How to Share the Printer Over a Network Via HP JetDirect

Introduction

This document explains how to share the HP Deskjet 5150, 6520, 6540, and 6620 printers over a network via HP JetDirect.

Supported HP JetDirect external printer server

HP JetDirectImage
HP JetDirect 175X Fast Ethernet external print server.
JetDirect 380X external IEEE-802.11b (Wi-Fi) wireless print server
HP JetDirect en3700 external print server.

Peer-to-peer connection

In a peer-to-peer direct network configuration, the printer is directly connected to the network via an HP JetDirect external print server, and each PC on the network send print jobs directly to the HP JetDirect external print server.
Please follow the next steps to set up the printer:
  1. Connect the printer to the HP JetDirect external print server with a USB cable.

  2. Set up the HP JetDirect external print server.
  3. Install and configure the HP JetDirect external print server according to the instructions provided with the print server.
  4. Install the HP Deskjet series printer software on each client PC. Refer to the following section to find instructions for your operating system.

Installing the printer software on each of the clients

  • Windows 95, 98, and Me Client PCs:
    NOTE:Windows 95 operating system is only supported by the HP Deskjet 5150 printer.
    1. Install the HP JetDirect port software on each client according to the instructions included with the print server.
    2. Click Start, Settings, and Printers.
    3. Double-click Add printer and click Next.
    4. Choose Local Printer as the printer connection, and then click Next.
    5. Click the Have Disk button, and insert the HP Deskjet series printer software CD into your CD-ROM drive.
    6. In the Install From Disk dialog box, click Browse, then move to the HPFxxxxx.INF file in the folder for your language and the Windows 95, 98, and Me operating system.
      NOTE:xxxx stands for your HP Deskjet printer series. For example,for the HP Deskjet 5150 printer series, select the HPF5100x.INF file. For the English language and the Windows 95, 98 or Me operating systems, move to enu\driver\win9x_me\HPF5100x.INF.
    7. Click OK, and then click OK to close the Install From Disk dialog box. Click Next.
    8. Select the printer port from the Available ports list that was configured when the HP JetDirect external print server was set up. Click Next.
    9. Accept the default name for your printer (recommended) or enter a new name. To use this printer as your default printer, click Yes; otherwise, click No.
    10. Click Finish to complete the installation of the HP Deskjet printer software.
  • Windows 2000 Client PCs:
    1. Install the HP JetDirect port software on each client according to the instructions included with the print server.
    2. Click Start, Settings, and Printers.
    3. Double-click Add printer and click Next.
    4. Choose Local Printer as the printer connection, and then click Next.
    5. Select the printer port from the Use the following port list that was configured when the HP JetDirect external print server was set up. Click Next.
    6. Click the Have Disk button, and insert the HP Deskjet series printer software CD into your CD-ROM drive.
    7. Click Browse and move to the HPFxxxxx.INF file in the folder for your language and the Windows 2000 operating system.
      NOTE:xxxx stands for your HP Deskjet printer series. For example,for the HP Deskjet 5150 printer series, select the HPF5100x.INF file.For the English language and the Windows 2000 operating system, move to enu\driver\win_2K\HPF5100x.INF.
    8. Click Open, and then click OK to close the Install From Disk dialog box. Click Next.
    9. Accept the default name for your printer (recommended) or enter a new name. To use this printer as your default printer, click Yes; otherwise, click No.
    10. Click Next.
    11. Click Next.
    12. Type the location of your printer and any additional comments (optional), and then click Next.
    13. To print a test page, click Yes; otherwise, click No. Click Next.
    14. Click Finish to complete the installation.
  • Windows NT 4.0 Client PCs:
    1. Install the HP JetDirect port software on each client according to the instructions included with the print server.
    2. Click Start, Settings, and Printers.
    3. Double-click Add Printer, choose My Computer as the printer connection, and then click Next.
    4. Select the printer port from the Available ports list that was configured when the HP JetDirect external print server was set up. Click Next.
    5. Click the Have Disk button, and insert the HP Deskjet series printer software CD into your CD-ROM drive.
    6. In the Install from Disk dialog box, click Browse, then move to the HPFxxxxx.INF file in the folder for your language and the Windows NT 4.0 operating system.
      NOTE:xxxx stands for your HP Deskjet printer series. For example,for the HP Deskjet 5150 printer series, select the HPF5100x.INF file.For the English language and the Windows NT 4.0 operating system, move to enu\driver\win_nt\HPF5100N.INF.
    7. Click Open, and then click OK.
    8. Click Next.
    9. Accept the default name for your printer (recommended) or enter a new name, and then click Next.
    10. To print a test page, click Yes; otherwise, click No.
    11. Click Finish to complete the installation.
  • Windows XP Client PCs:
    1. Install the HP JetDirect port software on each client according to the instructions included with the print server.
    2. Click Start, Settings, and Printers.
    3. Double-click Add printer under the Printer Task menu. Click Next.
    4. Choose Local Printer as the printer connection, and then click Next.
    5. Select the printer port from the Use the following port list that was configured when the HP JetDirect external print server was set up. Click Next.
    6. Click the Have Disk button, and insert the HP Deskjet series printer software CD into your CD-ROM drive.
    7. Click Browse and move to HPFxxxxx.INF file in the folder for your language and the Windows XP operating system.
      NOTE:xxxx stands for your HP Deskjet printer series. For example,for the HP Deskjet 5150 printer series, select the HPF5100x.INF file.For the English language and the Windows XP operating system, move to enu\driver\win2K_XP\HPF5100N.INF.
    8. Click Open, and then click OK to close the Install From Disk dialog box. Click Next.
    9. Accept the default name for your printer (recommended) or enter a new name. To use the printer as your default printer, click Yes; otherwise, click No.
    10. Click Next.
    11. Click Next.
    12. Type the location of your printer and any additional comments (optional), and then click Next.
    13. To print a test page, click Yes; otherwise, click No. Click Next.
    14. Click Finish to complete the installation.
