Entering Safe Mode in Microsoft Windows 98, ME, and XP

Description

Running Windows in Safe Mode troubleshoots problems when starting or running in Normal Mode. Safe Mode allows settings to be changed or software to be removed. When starting in Safe Mode, Windows will run with a minimum set of drivers. This means, for example, that instead of loading the default graphics card driver, the computer will load a standard 16-colors VGA driver and "Safe Mode" will appear in all four corners of the screen.
Use one of the following methods to start Windows in Safe Mode:

Use one of the following methods to start the computer in Safe Mode.

Method 1: Windows 98/ME

Method 1 pertains to Windows 98 and Windows ME.
  1. Restart the computer.
  2. While the computer restarts, press and hold down the CTRL key until the Windows 98 or Windows ME Startup menu is displayed.
  3. Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode.
  4. Press the Enter key to start the computer.

Method 2: Windows XP/98/ME

Method 2 applies to Windows 98, ME and XP
  1. Start or reboot the computer.
  2. Repeatedly tap the F8 key until the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu displays.
  3. Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then press the Enter key.

Method 3: Windows XP/98/ME

Method 3 applies to Windows 98 and ME. When in Windows, follow the steps below:
  1. Click Start, the click Run. The Run window will open.
  2. In the Open box, type: msconfig
  3. Click OK. The System Configuration Utility window will open.
  4. Click the Advanced button. For Windows XP, click the BOOT.INI tab.

  5. Place a check next to Enable Startup Menu, and then click OK. For Windows XP, place a check next to /SAFEBOOT and click OK.

  6. Click Yes to restart the notebook. For Windows XP, click the Restart button.
  7. In the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu, select Option 3 and press the Enter key.
    NOTE:After using Option 3, uncheck the Enable Startup Menu box by repeating Steps 1-4, removing the check mark instead. For Windows XP, remove the check mark next to /SAFEBOOT.
