'The feature you are trying to use is on a disk that is not available' or a Similar Message Displays on the Computer in Windows

This document is for HP Deskjet, Officejet, PSC, and Photosmart printers manufactured in or before 2010.
An error message displays, stating that a feature or file is unavailable and instructs you to insert a CD. The error contains a file name ending in ".msi." These errors can occur while Windows is starting up, or when you open a particular program.
Examples of these error messages include:
  • The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
  • The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'SolutionCenter.msi' in the box below.
  • The path 'c:hp\tmp\src\aio\Setup\TrayApp.msi' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to the installation package 'TrayApp.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product TrayApp.

A file or feature is missing on your computer. Download and install the latest printer software so that you can install the missing file and resolve the error message. If this solution does not resolve the issue, try the workaround at the end of this document.

Solution: Install the missing file

The error message that displays indicates the file that is missing on your computer. Use the following method to download and install the missing file from the HP website.
If you have a slow internet connection and have the software CD that shipped with your printer, check the CD to make sure that Windows 8 is listed on the label. If Windows 8 is listed on the CD label, use the method to install the missing file with the software CD.
HP recommends downloading and installing the latest printer software from the HP website.
Step one: Download and install the printer software from the HP website
Get the latest printer software and any missing files from the HP website.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. Type your printer model number.
    2. Click Go.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.
    A list of drivers and other downloads display.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature or solution software and driver listed, and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
Step two: Locate and install the missing .msi file in your computer's Temp folder
After installing the latest software for your printer, locate and install the missing .msi file to resolve the issue.
  1. Right-click the Start button () or the lower left corner of the screen, and then click Run. The Run window opens.
  2. In the text box, type %temp%, and then click OK. The Temp folder opens in a new window.
  3. Double-click to open the folder named 7zSXXX or 7zSXXX.tmp (the XXX values vary).
    NOTE:If there is more than one 7zSXXX folder in the Temp folder, select the folder with the most recent date.
  4. Click the folder that corresponds to the file name in the error message. For example, if your error message contains hpproductassistant.msi, click the hpproductassistant folder.
    NOTE:If you cannot find the associated .msi file, look for another 7zSXXX folder, and then search again.
  5. Double-click the .msi file icon () associated with the error message. For example, if your error message contains solutioncenter.msi, double-click the solutioncenter.msi file. The Windows Installer window opens and installs the missing file.

  6. Double-click to open the Setup folder.
  7. Click the folder that corresponds to the file name in the error message. For example, if your error message contains hpproductassistant.msi, click the hpproductassistant folder.
  8. In the right pane of the Windows Explorer window, double-click the .msi file icon () associated with the error message. For example, if your error message contains solutioncenter.msi, double-click the solutioncenter.msi file. The Windows Installer window opens and installs the missing file.

Solution one: Install the missing file

  7. Click the folder that corresponds to the file name in the error message. For example, if your error message contains hpproductassistant.msi, click the hpproductassistant folder.
  8. In the right pane of the Windows Explorer window, double-click the .msi file icon () associated with the error message. For example, if your error message contains solutioncenter.msi, double-click the solutioncenter.msi file. The Windows Installer window opens and installs the missing file.

Solution two: Uninstall the software, re-register the Windows Installer, and reinstall the software

Make sure that the Windows Installer is registered and is not disabled in Windows XP.

Step one: Uninstall the HP software

Use one of the following methods to perform a level-three uninstall of the HP software.
If you have not previously downloaded the software from the HP website, follow these steps to remove the software.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Turn on the printer.
  3. Go to the Get software and drivers web page.
  4. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign () next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
  5. Click the Plus sign () next to Driver. A list of drivers for your printer displays.
  6. Click Full Feature Software and Drivers.
  7. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions () for complete download instructions.
  8. Click Download. This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
  9. Click Save, and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file. Consider saving the file to your desktop for easy reference later in these steps.
  10. Click Save. The software downloads to your computer.
  11. When the download completes, click Start (), and then click Search. The Search Results window opens.
  12. Under What do you want to search for?, click All files and folders.
  13. Type Uninstall_L3 in the first search box, and then click Search.
  14. Double-click the Uninstall_L3.bat file. If there is more than one file in the search results, expand the In Folder column, and then look in the Temp folder for the file with 7zXXX.tmp in the filename (XXX varies by driver version). The HP uninstaller opens.
    NOTE:If the Welcome to HP! screen opens, click Cancel or Exit.
  15. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the level-three uninstall.
If your internet connection is slow and you have the software CD that came with your printer, follow these steps to perform a level-three software uninstall using the printer's software CD.
  1. Insert the HP software CD into the computer's CD drive.
  2. If the Welcome to HP! screen opens, click Cancel or Exit.
  3. On the Windows taskbar, click Start (), and then click Run. The Run window opens.
  4. On the Run window, click Browse. The Browse window opens.
  5. Navigate to the CD drive on your computer (you can usually find the CD drive by clicking My Computer), right-click the file, and then click Open.
    NOTE:If you double-click the file, the HP Installer launches. Click Exit, and then right-click the file to open the CD drive.
  6. Double-click the Util folder, and then double click the ccc folder. A list of files on the software CD displays.
  7. Double-click the Uninstall_L3.bat file. The Run window opens again with the path to theUninstall_L3.bat file.
  8. Click OK, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the level-three uninstall.

