Setting Up the Product (Hardware)

Introduction

This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the product. Complete these steps before you install the product software on your computer. If you already set up the product hardware, and need software installation help, see Links to Software Installation Instructions at the end of this document.

Setting up the product

Follow these steps in order. When you are finished, you can click the appropriate link at the end of this document if you need instructions to install the product software.
CAUTION:Do NOT connect the USB cable now. If you need a USB cable to connect the product to the computer, you will be prompted to connect it at the correct time during software installation.

Step One: Unpack the product

  1. Remove all tape and protective film from the lid and from the front and back of the product
  2. Pull the paper tray down.

Step two: Unfold the paper trays

The paper tray holds paper and other print media. Unfold the paper tray before printing.
  1. Raise the product cover and lower the paper tray.

  2. Fold out the tray extension.

  3. Close the product cover.

Step three: Connect the supplied power cord and adapter

  1. Plug the power supply into the back of the product.
  2. Plug the power cord into the power supply.
  3. Plug the remaining end of the power cord into a grounded wall outlet.

Step four: Turn on power

Press the Power button ( ) to turn the product on.

Step five: Load plain paper

Insert the paper into the paper tray and then slide the paper width guide snugly against the paper.

Step six: Install the cartridges

  1. Remove the cartridge from its packaging and carefully remove the pink plastic tape. Hold the cartridge so that the copper strips are on the bottom and facing toward the product.

    CAUTION:Do not touch the cartridge ink nozzles or copper contacts. Contact with these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Do not remove the copper strips. The strips are required electrical contacts.

  2. Open the product cover, and then wait for the carriage to move to the middle of the product.
  3. When the carriage is idle and silent, hold the tri-color cartridge in front of the left slot, with the copper contacts facing down and toward the product.
  4. Hold the front of the cartridge so that it is pointed up slightly, and then insert the cartridge into the slot.

  5. Press firmly until the cartridge clicks into place.
  6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 to install the black cartridge.
    NOTE:The black cartridge might not be included with the product. It is not required to operate the product.
  7. Close the cover.

After you complete the previous setup steps, you can install the product software with the product CD or by downloading the software from the HP Web site. For instructions, click the link for your computer operating system and type of connection.
CAUTION:Do NOT connect a USB cable now. You will be prompted to connect it at the correct time during software installation.
