Introduction
The driver for your HP product is already included
in the Windows Vista operating system. You do not need to download a driver to use the product. Keep reading to learn how to install the in-Operating System driver (in-OS driver) included in Windows Vista with your HP printer.
With the in-OS driver, some of the buttons on the printer do not function and some of the advanced product features are not available. But you can still print, scan, fax, and import and view images on a memory card. See our Frequently asked questions

Install the Windows Vista in-Operating System (in-OS) print driver

The method that you use to install the basic Vista driver depends on whether you use a USB cable or a parallel cable to connect the product to the computer. Use the method for your type of cable

When you connect the product to the computer, Windows Vista detects the hardware and automatically installs the correct driver. A notification lets you know when installation begins and when it is complete. You do not
have to download a driver or insert the product CD.
Step one: Install the in-OS driver
- Turn the product on.
- Connect the Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable to the product and to the computer.

Step two: Print a document
Print from any software program to make sure your printer is working correctly.
- Open a document in the software application in which it was created.
- Click File , and then click Print .
- If your document printed, your printer is working correctly. See our Frequently asked questions to learn how to scan or fax.

If Windows Vista did not automatically install a driver, try these troubleshooting steps.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the printer.
- Turn the printer off and then back on. Clear any blinking lights or error messages.
- Click the Windows icon (
) click Control Panel
, and then click Printers
. - Right-click the printer icon (
) representing your HP product, and then click Delete
. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. (If the product is not listed, skip to step 6.) - If multiple icons exist for the product, remove them all.
- Restart your computer. You might want to bookmark this page so that you can quickly return to it.
- Reconnect the USB cable to the printer.
- Windows Vista will automatically install the correct driver.
NOTE:If the Found New Hardware window displays, choose Locate and install driver software (recommended) , and then follow the on-screen instructions.
Follow these installation steps if you connect your printer to the computer with a parallel cable.

NOTE:In order to use a parallel cable, you must have a parallel port on the computer and on the printer.
Step one: Install the in-OS driver
- Turn off the computer.
- Connect the parallel cable to the computer and the printer.
- Restart the computer, and then turn the printer on. Windows detects the printer and opens the Found New Hardware window.
- Select Locate and Install Driver .
NOTE:If the User Account Control window opens, click Allow to continue.Windows checks whether a driver is available.If a driver is available, follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.If Windows does not locate a driver, click Cancel , and then proceed to the following steps. - On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (
), and then click Control Panel
. - Click Printers .
- On the top of the Printers window, click Add a printer . The Add Printer wizard opens.
NOTE:If the User Account Control window opens, click Allow to continue. - Click Add a local printer , and then click Next . The Choose a printer port window opens.
- Select Use an existing port , leave the default port of LPT1: (Printer Port) , and then click Next . The Install the printer driver window opens.
- Click HP in the list of manufacturers.
- Click your HP product in the list of printers, and then click Next . The Name your printer window opens.
NOTE:If your printer is not listed, click HP Deskjet 500c . This alternate driver might provide basic functionality. - Type a name for the product in the Printer name box, or accept the default printer name, and then click Next . The printer driver installs.
- After the installation completes, click Print a test page .
- Click Finish when the test page prints, or click Troubleshoot if the test page does not print correctly.

Although you cannot fax a document directly from your computer, you can still fax a printed document from the product.
- Print the document to be faxed.
- Place the printout on the flat surface or feeder slot in the same way you would for scanning or copying a document.
- Fax the paper version of the document by using the faxing buttons on the control panel of the All-in-One.
Follow these steps to access images on a memory card.
- Insert the memory card into the appropriate memory card slot on the product.
NOTE:If the memory card is already inserted, remove it, and then reinsert it. - On the Autoplay window that opens, click Import Pictures , View Pictures , or Open folder to view files .
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
