Issue
During installation of the HP software, the following error message displays on the computer: 'Error 1913. Could not update the ini C:\windows\win.ini. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.
'
Solution
First, choose your operating system.
Follow these steps to resolve the issue on a Windows XP operating system.
Step one: Clear the Read-only check box in the configuration settings file
- Click Start , click Search , and then click All files and folders .
- Type win.ini into the search field, and press the Enter key on the keyboard. You can click Stop when the file appears in the results pane.
- Right-click the win.ini file, and then click Properties .
- In the Win.ini Properties dialog box, click the Read-only check box to clear it, and then click OK .
Step two: Uninstall the software
HP installs an uninstall utility with the print driver to simplify the uninstall process. This uninstall utility removes the printer driver, not the additional software that installed with the driver.
- Unplug the USB cable connecting the printer to the computer.
- Click Start , click All Programs , point to HP , and then click the folder for the printer, which is labeled according to the printer series number.
- Click Uninstall or Uninstall Software . The software uninstaller opens in a new window.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall.
CAUTION:If asked to remove shared files, click No . Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.
Step three: Reinstall the software
You can use the software CD that shipped with the printer to install the software, or follow these steps to install the software from the HP Web site.
- Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
- Turn the product on.
- Browse to the Get Software and Drivers page: Get Software and Drivers
- Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
- Type your product number in the window.
- Click Next . If necessary click your model in a list of similar products.
- Click Software and Driver Downloads .
- Click the drop-down arrow (
), and then click your operating system. - Continue to the next step.
- Click the drop-down arrow (
), and then click your operating system. - Click Next . If necessary click your model in a list of similar products.
- Continue to the next step.
- Click the Plus sign (
) next to Driver
, and then click the driver that you want to download. - Click More Info , and then read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions (
) for complete download instructions. - Click Download . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
- Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
- Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
- Browse to where you saved the file, and then double-click the file to start the installation.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Follow these steps to resolve the issue on a Windows Vista operating system.