Step two: Re-register Windows Installer

  1. Click Start (), click Run, type MSIEXEC/UNREGISTER, and then click OK.
    NOTE:It might look like nothing happens, but the action completes.
  2. Click Start (), and then click Run.
  3. In the Run window, type MSIEXEC/REGSERVER, and then click OK.
    NOTE:Even when you do this correctly, it might look like nothing happens, or you might see an hourglass for a short time. However, after you run this command, the operation completes.

Step three: Reinstall the software

Use one of the following methods to reinstall the HP software on your computer.
HP recommends downloading and installing the latest printer software from the HP website.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. Type your printer model number.
    2. Click Go.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.
    A list of drivers and other downloads display.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature or solution software and driver listed, and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
If you have a slow internet connection and have the software CD that shipped with your printer, follow these steps to install the missing file using the software CD.
If you do not have the CD, use the method to install the latest software from the HP website.
CAUTION:Do not connect the USB cable until prompted to do so during software installation. HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 3 m (10 feet) long.
NOTE:If you get any firewall messages during installation, click continue, unblock, yes, allow, or permit. Otherwise the software installation fails.
  1. Insert the software CD that came with your printer into the CD drive of the computer. The software installer starts automatically.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation.

Workaround

If the solutions in this document did not resolve the error, remove the HP software, and then reinstall the basic version of the software. With this workaround, you install the print driver without extras, such as HP Product Assistant.

Step one: Uninstall the HP software

Follow the steps for your operating system to uninstall the printer software.
  1. Unplug the USB cable connecting the printer to the computer.
  2. Click Start (), and then click Control Panel.
  3. Click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Change/Remove.
  4. Click Uninstall to remove the software.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
    NOTE:If asked to remove shared files, click No. Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.
  1. Unplug the USB cable connecting the printer to the computer.
  2. Click the Windows icon (), click Control Panel, and then click Programs.
  3. Under Programs and Features, click Uninstall a program.
  4. In the list of programs that opens, right-click the name of your printer, click Uninstall, and then click Yes.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
    NOTE:If asked to remove shared files, click No. Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.
  1. Unplug the USB cable connecting the printer to the computer.
  2. Click the Windows icon (), click Control Panel, and then click Programs and Features.
  3. In the list of programs that opens, right-click the name of your printer, click Uninstall, and then click Yes.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
    NOTE:If asked to remove shared files, click No. Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.
  1. Unplug the USB cable connecting the printer to the computer.
  2. Right-click the Start button () or the lower left corner of the screen, click Control Panel, and then click Programs and Features.
  3. In the list of programs that opens, right-click the name of your printer, click Uninstall, and then click Yes.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
    NOTE:If asked to remove shared files, click No. Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.

Step two: Install the basic software

Use one of the following methods to install the basic version of the HP software.
HP recommends downloading and installing the basic printer software from the HP website.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. If the Welcome to HP Support page opens, follow these steps:
    1. Type your printer model number.
    2. Click Go.
      You might need to select your printer model number from a list of similar printer models.
  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.
    A list of drivers and other downloads display.
  5. Scroll down the page, and then click Driver - Product Installation Software.
  6. Click Download next to the full feature or solution software and driver listed, and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
NOTE:During the installation, you might be prompted to set up the printer hardware. If you have already set up the printer hardware, you can click Next to bypass any hardware setup steps.
Follow these steps to install the software with the printer CD. If you no longer have the printer CD, see the next method to download and install the software.
CAUTION:Do not connect the USB cable until prompted to do so during software installation. HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 3 m (10 feet) long.
NOTE:If you get any firewall messages during the installation, click continue, unblock, yes, allow, or permit. Otherwise the software installation fails.
  1. Insert the software CD into the CD drive of the computer. The software installer starts automatically.
    NOTE:If the User Account Control screen opens, click Allow to continue.
    If the Install Wizard does not open automatically, follow these steps to open it:
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions until you receive a prompt to select an installation type. Select the basic option, which might be Custom, Express, or Advanced.
  3. When the Install Wizard prompts you to select the programs to install with the printer, select the following options, and then uncheck all others:
    • HP Printer Driver (the exact name of the driver varies by HP printer)
    • HP Imaging Device Functions
    • HP Solution Center (optional)
      WARNING:If your error message relates to hpsolutioncenter.msi, do not select this file.
    • Any other desired files
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the basic-software installation.
