Information
Unable to install Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) on a Host PC running Windows Vista N editions.
User may encounter the following error when trying to install the WMDC on a Host PC running an N edition of Windows Vista (Windows Vista Home N edition, Windows Vista Business N edition) :
The update could not be installed because at least one Windows component required by Windows Mobile Device Center is missing.
This error message is displayed when the WMDC installation (setup file) is started.
Details
Scope : The issue occurs only on PCs running N editions of the Windows Vista Operating System. The N editions of Windows Vista are available for the Europe region only. They are the same as the generic Home/Business edition of Vista, without the media capabilities. Model: All iPAQs that the user is trying to synchronize with a Host PC running an N edition of Windows Vista.
Cause : The Windows Vista Home/Business N editions do not have the media capabilities or Windows Media Player. Windows Media Player is required by Windows Mobile Device Center to function.
Solution/Information : Currently, there is no workaround as Windows Media Player is not available as a separate download for Windows Vista. Inform the customer of the cause of the issue and suggest using another PC using a non-N edition of Windows Vista or Windows XP as a workaround.
