"Network not Found" or "PXE Error" Error Message Appears During Startup

  • PrintPrint
This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with the HP Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) beginning in late-2008.
On startup, you may see an error message like the following:
Network Not Found
Please check your network connection and try again by pressing the power button.
In business environments, computers may be set up to boot from a specific location on the corporate network for specific technical tasks, such as downloading operating system elements from a server. As such, it is an option usually used only for IT maintenance. But if the temporary network boot option was not reset after IT maintenance, you may get this error when you try to boot the computer.
Also, if a computer that is configured for a network boot is used on a network that does not support network booting, or if the normal network server is not available, an error message referencing PXE is displayed.
As a temporary work-around, you can use the Boot Device Options (F9) to select a different bootable device, such as: the internal hard drive, a disk drive, or even an external disk drive. To access the Boot Device Options, turn on the computer and immediately press the esc key to display the Startup Menu, and then press the F9 key.
If the computer is connected to a corporate network, contact the network administrator or the IT department to resolve the errors.
If the computer is connected to a personal network, follow the steps below to reset the BIOS Setup boot options.
  1. Turn on the computer and immediately press the esc key to display the Startup Menu, and then press the F10 key to access the BIOS Setup.
  2. Change the boot order so that the internal hard drive is the first option. You can also choose to disable network boot entirely.
  3. Save the changes and restart the computer.
