Blinking Lights

Blinking lights

The blinking lights on the front of the product indicate the product status. These lights can be on, off, or blinking (flashing), depending on the status of the product. Blinking lights can indicate error conditions. They might also indicate that the product is initializing, processing a print job, or charging batteries.
Following are the different lights and buttons on the product control panel.
The following sections describe the most common issues related to the light patterns on your product. Find the issue related to the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:
  • Cartridge lights : Off
  • Printhead lights : Off
  • Network light or Wireless light : Off
  • Cancel light : Off
  • Resume light : Off
  • Power light : Off

    Cause
    The product is turned off, or the power cord is disconnected.
Connect the power cord, and then press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
In this normal condition, the following light pattern displays on the product control panel:
  • Cartridge lights : Off
  • Printhead lights : Off
  • Network light or Wireless light : Off
  • Cancel light : Off
  • Resume light : Off
  • Power light : On

The product is turned on and ready to print. No action is required.
The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:
  • Cartridge lights : Off
  • Printhead lights : Off
  • Network light or Wireless light : Off
  • Cancel light : Off
  • Resume light : Off
  • Power light : Blinking

    Cause
    Either the product is processing a print job, or the product is pausing for the ink to dry.
Wait for the product to finish processing the print job.
The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:
  • Cartridge lights : Off
  • Printhead lights : Off
  • Network light or Wireless light : Off
  • Cancel light : Off
  • Resume light : Blinking
  • Power light : Blinking

    Cause
    There might be a paper jam.
IMPORTANT : You must use these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.
Follow these steps in the order presented to resolve the paper jam.

Step one: Remove any loose paper
Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.
CAUTION:Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the print mechanism.

Step two: Clear the paper jam from the rear of the product
CAUTION: Do not lift the top cover and pull paper out from inside the product if you can pull it from the back of the product. Pulling paper from inside the product can cause mechanical damage and should be done carefully.
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.
  2. Push the buttons on the right and left side of the duplexer, and then pull the duplexer out of the product.

  3. Locate any jammed paper inside the product; grasp the paper with both hands, and then pull it toward you.
Step three: Clear the jam from the duplexer
Follow these steps to clear a jam from the duplexer.
  1. Squeeze the latch on the top of the duplexer, and then lower the duplexer cover.

  2. Gently remove any jammed paper from inside the duplexer.
  3. Reattach the duplexer cover by pushing it against the duplexer until it clicks into place.
  4. Slide the duplexer into the back of the product until it locks into place.

Step four: Clear the jam from the top of the product
  1. Open the top cover, and then remove any debris or loose paper that you can see.

    CAUTION:If there is paper inside the product, make sure that the carriage moves to the right of the product.
  2. Remove any paper scraps or wrinkled paper by pulling them out of the top of the product.
  3. Close the top cover.

  4. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
Step five: Print a self-test page

Follow these steps to print a self-test page.
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product, if it is not already on.
  2. Press and hold the Cancel button ( ) for three seconds.
  3. Release the Cancel button ( ). The self-test page prints.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , and the self-test report prints , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.
  • If the self-test report does not print , continue with the next solution.
Follow these steps to clear any jammed paper from the paper trays.
Step one: Clear the paper jam from tray 1
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.
  2. Lift the output tray.

  3. Check for any jammed paper or scraps of torn paper, and then remove the jammed or torn paper by pulling it toward you.
  4. Lower the output tray.
  5. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
Step two: Clear the paper jam from tray 2 (optional accessory)
  • If Tray 2 is installed , continue with the following steps.
  • If Tray 2 is not installed , skip to 'Solution three: Check the carriage path and reseat the printheads.'
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.
  2. Lift the product off Tray 2.
  3. Remove any jammed paper from the bottom of the product and from Tray 2.
  4. Reposition the product on top of Tray 2.
  5. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.

Follow these steps to print a self-test page
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product, if it is not already on.
  2. Press and hold the Cancel button ( ) for three seconds.
  3. Release the Cancel button ( ). The self-test page prints.

  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
There are multiple compartments in the product where paper can jam. Use the following steps to check for obstructions in these locations.

CAUTION:Do not remove the printheads when the carriage is in the main paper path access area (compartment 2), or in the printhead service station area (compartment 3).
Follow these steps in the order presented to check the carriage path and reseat the printheads.
Step one: Check the printhead access area (compartment 1) and the main paper path access area (compartment 2)
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
    CAUTION:You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.
  3. Open the top cover.

