Share Your Printer on a Network with Apple AirPort

Introduction

You can share your HP printer on an existing network by connecting it to an Apple AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station with a USB cable. This connection type allows you to print from more than one computer on the network. It is not necessary for your printer to have built-in network capability.
The steps in this document assume that you have already set up your AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station on your network. If you have not set up your AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station on your wired (Ethernet) or wireless network, click here to visit the Apple support page (in English).
To use an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station with a computer running Windows, you need the following:
  • A wired (Ethernet) or wireless network
  • AirPort Utility v5.5.3 or later
  • USB cable (if your printer does not have built-in network capability)

Follow these steps to add the printer on each computer that shares the printer.
  1. Connect the USB cable to the printer and to the USB port of the AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station.
  2. Click the Apple menu (), and then click System Preferences.
  3. Click Print & Fax or Print & Scan.
  4. Click the plus sign (+), and then select the name of your HP printer.
  5. Click Add.

Following are frequently asked questions regarding Apple AirPort.
Follow these steps to uninstall your printer software, and then reinstall the full feature software.
NOTE:Some of the following steps require you to restart the computer. Consider bookmarking this page on your Web browser, so that you can reference it after restarting the computer.

Step one: Uninstall the printer software

  1. Navigate to your printer's HP folder. This step varies by operating system.
  2. Open the Uninstall or HP Uninstaller folder.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the printer software, and then restart the computer when the uninstaller prompts.

Step two: Download and install the printer software

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. Type your printer model number.
    2. Click Go.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.
    A list of drivers and other downloads display.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature or solution software and driver listed, and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
Your printer might not recognize the channel your router is on. Sign in to your AirPort router, and then change the channel to a number between 1 and 11. If you need help changing the channel, click here to visit the Apple support page (in English).
You might need to update the router firmware. To find any firmware updates for your router, click here to visit the Apple support page (in English).
A USB connection to a router does not support scanning. Set up the printer on your wireless or wired (Ethernet) network to scan again. If you have not yet set up your printer to work over a network connection, visit HP Customer Care , type your printer number in the search field, and then browse to the appropriate support document to help you install your printer on a wireless network.
