How To Configure the Fax Console and Send a Fax in Windows XP

Introduction

This document provides basic information on installing the Windows fax printer driver, configuring the fax console, and sending a fax using the Windows fax driver with the HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario notebook PCs.
Before configuring the fax console or attempting to send a fax, make sure the PC is connected to a working telephone system with the proper phone cable.

Install the Windows fax driver

If the fax option has not been installed yet, follow the steps below:
  1. Click Start , Control Panel , Printers and Other Hardware and click Printers and Faxes .
  2. Click Install a local fax printer or Set up faxing on the left area.

Configure the default fax options

After installing the local fax printer, follow the steps below to configure the fax options:
  1. Click Start , Control Panel , Printers and Other Hardware and click Printers and Faxes .
  2. Double-click on the fax icon .
    NOTE:If you have not already setup an Internet connection, a dialogue box opens to request country, area code, and dialing type information.
  3. When the Fax Configuration Wizard appears, click Next , and fill in the required Sender Information , then click Next to continue.
  4. In the Select Device for Sending or Receiving Faxes window, select the modem to be used in the Please select the fax device list.
    The Enable Send option is selected by default.
    To receive faxes on the PC, select the Enable Receive option and the way that the faxes will be received, that is, manually or automatically.
    Click Next .
  5. In the Transmitting Subscriber Identification (TSID) window, type some unique text to identify you, or your company, as the source of the fax. The TSID information appears in the header area of the received faxes.
    Click Next and Finish .
  6. In the Called Subscriber Identification (CSID) window, type some unique text to identify you, or your company, as the receiver of the fax sent to your PC.
    Click Next .
  7. In the Routing Options window, specify if the file should be printed, or stored, or both when the fax is received.
    Click Next and Finish to complete the Fax Configuration Wizard.
To change any of the fax configuration settings, double-click the fax icon to open the Fax Console, and select Tools and Configure Fax...

Send a fax using the Fax Console

To send a short, plain text fax, perform the following steps:
  1. Open the Fax Console by clicking on Start , All Programs , Accessories , Communications , Fax , and then click Fax Console .
  2. Click on File and Send a Fax... .
    When the Send Fax Wizard appears click Next .
  3. In the Recipient Information window, type the name of the recipient and its fax number and click on Next .
  4. In the Preparing the Cover Page window, type a short description of the fax subject in the Subject line box if desired, and the text of the fax in the Note box.
    Click on Next .
  5. In the Schedule dialog box, select the time and the priority for the fax to be sent.
  6. If you are satisfied with the information, click Next and Finish .

Send a fax using the printer function

To send a file, such as a word document or spreadsheet, and a plain text cover sheet as a fax, perform the following steps:
  1. Open the file that it is going to be faxed, for example, a Word document file.
  2. Click File , Print , and select the fax device.
  3. Click OK to open the Send Fax Wizard . Click Next and follow the prompts.
  4. In the Recipient Information window, type the name and fax number for the recipient and click Next .
  5. In the Preparing the Cover Page window, unselect the Select a cover page template with the following information option if sending a cover page is not desired.
    If a cover page is desired fill in the Subject line and/or Note fields, and click Next .
  6. In the Schedule dialog box, select the time and the priority for the fax to be sent.
  7. If you are satisfied with the information, click Next and Finish .