  4. Check the printhead access area (compartment 1) and the main paper path access area (compartment 2) for jammed paper or bits of paper. Remove any jams or bits of paper.
    CAUTION:Use a flashlight to check the carriage path thoroughly for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more jams are likely to occur.
  5. Close the top cover.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  7. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
Step two: Check the service station (compartment 3)
  1. Open the top cover.

    CAUTION:The carriage rests on the right side of the product in a locked position. Do not mistake a locked carriage for a stuck carriage.
  2. Press and hold the Resume button ( ) until the carriage moves to the printhead access area (compartment 1) on the left side of the product. Wait for the carriage to stop and become idle.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
    CAUTION:You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.
  4. Use a pen, pencil, screwdriver, or other pointed object to open the cover of the service station (compartment 3). Press the pointed end of the object on the left side of the cover, press down, and then slide the cover to the right.

  5. Looking through the main paper path access area (compartment 2), check the service station (compartment 3) for any paper or object that might restrict the carriage.

    NOTE:You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
  6. Remove any crumpled or jammed paper from the service station (compartment 3).
  7. Reach inside the main paper path access area (compartment 2), and then manually move the carriage.
  8. Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left, and then to the right.
  9. Close the top cover.

  10. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  11. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
Step three: Check the carriage, and then reseat the printheads
  1. Open the top cover.

    CAUTION:The carriage rests on the right side of the product in a locked position. Do not mistake a locked carriage for a stuck carriage.
  2. Press and hold the Resume button ( ) until the carriage moves to the printhead access area (compartment 1) on the left side of the product. Wait for the carriage to stop and become idle.
  3. Lift the printhead latch.

  4. Lift a printhead handle, and then use it to pull the printhead out of its slot.

  5. Repeat these steps to remove the other printhead.
    CAUTION:Do not leave printheads out of the carriage for more than five minutes.
  6. Check the inside, sides, and underside of the carriage for any debris or bits of paper.

  7. Reinsert each printhead into its color coded slot. The label on the printhead must match the label on the printhead latch. Press down firmly on the printhead to make sure that it contacts the carriage correctly.

  8. Pull the printhead latch all the way forward, and then press down to make sure that the latch engages. You might have to apply some pressure to engage the latch.

  9. Close the top cover.

  10. The product might go through a warm up period, and then an alignment page prints.
    • If the alignment page prints successfully, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
    • If the alignment page fails to print, continue with the next solution.
Follow these steps to clean the paper rollers inside the product.
Step one: Clean the rubber paper feed rollers
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.
  2. Turn the product so that you can access the rear side.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  4. Push the buttons on the right and left side of the duplexer, and then pull the duplexer out of the product.

  5. Wipe the rubber paper feed rollers with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled or bottled water. Rotate the rollers up carefully to clean all the way around.

  6. Make sure that the rollers on the duplexer are clean and in good condition. If any are missing, stuck, or loose, replace the duplexer with a new one.

  7. Allow the rollers to dry completely, and then reattach the duplexer.
  8. Slide the duplexer into place, and then gently push it in until it clicks or snaps into place.
  9. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

  3. While holding down the Power button ( ), press the Cancel button ( ) four times.
  4. Release the Power button ( ).

  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Follow these steps to reset the product.
Step one: Perform a full reset
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
  2. With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( ) to turn it on.

    Cause
    The product might be out of paper.
Follow these steps in the order presented to load paper in the product.
  1. Lift the output tray.

  2. Slide the paper width guides outward, and then remove any plain paper from the main tray.
  3. Load the paper print side down in the center of the tray.
  4. Slide the paper width guides inward to rest against the edge of the paper, and then gently push the stack of paper to the back of the tray.

  5. Press the Resume button ( ).
The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:
  • Cartridge lights : Off
  • Printhead lights : Off
  • Network light or Wireless light : Off
  • Cancel light : Off
  • Resume light : On
  • Power light : On

    Cause
    A cover is not closed completely, or the duplexer is missing or is not attached correctly.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Close all covers

Make sure that all covers on the HP product are completely closed.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Lock the duplexer into place

Follow these steps to lock the duplexer into place.
  1. If the duplexer is detached, slide the duplexer into the slot on the rear of the product.

