System Recovery for Business Notebooks (F11)
This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with the HP Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) beginning in late-2008.
To access the HP System Recovery, turn on the computer and immediately press the esc key to display the Startup Menu, and then press the F11 key.
You can use HP Backup and Recovery Manager to restore the entire hard disk image to the original factory-shipped state. The Recovery Manager will erase all personal files and information, and then install all the original software programs and hardware drivers. There are two ways to start System Recovery.
- If the computer will not boot into Windows, turn on the computer and immediately press the esc key to display the Startup Menu, and then press the F11 key.NOTE:If you have an HP image on your computer, you can press f11 to display the HP Backup and Recovery Manager, even if the prompt does not appear during startup.
- If the computer will boot into Windows, click Start, type recovery into the search field, and then select HP Recovery Manager from the list.NOTE:There are multiple recovery programs, based on the model. You should attempt every other system repair option available before performing a complete system recovery, and make backups of your data. Save files to external storage media, such as optical discs, and take notes about your email configuration. Once the process has begun, it cannot be stopped or reversed.
When using the HP System Recovery, it will attempt to restore your hard disk from the recovery partition. If a message appears, indicating that the recovery partition is missing or corrupted, you will need to use a set of HP Recovery Discs to restore your hard disk to its original factory image. If you did not previously create a set of HP Recovery Discs, you will have to contact HP to order a new set of Recovery Discs for your computer.
Connect to AC power during the Recovery process, and do not turn the computer off until you see the Windows Vista Startup screen. If the recovery process is stopped once it has begun, the next time the computer boots, it will restart the Recovery from the beginning, and will require HP Recovery Discs to complete the process this time.
After performing a System Recovery, use HP Health Check immediately to update your system's hardware drivers. Then use Windows Update to check for security patches and other software updates, and also reinstall and update your antivirus software.
The HP Recovery process is extremely straightforward. After pressing the F11 key to enter the System Recovery window, a Windows load bar will appear for several moments. Then a wizard screen appears. Follow the on-screen directions and warnings, and then click Next.
You will be prompted twice to verify that you have backed up all data. Then, in order to continue, you must click the checkbox beside the warning By checking this box, you certify that you understand all of the warnings displayed up to this point and you wish to continue. Once you have checked this box, and clicked the Next button, the recovery process will begin.
