  2. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE , click the Plus sign ( ) next to Software .
  3. Under Software , click the Plus sign ( ) next to Microsoft .
  4. Under Microsoft , click the Plus sign ( ) next to Windows .
  5. Under Windows , click the Plus sign ( ) next to CurrentVersion .
  6. Under CurrentVersion , click the Plus sign ( ) next to Uninstall .
  7. Under Remove , search for and delete all the keys listed below (some keys might not be present).
    To delete a key, click the key to select it and then press Delete on the keyboard.

  8. Close the Registry Editor .

Solution two: Uninstall and reinstall the HP software

Follow these steps to completely uninstall and reinstall the HP software.

Step 1: Perform a level-three uninstall

Use one of the following methods to remove the HP software.
If you have not previously downloaded the software from the HP website, follow these steps to remove the software.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. Open a new window to browse to the Get Software and Drivers page: Get Software and Drivers .
  4. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
  5. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver , and then click the driver that you want to download.
  6. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  7. Click Download . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
  8. Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file. Consider saving the file to your desktop for easy reference later in these steps.
  9. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
  10. When the download completes, click Start , and then click Search . The Search Results window opens.
  11. Under What do you want to search for? , click All files and folders .
  12. Type Uninstall_L3 in the first search box, and then click Search .
  13. Double-click the Uninstall_L3.bat file. If there is more than one file in the search results, expand the In Folder column, and look for the file that is located in the Temp folder with 7zXXX.tmp in the filename (XXX varies by driver version). The HP uninstaller opens.
    NOTE:If the Welcome to HP! screen opens, click Cancel or Exit .
  14. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the level-three uninstall.
If you have and want to use the HP software CD, follow these steps to remove the software. Otherwise, use the previous method to remove the software.
  1. Insert the HP Software CD into the computer's CD drive.
  2. If the Welcome to HP! screen opens, click Cancel or Exit .
  3. On the Windows taskbar, click Start , and then click Run . The Run window opens.
  4. On the Run window, click Browse . The Browse window opens.
  5. Navigate to the CD drive on your computer (you can find the CD drive by clicking My Computer, usually), right-click the file, and then click Open .
    NOTE:If you double-click the file, the HP Installer launches. Click Exit , and then right-click the file to open.
  6. Double-click the Utility folder, and then double click the ccc folder. A list of files on the software CD displays.
  7. Double-click the Uninstall_L3.bat file. The Run window opens again, with the path to the Uninstall_L3.bat file displayed.
  8. Click OK to start the level-three uninstall, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Step 2: Reinstall the HP software

HP recommends that you download and install the software from the HP website. This software is the most current and contains updates that might not be on your software CD.
If you have already downloaded the software, you do not have to download it again. Otherwise, follow these instructions to download and install the software.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. Go to HP Drivers & Downloads . If prompted, type your printer model number, click Go , and then click Drivers .
  4. Make sure that your operating system is selected, and then click Next .
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver .
  6. Click Download , and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
  7. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads ), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Solution three: Edit the registry

Follow these steps to edit the registry, and then export and merge the installer keys.

Step 1: Export the installer keys

Follow these steps to export and delete the installer keys.
CAUTION:An incorrect registry entry might cause serious system problems or prevent the computer from starting. Always backup your registry.
  1. Right-click on an unused portion of the Windows Desktop, click New , and then click Folder .
  2. Type the name Installer Keys and then press Enter on the keyboard.
  3. Click Start , and then click Run .
  4. Type regedit , and then click OK .
  5. Click the Plus sign ( ) beside HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT to open the contents of that registry key.
  6. Complete the following steps to export the Installer registry key.
    1. Scroll down through the registry keys listed in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT until you find Installer .
    2. Right-click Installer and select Export .
    3. Select the Installer Keys Folder on the Windows Desktop as the location to export the file to in the Save In box.
    4. Type Installer1 into the File Name text box, and then click OK .
  7. Right-click the Installer key, and then select Delete . Click Yes .
  8. Scroll up and click the Minus sign ( ) beside HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT .
  9. Repeat steps 4, 5, and 6 to export, and then delete any of the registry keys located in the following table. When you export any of these registry keys, rename them according to the information in the table.

  10. Close the Registry Editor and restart the computer.

Step 2: Merge files into the registry

  1. Install the HP software. When the installation is complete, the registration screen opens.
  2. Double-click the Installer Keys folder on the Windows Desktop.
  3. Double-click the Installer1 file, and then click Yes . Repeat this step for all the Installer keys.
  4. Restart the computer, and then test the functionality of the newly installed HP software.

Solution four: Download the Microsoft tool