    NOTE:Do not press the buttons on the sides of the duplexer when attaching it. Use the buttons only for removing the duplexer from the product.
  2. Lock the duplexer into place.

The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:
  • Cartridge lights : On
  • Printhead lights : Off
  • Network light or Wireless light : Off
  • Cancel light : Off
  • Resume light : Blinking
  • Power light : Blinking

    Cause
    One or more of the cartridges have expired.
Follow these solutions to resolve the issue.
IMPORTANT: HP recommends that you do not use expired cartridges. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of expired cartridges. Any damage or failure to the HP product that is caused from using expired cartridges will not be covered under warranty.

Solution one: Replace the expired cartridges

Follow these steps to replace the expired cartridge or cartridges.
  1. Open the cartridge cover.

  2. Remove the cartridge that requires replacement. Grasp the cartridge between the thumb and forefinger and then pull it out of the slot.

  3. Remove the new cartridge from its package.

  4. Align the cartridge with its color-coded slot, and then insert the cartridge into the slot.
  5. Press down firmly on the cartridge to ensure proper contact.
  6. If more than one cartridge is indicated, repeat steps 2 through 5 to replace other cartridges.
  7. Close the cartridge cover.

Solution two: Use the expired cartridges

If you choose to use the expired cartridges, press and hold the Power button ( ), and then press the Resume button ( ) three times. All of the lights (except for the Power light) will turn off, and then you can continue printing.
CAUTION:Any damage or failure to the HP product that is caused from using an expired cartridge will not be covered under warranty.
The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:
  • Cartridge lights : Blinking
  • Printhead lights : Off
  • Network light or Wireless light : Off
  • Cancel light : Off
  • Resume light : Blinking
  • Power light : Blinking

    Cause
    One or more of the cartridges is a non-HP cartridge.
Follow these solutions to resolve the issue.
IMPORTANT: HP recommends that you use genuine HP cartridges. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP cartridges. Any damage or failure to the HP product that is caused from using non-HP cartridges will not be covered under warranty.

Solution one: Replace the non-HP cartridges

Which cartridges you use depends on your country or region. Follow these steps to purchase cartridges or check cartridge compatibility for your printer using HP SureSupply.
  1. Click this link, HP SureSupply .
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and make sure that the country or region location is correct.

Follow these steps to replace cartridges.
  1. Open the cartridge cover.

  2. Remove the cartridge that requires replacement. Grasp the cartridge between the thumb and forefinger and then pull it out of the slot.

  5. Press down firmly on the cartridge to ensure proper contact.
  6. If more than one cartridge is indicated, repeat steps 2 through 5 to replace other cartridges.
  7. Close the cartridge cover.

Solution two: Use the non-HP cartridges

If you choose to use the non-HP cartridges, press the Resume button ( ) to continue printing.
CAUTION:Any damage or failure to the HP product that is caused from using non-HP cartridges will not be covered under warranty.

  • Cartridge lights : Off
  • Printhead lights : Blinking
  • Network light or Wireless light : Off
  • Cancel light : Off
  • Resume light : Off
  • Power light : On

    Cause
    One or more of the printheads are missing.
Follow these solutions to either install or replace one or more printheads.

Solution one: Install one or both of the printheads

If the printheads have not been installed, follow these steps to install them.
  1. Open the top cover of the product.
  2. Press and hold the Resume button ( ) until the carriage moves to the left and stops.
  3. Lift the printhead latch.

  4. Before installing the new printhead, shake the printhead up and down at least six times while it is still in its package.

  5. Remove the new printhead from its package, and then remove its orange protective caps.

  6. Insert the printhead into its color-coded slot. Press down firmly on the printhead until it snaps into place.
    NOTE:Make sure that the label on the printhead matches the label on the printhead latch.

  7. If both printhead lights are blinking, repeat steps 3 through 6 for the second printhead.
  8. Pull the printhead latch all the way forward, and then press down firmly to engage the latch.
  9. Close the top cover of the product.
  10. Wait while the product initializes the printheads and prints the alignment page.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Replace one or both of the printheads

Follow these steps to replace one or both of the printheads.
  1. Open the top cover on the product.
  2. Press and hold the Resume button ( ) until the carriage moves to the left and stops.
  3. Lift the printhead latch.

