  • PrintPrint

Issue

When you install the HP software, the following fatal error message displays on the computer: 'Error 1312. Cannot create the directory <Folder Name>. A file with this name already exists. Please rename or remove the file and click Retry, or click Cancel to exit.'

Solution

First, choose your operating system.
NOTE:Do not close the error message. Later in these instructions, you will need to reference the file name that is given in the error message.
Follow these steps in the order presented to resolve the issue on a Windows XP operating system.

Step one: Determine if you have administrator privileges on the computer

You must have administrator privileges on your computer so that you do not attempt to install the software on a restricted users account. If you do not have the correct privileges on your computer, the new software files will not replace the old software files and 1312 Fatal Error recurs.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type lusrmgr.msc, and then press Enter. The Local Users and Groups window opens.
  3. Click Groups on the left pane.
  4. Double-click Administrators on the right pane.
  • If you do have Administrator privileges, continue to the next step in this document.
  • If you do not have Administrator privileges, contact your system administrator.

Step two: Cancel the installation

  1. Note the file name that is given in the error message.
  2. Click Exit on the HP Installer.

Step three: Find the file that cannot be created and delete the file

  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, and then click Search.
  2. In the Search Companion dialog box, click All files and Folders.
  3. In the All or part of the file name box, type the name of the file that is given in the error message.
  4. Click More advanced options.
  5. Check Search subfolders, and click Search.
  6. Right-click the file, and then click Delete.
  7. Click Yes at the next prompt.

Step four: Reinstall the software

Follow these steps to reinstall the HP software. When you reinstall the software, you replace everything needed to run the program. This process deletes corrupt or missing files that result in the 1312 Fatal Error.
You can use the software CD that shipped with your product to install the software, but HP recommends using the HP Web site to download and install the most current software available for your product.
CAUTION:If you get any third-party firewall messages during installation (for example, a message from McAfee), click continue, unblock, yes, allow, or permit. Otherwise the software installation fails.
  1. If you already downloaded the software from the HP Web site, browse to the place where you saved the downloaded file (for example, your computer desktop), and then double-click the file.
If you have not yet downloaded the software from the HP Web site, click here to download the latest software .
