USB Devices Not Recognized After Upgrading to Windows XP Professional
After upgrading to Windows XP Professional, the notebook may not recognize some USB devices. This document provides information to resolve the issue.
If the device has a FailReasonString value in its hardware key, that string is displayed as the error message.
If there is no FailReasonString in the hardware key, the following generic error message is displayed:
This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10)
To correct this driver issue and recognize the USB device, ensure that the cable to the device is connected correctly to the computer, then perform one or more of the following methods.
Method 1: Update the device driver
- Click Start, and then right-click the My Computer icon. Select Properties, then the Hardware tab.
- Click the Device Manager button to launch Device Manager.
- The device which is not detected will be indicated with an exclamation mark (!).
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click the Update Driver button.
Method 2: Reinstall the device driver
- Follow Steps 1-3 in Method 1 to highlight the device in Device Manager.
- With the device selected, click the Uninstall button.
- Close the Device Manager and return to the Hardware tab of the System Properties dialog box. Click the Add Hardware Wizard button. Click Next to detect the hardware.
- Follow the onscreen prompts to install the correct drivers for the hardware.