  4. Lift the handle on the printhead and use the handle to lift the printhead out of its slot.

  5. Before installing the new printhead, shake the printhead up and down at least six times while it is still in its package.

  6. Remove the new printhead from its package, and then remove its orange protective caps.

  7. Insert the printhead into its color-coded slot. Press down firmly on the printhead until it snaps into place.
    NOTE:Make sure that the label on the printhead matches the label on the printhead latch.

  8. If both printhead lights were blinking repeat steps 4 through 7 for the second printhead.
  9. Pull the printhead latch all the way forward, and then press down firmly to engage the latch.
  10. Close the top cover of the product.
  11. Wait while the product initializes the printheads and prints the alignment page.
The following light pattern displays on the product control panel:
  • Cartridge lights : Off
  • Printhead lights : Blinking
  • Network light or Wireless light : Off
  • Cancel light : Off
  • Resume light : Off
  • Power light : Blinking

    Cause
    There is an issue with one or more printheads.
Follow these steps in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Step one: Isolate the product for troubleshooting

  1. Disconnect the USB cable or network cable from the product.
  2. Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product. Wait fifteen seconds for the product to shut down completely.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet and then from the product. Wait a minimum of 3 minutes.
  4. Reconnect the power cord to the electrical outlet and then to the product. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product and make sure that the Power light is green.
  5. An error message 'Printhead are missing or damaged, replace the printhead ' might display on the computer. If the message displays, follow these steps.
    1. Delete the pending print jobs.
    2. If the error message still displays on the computer, restart the computer.
    3. Try printing a document.

Step two: Clean the electrical contacts

Follow these steps to clean the electrical contacts on the printhead.
  1. Make sure that the product is turned on.
  2. Open the top cover of the product.
  3. Press and hold the Resume button ( ) until the carriage moves to the left and stops.
  4. Release the Resume button ( ). Wait a few seconds, until the carriage is idle and silent.
  5. Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet.
    NOTE:Do not press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product, or the carriage will move out of reach. You must disconnect the power cord from the outlet.
  6. Lift the printhead latch.

  7. Lift the handle on the printhead indicated in the error message, and then use the handle to pull the printhead out of its slot.

  8. Use a dry, soft, lint-free cloth to remove any ink from the electrical contacts on the printhead.
    CAUTION:Wipe the electrical contacts only. Wiping the ink nozzles can damage the printhead.

  9. After cleaning the electrical contacts on the printhead, place the printhead on a sheet of paper or a paper towel. Make sure that the ink nozzles are facing up and not touching anything.
  10. Use the dry, soft, lint-free cloth to clean the electrical contacts inside the product.

  11. Make sure that all the electrical contacts have at least 5 minutes to dry, and then plug the power cord into the electrical outlet.
  12. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.
  13. Insert the printhead into its color-coded slot. Press down firmly on the printhead to make sure that the contact is correct.
  14. If both printhead lights were blinking, repeat steps 7 through 13 for the second printhead.
  15. Pull the printhead latch all the way forward, and then press down firmly to engage the latch.
  16. Close the top cover.
  17. Wait while the product initializes the printheads and prints the alignment page.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , see the next step.

  2. Open the top cover of the product.

  10. If both printhead lights were blinking, repeat steps 7 through 9 for the second printhead.
  11. Pull the printhead latch all the way forward, and then press down firmly to engage the latch.
  12. Close the top cover.
  13. Wait while the product initializes the printheads and prints the alignment page.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , see the next step.

Step four: Replace the printhead

Follow these steps to replace the printhead.
  1. Open the top cover of the product.

  3. Lift the printhead latch.

  5. Before installing the new printhead, shake the printhead up and down at least six times while it is still in its package.

  6. Remove the new printhead from the package.
  7. Remove the protective caps from the printhead.

  8. Insert the printhead into its color-coded slot. The label on the printhead must match the label on the printhead latch. Press down firmly on the printhead to make sure that the contact is correct.
  9. If both printhead lights were blinking repeat steps 4 through 8 for the second printhead.
  10. Pull the printhead latch all the way forward, and then press down firmly to engage the latch.
  11. Close the top cover of the product.
  12. Wait while the product initializes the printheads and prints the alignment page.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Step five: Service the printer

If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the printer section at the end of this document.
