This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs being upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista.
Prior to the release of Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system (OS), HP built a series of Windows XP PCs, designated as HP-Certified Windows Vista Capable. These PCs have been tested by HP, are certified to work with Windows Vista, and HP provides the appropriate qualified Vista drivers.
Disclaimer on the Upgrade of Non-Vista Capable PCs - HP does not support the upgrade of HP PCs that are not included in the list of HP-Certified Windows Vista Capable Notebook PCs . HP does not provide Vista specific drivers and does not provide technical support for non HP-Certified Windows Vista Capable notebook PCs that are upgraded to Windows Vista. HP cannot support PCs that are upgraded using an unapproved process.
Windows XP to Vista upgrade options
Depending on the model of your HP notebook PC, you have the following upgrade options:
- HP-Certified Windows Vista Capable PCs may continue to use Windows XP, or may be upgraded to Windows Vista.
- HP PCs designed for XP only should not be upgraded to Windows Vista.
- HP PCs purchased with Windows Vista should not be downgraded to another operating system.
Upgrade with the Express Upgrade Kit for Vista Capable PCs - In most countries, this option is limited to HP-Certified Vista Capable notebook PCs purchased between October 26, 2006 and March 15, 2007. Customers who qualified for this program, had the option to order the HP Upgrade Utility for Windows Vista disc with the Microsoft Vista OS disc from HP. The Eligibility period for ordering the Express Upgrade Kit for Vista has now ended. All Proof of Purchase details must have been submitted to the Fulfillment Center by May 31, 2007 for the order to be valid.

Upgrade with the HP Upgrade Utility and a retail version of Windows Vista - This option is limited to HP-Certified Vista Capable notebook PCs purchased before October 26, 2006. You may purchase your own retail copy of the Windows Vista Operating System, but you must also download the HP Upgrade Utility for Windows Vista (English only) from the HP web site. If you do not use the HP Upgrade Utility for Windows Vista, your notebook PC may not operate properly.
