'Ox...' or 'C2...' Error Code Displays
This document is for HP Inkjet Printers.
If your printer or computer displays an alphanumeric
error code, and the message does not include the words “Ink system failure,” you have come to the correct troubleshooting document.
A code with letters and numbers
NOTE:There are many variations of these alphanumeric codes. Some begin with '0x...' while others begin with a 'B' or 'C.' Your exact error might not be in the example list, but you should still continue with the troubleshooting steps outlined in this document.
The following are examples of common alphanumeric error codes (where 'xxx' is any letter or number):
Step 1: Reset the printer
- Without turning off the printer, disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer.NOTE:The USB cable connects to the port on the rear of the printer. The port is labeled with the USB icon (). If your printer has a network or wireless connection, ignore this step.
- Remove the ink cartridges from the printer.
- Wait until a message to insert the ink cartridges displays. If you do not see a message within a few minutes, skip to step 4 to disconnect the power cord.NOTE:If your printer does not have a control panel, wait until the ink cartridge lights blink. If the ink cartridge lights do not blink within a few minutes, skip to step 4 to disconnect the power cord.
- Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord. If the printer does not automatically turn on, press the Power button.
- Reinsert the ink cartridges, and then close any open doors on the printer.
- If you receive a prompt to print a calibration page, do so.
- If you disconnected the USB cable, reconnect it to the rear of the printer.
- Try to print.
If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If your printer is from the HP Officejet Pro 8500A e-All-in-One printer series, your printer might need a firmware update. Determine if a firmware update is necessary, and then download any new firmware.
NOTE:If the printer is connected to a network with Internet access, the printer’s firmware can be updated through the control panel and in most cases automatically updates as necessary without any user input. In order for this to occur, Web Services must be enabled. For users connected to a network with Internet access, you can search for printer updates from the printer control panel.
Print a Printer Status Report from the control panel, and then check for updated firmware.
- Load plain white paper in the input tray.
- Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
- On the printer control panel, touch the right arrow () to display the second navigation screen.
- Touch Setup ().The Setup Menu displays.
- Touch the down arrow (), and then touch Reports.
- Touch Printer Status Report.The Printer Status Report prints.
- Identify the current firmware version on the Printer Status Report.
- Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads to see if there is a newer firmware version for your printer.
- Use one of the available methods to identify your printer model.The software and driver results page displays when the printer model is identified.
- Check to see if your operating system is correctly identified. If your operating system is not correct, click Edit, select your operating system and version from the drop-down menus, and then click Update.
- Click Firmware.
- Compare the version available on the web to what is on the Printer Status Report.
- If the version matches what is on your printer status report, there is no need to install firmware. Continue to the next step.
- If the firmware version does not match what is on your printer status report, install the newer firmware by following the instructions on the firmware download page.
If the steps to download updated firmware resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
Step 2: Service the printer
If the previous steps did not resolve the issue, service the printer.

If you completed all the preceding steps and your product still has an issue, service the product.
