'Carriage Jam' Error Message Displays on the Control Panel

Issue

A 'Carriage Jam ' error message displays on the control panel. The print carriage, which holds the print cartridges, stalls against the left side of the product. A paper jam might have occurred previously.
You might also be experiencing one of the following symptoms:
  • The product will not print.
  • Printing stops unexpectedly.
NOTE:These symptoms might be caused by other issues. The steps provided in this document will not resolve every issue that might cause these symptoms.

Solution

Follow these steps until the issue is resolved. Completing all of the steps might not be necessary to resolve the issue.

Step one: Turn the All-in-One off and on again

  1. Press the On button ( ) to turn the product off.
  2. Press the On button ( ) to turn the product on.
    NOTE:It can take a few seconds for the product to turn on after pressing the On button.

Step two: Clear any paper jam

  1. Remove the rear clean-out door. Press the tab to the right, and then pull out the door.

    CAUTION:Clearing a paper jam from the top or front of the product can damage the print mechanism. Whenever possible, access and clear paper jams through the rear clean-out door.
  2. Gently pull out any jammed paper from the rollers.
    CAUTION:If the paper tears when you are removing it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If you do not remove all the pieces of paper from the product, more paper jams are might occur.
  3. Replace the rear clean-out door, and then gently push it forward until it snaps into place.
  4. On the control panel, press OK to restart any remaining print jobs, or try printing your original document again.

Step three: Make sure that the print carriage can move freely

  1. With the power to the product still on, unplug the power cord from the back of the product.
  2. Open the print-carriage access door by lifting it until it stops.

  3. Gently move the print carriage to the left of the product.
  4. Close the print-carriage access door.
  5. Plug the power cord into the back of the product, and then turn the product on if it does not turn on automatically.
  6. Follow these steps to print a self-test page:
    1. Press the Setup button ( ).
    2. Press the down arrow button ( ).
    3. Press the right arrow button ( ).
    4. Press OK .
      • If the issue is resolved , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
      • If the issue is not resolved , continue to the next step.

Step four: Remove the print cartridges

  1. Press the On button ( ) to turn the product on.
  2. Open the print-carriage access door by lifting it until it stops, and then wait until the print carriage moves to the right side of the product and is idle and silent.
  3. In the left slot press down on the tri-color print cartridge to release it, slide it out of the print carriage, and then place the print cartridge on a clean sheet of paper. Repeat this step for the black or photo print cartridge in the right slot.
    CAUTION:Do not touch the ink nozzles or copper-colored contacts. Touching these parts will result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Do not remove the copper strips; they are required electrical contacts.

Step five: Reinstall the print cartridges

  1. Hold the tri-color print cartridge with the HP label facing up, and then insert it at a slight upward angle into the left slot. Make sure the print cartridge snaps firmly into place.

  2. Hold the black or photo print cartridge with the HP label facing up, and then insert it at a slight upward angle into the right slot. Make sure the print cartridge snaps firmly into place.

  3. Close the print-cartridge access door.

Step six: Make sure that the control-panel faceplate is correctly installed

When the control-panel faceplate is incorrectly installed, the product might indicate a false carriage-stall error condition. Review the following information before proceeding.
  • If the control-panel faceplate is already installed, and the product has been working for some time, do not attempt to reinstall the control-panel faceplate. Instead, press firmly on the control-panel faceplate to make sure it is secure.
  • If the product has not been set up yet, and the control-panel faceplate is not installed, follow these steps.
  1. Position the control-panel faceplate above the control-panel buttons.

  2. Press down firmly on all edges of the control-panel faceplate to secure it.

  3. Make sure the control-panel buttons are not trapped under the control-panel faceplate.

Step seven: Plug the All-in-One directly into a wall outlet

  1. Unplug the power cord from any power strips or surge protectors.
  2. Plug the power cord into a grounded or earthed wall outlet.

Step eight: Perform a partial reset

  1. If the product is turned off, press the On button ( ) to turn it on.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the product.
  3. Press and hold OK and the Cancel button ( ) while plugging the power cord into the product.
  4. Continue pressing and holding the buttons until the product turns off.
  5. Press the On button ( ). OOB NVM Reset displays on the control panel.

Step nine: Print a self-test page

  1. Press the Setup button ( ).
  2. Press the down arrow button ( ).
  3. Press the right arrow button ( ).
  4. Press OK .
  5. If the error message still displays on the control panel, go to the next step.

Step ten: Service the All-in-One

These steps apply to all countries/regions except Asia Pacific.
If you have completed all the preceding steps and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.
