NOTE:This video shows the HP Deskjet F4180 printer. The outside of the printer might not look the same as your printer, but the steps are the same.

Step one: Remove the cartridges

  1. Make sure that the product is turned on. Press the On button to turn it on. The On button is lit when the product is on.
    CAUTION:If the product is off when the cartridge door is opened to access the cartridges, the product does not release the cartridges for changing. The product might be damaged if the cartridges are not docked safely in the center when they are removed.
  2. Open the cartridge door. The carriage moves to the center of the product.

  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, and then lightly press down on a cartridge to release it.
    Remove the cartridge from the slot on the left to replace the tri-color cartridge.
    Remove the cartridge from the slot on the right to replace the black cartridge.

  4. Pull the cartridge towards you out of its slot.
    • If the black cartridge is being removed in order to install the photo cartridge, store the black cartridge in the cartridge protector or an airtight plastic container.
    • If the cartridge is being removed because it is low or out of ink, recycle the cartridge. The HP Inkjet Supplies Recycling Program is available in many countries/regions and allows you to recycle the used cartridges, free of charge.

Step two: Install the new cartridge

  1. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging and, being careful to touch only the black plastic, gently remove the plastic tape by using the pink pull tab.

    CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Do not remove the copper strips. They are required electrical contacts.

  2. Insert the new cartridge forward into the empty slot.
    To install a tri-color cartridge, insert it into the left slot.
    To install a black cartridge, insert it into the right slot.

  3. Press the cartridge firmly into its slot until it clicks.

    CAUTION:When installing the cartridge, do not rest your hand on top of the product for leverage. This might cause the carriage to lift out of position.

  4. Close the cartridge access door.

  5. If a new cartridge has been installed, the cartridge alignment process starts.
  6. Make sure that there is plain, unused, white, U.S. letter or A4 size paper loaded in the input tray, and then press OK .
  7. The product aligns the cartridges. Recycle or discard the cartridge alignment sheet.
  8. Press OK .
