HP DVD Movie Writer Cannot Capture Video Immediately After Installation, No Detected Capture Device Present

  • PrintPrint

Introduction

This document covers the HP DVD Movie Writer capture driver not being properly installed. Normally, this happens when the HP DVD Movie Writer was attached to the computer before the software was installed. Typical symptoms of this problem are below:
  • The DVD recorder portion of the HP DVD Movie Writer is recognized by Windows (Figure 1, call-out 1).
The HP DVD Movie Writer uses standard Windows' drivers to communicate with the drive. Therefore, Windows will be able to address the drive successfully without any software installed. If recording software is installed, the drive can act as both a standard CD and DVD-ROM reader and will successfully be able to write to both recordable CD and DVD media.
  • The capture card portion of the HP DVD Movie Writer is not recognized by Windows (Figure 1, call-out 2)
If the HP DVD Movie Writer software and drivers were not installed before the HP DVD Movie Writer was attached to the computer, the capture portion of the drive may not have the appropriate drivers installed to allow the capture card to properly function. Windows will detect the HP DVD Movie Writer, but the HP Video Transfer Wizard and ShowBiz applications will not detect a video capture device is present. A reinstall of the software will not resolve the issue.

To check device manager for these listings, perform the following.
    • In Windows XP, click Start , then right-click My Computer and select Properties .
    • In Windows 2000, right-click My Computer on the desktop and select Properties .
  1. Click the Hardware tab.
  2. Click the Device Manager button.
  3. Check for the listings referred to in Figure 1. The next section will explain loading the drivers to correct the issue. If there are no yellow exclamation marks in device manager and the DVD Writer is recognized, the issue is not with the capture card driver, but may be another issue.

Loading the missing capture card drivers

If the capture card USB device driver has a yellow exclamation mark as shown in Figure 1, use the following steps to load the driver to recognize the capture card.
  1. Insert the HP DVD Movie Writer installation CD and cancel out of the installation program.
  2. If not already there, go to Device Manager (instructions to get to Windows Device Manager are in the previous section).
  3. From within Device Manager, double-click the USB Device with the yellow exclamation mark.
  4. Click the Reinstall Driver button.
  5. The hardware update wizard should start. Accept the default Install the software automatically option and select Next .
  6. Windows should automatically scan the install CD and load the appropriate drivers. If the automatic scan is not successful, specify the location and point to the \Drivers directory on the install disc.
  7. Once the hardware update wizard has loaded the drivers, click Finish to close the wizard.
  8. Verify the Device Manager capture card driver has been successfully loaded by checking within Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers for the HP DVD Movie Writer <model> listing (see figure 2).

ShowBiz and the HP Video Transfer wizard should now recognize the capture device.
