Using the ScanDisk Utility or Error Checking in Microsoft Windows XP

  • PrintPrint
In Microsoft Windows XP, the ScanDisk utility is called Error-checking. Use the following steps to scan a hard drive in Windows XP:
  1. Click Start > My Computer.
  2. Right-click the drive to scan and select Properties from the list.
  3. Click the Tools folder tab (see Figure 1: Hard disk tools).

  4. Click Check Now. A Check Disk screen appears with two options (see Figure 2: Checking disk options).
    Figure 2: Check disk options
  5. Select Automatically fix file system errors to avoid Windows prompting for permission to fix a file when it finds an incomplete or bad file.
  6. Select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors to perform a thorough scan of the hard drive's surface. Windows will isolate any bad sectors that it finds so that these bad areas on the hard drive will not get used again. This can take a very long time but is one of the most important things in preventing future problems with troublesome hard drives.
  7. Click Start to begin the process.
NOTE:If some system files are in use, Windows will prompt to restart and scan the drive once Windows reloads.
If the scan continually restarts, make sure that the hibernate feature is turned off inside Power Options:
  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Power Options.
  2. Under Settings for Portable/Laptop Power Scheme, locate the System hibernates row. Use the drop-down arrows to change the setting to Never.
  3. Click Apply, then OK.
