What is the System Information tool?

The System Information tool is a utility that displays information that is specific to your computer. It displays the Product Name and Product Number which you will need to download drivers or software. It lists some of the hardware specifications for the computer, such as processor type and processor speed and amount of RAM. If you want more detailed specifications, see the Where can I find a product specifications document? section below.
You may be asked to provide some of the data from the system information tool when you contact HP or a third-party software manufacturer for assistance in troubleshooting a problem.

How do I access the System Information tool?

To access the HP System Information tool, follow the steps below.
  1. Click Start, System Information, then Help and Support and then System Information.
  2. Alternately, click Start, type system in the search field, and then select when it appears in the program listing.
  3. Alternately, hold the function key and press Esc. The System information window displays to show basic information. Click Advanced see the main System Information window.
The HP System Information tool opens. It may take several moments to scan the computer to verify the current information.

What details does the HP System Information tool provide?

The HP System Information window displays several fields containing information specific to your computer. Reviewing the information provided by this utility enables you to find answers to important questions such as:
  • How fast is my processor?
  • What is my serial number?
  • How many processors do I have?
  • What is my model number?
The Warranty Start Date field can be used to determine if your computer is still under warranty.
Any of the information described in the tables below may be required if you contact a customer support representative. Navigate through the information by clicking the links in the left pane of the System Information Window.
Basic Information: Computer
System Information Field Field Description
Computer nameThe name that you or your network administrator assigned to this particular computer.
ProcessorThe name and manufacturer of the processor in the computer.
Installed Memory (MB)The amount of RAM that is installed on the computer.
Hard DrivesA record of how many hard disks are physically installed on the computer, if they have been partitioned, what drive letters are assigned to each, and the free space available on each.

System Information Field Field Description
Serial Number An identifier unique to the individual computer. The product number, along with the serial number, are the two most important pieces of information that you can give to a customer service agent when contacting HP.
Product NameThe model name of the computer.
Product Number/SKU NumberAn identifier unique to this product line. Use this number to find product specification information and updated drivers on HP.com. The SKU number and the serial number are the two most important pieces of information you can give to a customer service agent when contacting HP. The SKU number (also known as the product number) usually follows a format similar to 12345#aba.
Warranty Start DateThe start date of the warranty for the computer. If the computer was manufactured prior to 2008, the warranty start date may be called a Service ID for your particular model.

If the warranty start date is different from what you expected to see, note that this date is set the first time that you start up the computer. Your receipt is always the final proof of purchase for warranty services.
Service IDThis field may be empty. IT departments in some companies use these numbers to keep track of the many computers they manage.
Basic Information: Windows
System Information Field Field Description
NameThe name of the operating system that is currently installed on the computer.
Version/BuildThe specific version of the operating system that is installed on the computer.
Service PackThe package of updates that has been added to the operating system, if any.
ArchitectureSpecifies if the operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit. This information is particularly important for downloading and installing updates for your operating system.
LanguageThe language in which your operating system displays--English, French, German, Japanese, etc.
The hardware links in the left side of the HP System Information window will provide information about the processor type and speed, the manufacturer and model of the system board, the version of the BIOS that is running on the computer, and information related to the graphics hardware and drivers, optical drives, and RAM that is installed on the computer.
NOTE:The HP System Information tool does not show the speed of the memory installed on the computer. To determine the memory speed that was shipped with your computer, look up the product specifications for the particular model of computer.

Where can I find a product specifications document?

The HP System Information tool lists basic hardware information for your computer, but if you want more specific information, you will need to know the Product Number displayed in the HP System Information tool.
  1. Go to www.hp.com .
  2. Click Support & Drivers at the top of the page.
  3. Select the Product Support and Troubleshooting tab.
  4. Type the product number, shown in the HP System Information tool, into the Search field, and then click the Search button. If prompted, narrow your search by selecting you specific model from the list.
  5. On the page that displays for your specific model, click Product information.
  6. On the Product Information page, click Product Specifications If there is a product specification document for your product, it will be listed on this page.
    If there is no product specification documents listed, click Manuals, then click the Maintenance and Service Guide for your notebook. Refer to the Specifications chapter in the Maintenance and Service Guide.
NOTE:The Maintenance and Service Guide contains information that applies to the entire notebook series. You can use the HP System Information tool to identify hardware components that are specific to your notebook.
