How to Export and Import Microsoft Outlook Express Mail and Address Book

This documents contains information on how to export and import Microsoft Outlook Express mail and address book.
The need of this process might be the following: HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario system recovery does not keep the Outlook Express mail and address book, so before performing a system recovery it will be necessary to create a back up by exporting them. Once the system recovery process is finished and Outlook Express is configured it will be necessary to import them back.
To perform these operations follow the instructions below:

Backing up the mail

  1. Create a new folder on the desktop named, for example, Exported Mail :
    1. Right-click on any empty area of the desktop.
    2. Click New and Folder .
    3. Name the folder as Exported Mail .
  2. Start Outlook Express. Resize the Outlook Express window so that part of the desktop is visible.
  3. Move the Exported Mail folder icon created in Step 1 to the visible desktop area.
  4. In the Outlook Express window, click the folder that contains the messages to be exported.
  5. Select the messages that are going to be exported (1). To select more than one message at the same time hold down the SHIFT key of the keyboard.
    Drag the selected messages from the Outlook Express window (2), and drop them in the Exported Mail folder created in Step 1 (3).
  6. Save the Exported Mail folder by using the floppy disk, CD writer, or DVD writer drives.

Restoring the mail

Once Outlook Express has been restored and configured, import the saved mail by following the steps below:
  1. Insert the media containing the Exported Mail folder saved in the Backing up the mail section.
  2. Start Outlook Express.
  3. Open the Exported Mail folder.
    NOTE:Note that the Exported Mail was saved in a floppy, CD/RW or DVD+R/RW media.
  4. Resize the Exported Mail window and the Outlook Express window so that both windows are visible at the same time.
  5. Select the messages that are going to be exported. To select more than one message at the same time hold down the SHIFT key of the keyboard (1).
    Drag the selected messages from the Exported Mail folder (2), and drop them in the desired Outlook Express folder (3).

Backing up the Address Book

Use one of these two solutions:
  1. Solution 1 :
    1. Start Outlook Express.
    2. Click on Tools , and Address Book .
    3. Click on the File menu, point to Export , and then click Address Book (WAB) .
    4. Select the address book to be exported, click Export , and then proceed through the wizard.
    5. Save the address book by using the floppy disk, CD writer, or DVD writer drives.
  2. Solution 2 :
    1. Exit all open applications.
    2. In Windows 98 or Me, double-click on My Computer , C:/ , Windows , Application Data , then Microsoft .
      NOTE:If any file is displayed after double-clicking Windows , click Show Files .
      In Windows XP, double-click on My Computer , C:/ , Documents and Settings , Administrator , Application Data , then Microsoft .
    3. Right-click Address Book .
    4. Select Send To and 3 ½ Floppy (A:) .
The address book back-up is now complete.

Restoring Address Book files

Import the saved address book by following one of the solutions below.
NOTE:Chose the appropriate solution depending on the Solution used to backup the address book. For example, if the address book was saved by following the Solution 1 of the Backing up the Address Book section, follow the steps described in the Solution 1 of this section.
  1. Solution 1
    1. Insert the media containing the address book file saved.
    2. Start Outlook Express.
    3. Click on Tools , and Address Book .
    4. Click on the File menu, point to Import , and then click Address Book (WAB) .
    5. Locate the address book to be imported in the appropriate drive (floppy, CDR/RW or DVD+R/RW), click on the file and select Import .
      Depending on the type of address book to be imported, either locate and click the address book file, and then click Open , or proceed through the wizard.
  2. Solution 2
    1. Insert the media containing the address book file saved.
    2. Double-click on My Computer , and the appropriate drive (floppy, CDR/RW or DVD+R/RW) unit.
    3. Right-click the Address Book file, and select Copy . Close all open windows.
    4. In Windows 98 or Me, double-click on My Computer , C:/ , Windows , Application Data , then Microsoft .
      NOTE:If any file is displayed after double-clicking Windows , click Show Files .
      In Windows XP, double-click on My Computer , C:/ , Documents and Settings , Administrator , Application Data , then Microsoft .
    5. Right-click the Address Book folder and select Paste to copy the data to the hard disk.
    6. When prompted to overwrite existing files, click Yes .
The address book is now restored.
