Support details

When active programs are interrupted because of a power loss or incorrect user action, the operating system can become corrupted and cause the PC to quit working. Interrupting one of the setup programs when the computer is turned on for the first time can cause a failure. On the initial start-up, several programs are run automatically to demonstrate the advantages of the new PC and to configure hardware and software. Interrupting these startup programs can cause the PC to fail. Actions that occur during the initial startup and that take an hour or more to complete include:
  • Configuring a Recovery Partition on the hard drive.
  • Creating a set of Recovery discs.
  • Backing up and restoring files.
HP recommends that you do not force the closure of any application or program, especially programs that run automatically when you turn on your notebook for the first time. If the operating system is corrupted, it is necessary to restore the OS and programs to their original condition using the HP Recovery Manager. The HP Recovery Manager can be launched from within Windows or by using the f11 from the BIOS, or by using the recovery discs.

If the PC cannot access the Windows desktop, and the Recovery Manager cannot be started by pressing the f11 key on start-up, use the recovery discs to restore the hard drive to its original operating condition. You can use either the personalized recovery disc that you created using the Recovery Manager, or you can order a replacement recovery disc from HP.
NOTE: Performing the recovery process using the personalized recovery disc that you created may take less than an hour, while using replacement discs ordered directly from HP may take four to six hours and includes several restarts.
