Before you begin
- Turn off the computer, disconnect all cables, and transfer the computer to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a non-carpeted floor.
- HP strongly recommends the use of an anti-static wrist strap and a conductive foam pad when working on the computer.
WARNING:The edges of metal panels can cut skin. Be careful not to slide skin along any interior metal edge of the computer.
CAUTION:This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.

Removing a CD or DVD drive
Use the steps in this section to remove a CD or DVD drive so that an empty bay can be used to install a new drive.
WARNING:Make sure the computer is disconnected from power before starting.
|Step 1. To remove either the upper or lower CD or DVD drive, first remove the right side panel.|

|Step 3. Pull out the drive latch and swing it partially to the right.|
| Step 4. Push the drive forward slightly, and detach the power and data cables from the back of the drive.|
Note where each cable goes.
|Some CD/DVD drives have SATA power and data cables. To remove these cables, first press on the latch.|
|Step 5. Pull out the drive completely through the front of the computer.|
Installing a CD or DVD drive
Use the steps in this section to install a new CD or DVD drive into an empty drive bay.
|If installing a new CD or DVD drive in a previously unused drive bay, first remove the breakaway metal plate from the front of the computer.|
|Step 1. Remove the screws from the metal shield.|
Step 2. Pry off the shield with pliers or a flat-headed screwdriver.
NOTE:If it helps, remove the adjacent CD or DVD drive before removing the shield.
|Step 3. Make sure the new drive you are installing is set to CS (cable select).|
|Step 4. Push the CD/DVD drive partway into either empty drive bay.|
|Step 5. Attach the power and flat ribbon (data) cables to the rear of the drive.|
|If the drive uses a flat ribbon cable (PATA) and only one drive is installed, attach it to the flat ribbon connector labeled Master . If two PATA drives exist, the second should attach to the middle connector on the flat ribbon cable labeled Slave .|
|Step 6. Pull out the drive latch and insert its peg into the hole marked 1 .|
|Step 7. Slide the drive back until it locks into place.|
|Step 8. Replace the front panel, and then the side panel.|

|Reconnect the cables, and turn on the computer. |
If using Windows, wait until Windows fully opens, finds, and configures the new drive. It may automatically install a driver for the new drive.
