Fatal Error 'Error 2203' (MSI 2203) Displays During HP Software Installation in Windows

Issue

While installing the HP software, a Fatal error during installation or Error_Install_Failure message displays with the error code 2203 in the error message or in the log files.
Click the plus sign () next to your operating system for more information.
Important: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Re-register the MSIexec service

  1. On the Windows task bar, click Start (), and then click Run.
  2. In the Run window, type the following:
    msiexec /unregister
  3. Click OK. The Run window closes.
  4. Click Start (), and then click Run.
  5. In the Run window, type the following:
    msiexec /regserver
  6. Click OK. The Run window closes.
  7. Try the installation again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Give all users full permissions to the Program Files folder

NOTE:Make sure that you have Administrator rights to the computer.
  1. On the Windows task bar, click Start (), right-click My Computer, and then click Explore.
  2. If necessary, click the plus sign (+) next to C: (or your hard drive) to expand the list of options.
  3. Right-click Program Files, and then click Properties. The Program Files Properties window opens.
  4. In the Attributes section, click to clear the Read-only check box. If the box is already cleared, close the Properties dialog box, and then close the Explorer window.
  5. Click Apply, select Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files, and then click OK.
  6. Try the installation again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Re-register the ATL.DLL file

  1. On the Windows task bar, click Start (), and then click Run.
  2. In the Run window, type the following:
    regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\atl.dll
  3. Click OK. The Run window closes.
  4. Try the installation again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
