Audio Stops Working After Installing Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Understanding why notebook PCs with Conexant audio may display audio issues after installing Windows Vista SP1

Certain computers with Conexant audio driver versions earlier than 4.33.x.xx exhibit the following symptoms after installing Windows Vista SP1:
  • Audio is disabled or does not function.
  • A Windows Found New Hardware message displays.
  • A blue screen error occurs when reinstalling the audio driver from Recovery Manager, Windows Update or from a softpaq.
To resolve these issues, install the latest BIOS and the proper audio driver. If an HP factory image is installed on the computer, run:
  • HP Health Check
  • Online diagnostic HP Instant Support Professional Edition (ISPE)
If the HP factory image is not installed on the computer:
  • Run the Microsoft windows update.
  • Manually install the HP audio driver.

Running HP Health Check to download and install the latest BIOS and Conexant audio drivers automatically

If an HP factory image is installed on the computer and the latest version of HP Help and Support is installed, update the audio driver using HP Health Check. HP recommends this method for installing updated device drivers.
To download and install the latest BIOS and Conexant audio drivers automatically using Health Check, follow the steps below.
  1. Click Start, Help and Support, Troubleshooting tools, and then Health Check.
    NOTE:Verify that the current version of HP Help and Support is installed on the computer! If the banner on HP Help and Support does not display the HP logo, the latest version of HP Help and Support is not installed. Download and install the latest version of HP Help and Support.To get the latest version of HP Help and Support, go to hp.com/go/helpandsupport (English only) and click the links to download the HP Active Support Library ( sp41377 ), and HP Help and Support ( sp41601 ). Follow the on-screen instructions and then click Run to install the programs.
  2. Click Re-scan to test the computer.
  3. Health Check should indicate that Critical updates for the BIOS and Conexant audio driver are required.
    NOTE:When installing the new BIOS and updated drivers, install the BIOS first and restart the computer before installing any other device drivers.
  4. Click the repair link, and if prompted, select Click here to Uninstall the drivers automatically.
  5. Follow the prompts to allow Help and Support to download and install the updated BIOS and Conexant audio drivers.

Running online diagnostics to download and install the latest BIOS and Conexant audio drivers automatically

If HP Help and Support is not installed on the computer, or you choose not to install it, you can run the online diagnostics utility to update the BIOS and drivers.
  1. Open a browser and go to HP Instant Support Professional Edition .
  2. Click Run System Health Scan to launch an online diagnostic session, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Update the BIOS if it is not current. Install the updated BIOS and then restart computer.
  4. Update the Conexant audio driver if it is not current.

Downloading and installing the latest BIOS and Conexant audio drivers manually

If an HP factory image is not installed on the computer, or you choose not to install HP Help and Support, manually update the Conexant audio drivers.

Downloading and saving driver softpaqs to your computer

Download the driver softpaqs, save them to your computer, and then run the softpaqs to install the drivers.
NOTE:When installing updated BIOS and drivers, always install the BIOS first and restart the computer before installing any other device drivers.
  1. Open a browser and go to the Software and Driver Downloads page.
  2. Choose one of the following methods of locating the correct drivers:
    • Click Start Detection under Automatically detect product names/numbers and follow the on-screen instructions.
    • Select See support and troubleshooting information for product, and enter the part number for the computer from the Service Tag on the bottom of the computer, and then click .
    NOTE:If multiple part numbers display, refer to the Service Tag on the bottom of the computer to verify which part number to use.
  3. Click the name of the correct computer.
  4. Click Download drivers and software.
  5. From the list, select the appropriate operating system to display available downloads for the computer.
  6. From the list of available softpaq downloads, scroll to the BIOS section, click Download for the latest version for the compter, and then click Save.
  7. Select a convenient location, such your desktop, to save the Conexant audio driver file.
  8. From the list of softpaq downloads, scroll to the Driver-Audio section, click Download next to the latest version of the Conexant audio driver for the computer, and then click Save.

Installing the softpaqs

To install the updated BIOS, follow the steps below.
  1. Double-click the BIOS softpaq file that you saved, (on your desktop or other convenient location on the hard disk drive) and follow the on-screen instructions.
  2. Restart the computer following the installation.
To install the updated device driver, after successfully installing the BIOS, follow the steps below.
  1. Double-click the device driver softpaq file (on your desktop or other convenient location on the hard disk drive) and follow the on-screen instructions.
  2. It is not be necessary to reboot the computer following this installation.
