'Access is denied' Error Message Displays While Installing the HP Software in Windows XP or Windows Vista

Issue

When you install the HP software on your Windows XP or Vista computer, the message Access is denied displays on the computer.
The error message might contain additional text, for example:
  • There was a problem installing this hardware
  • An error occurred during the installation of the device
  • Cannot Install this Hardware
IMPORTANT : Do not close the error message window. You must access the details of the error to troubleshoot correctly.
Click the plus sign () next to your operating system for more information.

In windows XP, the title of the error window (the top portion of the error window) contains additional text. This text varies according to the details of the error, but usually includes the path of the file that failed ("F:\setup\hpzprl01.exe").

The 'Access is denied ' error relates to the permissions that you and your user profile have on your computer. The HP installer tries to write HP data to various files or folders and registry keys on the computer during installation, and limited or incorrect permissions on those files, folders, or registry keys results in an 'Access is denied ' error.

Solution

Follow these steps to first determine where the HP installer failed, and then troubleshoot accordingly.

Step one: Open the error details

  1. Return to the 'Access is denied ' error window, and click OK . The error report details screen opens.
    NOTE:If you already closed the error window, restart the installation to reproduce the error.

  2. Click Details in the lower left corner of the error report details screen. An Error Situation Code (ESC) screen (error log) opens. Leave this screen open and continue to the next step.

Step two: Determine where the HP installer failed and select the appropriate troubleshooting steps

  1. Look at the Error Situation Code screen.
  2. Determine whether the error relates to a file or folder or a registry key, and then click the associated link for the appropriate troubleshooting.
