'The feature you are trying to use is on a disk that is not available' or a Similar Message Displays on the Computer in Windows

Issue

An error message displays, stating that a feature or file is unavailable and instructs you to insert a CD. The error contains a file name ending in ".msi." These errors can occur while Windows is starting up, or when you open a particular program.
Examples of these error messages include:
  • The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
  • The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'SolutionCenter.msi' in the box below.
  • The path 'c:hp\tmp\src\aio\Setup\TrayApp.msi' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to the installation package 'TrayApp.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product TrayApp.
If you get an 'hpqgpc01.exe ' error message, go to "hpqgpc01.exe" Error Message Appears when Attempting to Shut Down the Computer or your solution.
If you are looking for the latest software for your printer , browse to the Get software and drivers to download the software.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
NOTE:If the following solutions do not resolve the issue, you can try the workaround at the end of this document.

Solution one: Install the missing file

Use one of the following methods to install the missing file as indicated by the error message.
If you have the software CD that shipped with your printer, follow these steps to install the missing file. If you do not have the CD, skip to the next method.
  1. Insert the HP software CD in the computer CD drive.
  2. If the HP installation screen opens, click Exit to cancel the installer.
  3. Open Windows Explorer:
    • Windows XP : Right-click Start , and then click Explore .
    • Windows Vista and Windows 7 : Right-click the Windows icon ( ), and then click Explore .
    Windows Explorer opens in a new window.
  4. In the Folders pane, navigate to the CD drive on your computer.
  5. Click the plus sign ( ) next to the CD drive to expand the list.
  6. Click the plus sign ( ) next to Setup folder.
  7. Click the folder that corresponds to the file name in the error message. For example, if your error message contains hpproductassistant.msi , click the hpproductassistant folder.
  8. In the right pane of the Windows Explorer window, double-click the .msi file icon ( ) associated with the error message. For example, if your error message contains solutioncenter.msi , double-click the solutioncenter.msi file. The Windows Installer window opens and installs the missing file.
If you do not have the software CD that shipped with your printer, follow these steps to install the missing file.

Step one: Download and run the printer software from the HP website

  1. Browse to Get Software and Drivers page: Get software and drivers .
  2. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
  3. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver . A list of drivers for your printer displays.
  4. Click Full Feature Software and Drivers .
  5. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  6. Click Download . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
  7. When the File Download window opens, click Run .
    NOTE:You must first download the software, and then extract it.
  8. If the computer prompts again to allow the software to run, click Run to allow it.
  9. When prompted to choose a directory to save the extracted file to, remain at the default file location, and then click Extract . Wait until the file finishes the extraction.
    NOTE:When the file extracts, the missing .msi file(s) is placed into your computer's Temp folder, where it can be accessed.
  10. In the HP installation window, click Exit or Cancel to stop the installation.

Step two: Locate the missing .msi file in your computers temp folder

  1. Open the Run dialog box.
    • Windows XP : Click Start ( ), and then click Run .
    • Windows Vista and Windows 7 : Click the Windows icon ( ); in the Search programs and files box, type Run , and then press Enter .
    The Run window opens.
  2. In the Open text box, type %temp% , and then press Enter . The Temp folder opens in a new window.
    NOTE:If the Temp displays as a single pane, click View , click Explorer Bar , and then click Folders to display the two-pane view.
  3. In the left pane, click the Plus sign ( ) next to the folder that begins with 7zSXXX or 7zSXXX.tmp (the XXX values vary).
    NOTE:There might be more than one 7zSXXX folder in the Temp folder on your computer. Choose the file with the most recent date.
  4. Click the folder that corresponds to the file name in the error message. For example, if your error message contains hpproductassistant.msi , click the hpproductassistant folder.
    NOTE:If you cannot find the associated .msi file, look for another 7zSXXX and search again.
  5. Double-click the .msi file icon ( ) associated with the error message. For example, if your error message contains solutioncenter.msi , double-click the solutioncenter.msi file. The Windows Installer window opens and installs the missing file.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution two (XP users only): Uninstall the software, reregister the Windows Installer, and reinstall the software

Follow these steps in the order presented to make sure that the Windows Installer is registered and is not disabled in Windows XP.
Important : This solution does not apply to Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 operating systems. Use the following steps only for the Windows XP operating system.

Step one: Uninstall the HP software

Use one of the following methods to perform a level-three uninstall of the HP software.
If you have not previously downloaded the software from the HP website, follow these steps to remove the software.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the printer and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Turn on the printer.
  3. Browse to Get Software and Drivers page: Get software and drivers .
  4. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign ( ) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
  5. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver . A list of drivers for your printer displays.
  6. Click Full Feature Software and Drivers .
  7. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  8. Click Download . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
  9. Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file. Consider saving the file to your desktop for easy reference later in these steps.
  10. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
  11. When the download completes, click Start ( ), and then click Search . The Search Results window opens.
  12. Under What do you want to search for? , click All files and folders .
  13. Type Uninstall_L3 in the first search box, and then click Search .
  14. Double-click the Uninstall_L3.bat file. If there is more than one file in the search results, expand the In Folder column, and then look in the Temp folder for the file with 7zXXX.tmp in the filename (XXX varies by driver version). The HP uninstaller opens.
    NOTE:If the Welcome to HP! screen opens, click Cancel or Exit .
  15. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the level-three uninstall.
Follow these steps to perform a level-three software uninstall using the printer's software CD. If you do not have the CD, use the previous method to remove the software.
  1. Insert the HP software CD into the computer's CD drive.
  2. If the Welcome to HP! screen opens, click Cancel or Exit .
  3. On the Windows taskbar, click Start ( ), and then click Run . The Run window opens.
  4. On the Run window, click Browse . The Browse window opens.
  5. Navigate to the CD drive on your computer (you can find the CD drive by clicking My Computer usually), right-click the file, and then click Open .
    NOTE:If you double-click the file, the HP Installer launches. Click Exit , and then right-click the file to open the CD drive.
  6. Double-click the Util folder, and then double click the ccc folder. A list of files on the software CD displays.
  7. Double-click the Uninstall_L3.bat file. The Run window opens again with the path to theUninstall_L3.bat file.
  8. Click OK , and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the level-three uninstall.

Step two: Re-register Windows Installer

  1. Click Start ( ), click Run , type MSIEXEC/UNREGISTER , and then click OK .
    NOTE:Even if you do this correctly, it might look like nothing happens, but it does.
  2. Click Start ( ), and then click Run .
  3. In the Run window, type MSIEXEC/REGSERVER , and then click OK .
    NOTE:Even if you do this correctly, it might look like nothing happens, or you might see an hourglass for a short time. However, after you run this command, the operation completes.

Step three: Reinstall the software

Use one of the following methods to reinstall the HP software on your computer.
Follow these steps to install the software with the printer CD. If you no longer have the printer CD, see the next method to download and install the software.
CAUTION:Do not connect the USB cable until prompted to do so during software installation. HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 3 m (10 feet) long.
NOTE:If you get any firewall messages during installation, click continue , unblock , yes , allow , or permit . Otherwise the software installation fails.
  1. Insert the software CD that came with your printer into the CD drive of the computer. The software installer starts automatically.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation.
Step one: Download the software from the HP website
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. Browse to the Get Software and Drivers page: Get Software and Drivers .
  4. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
      1. Type your product number in the window.
      2. Click Next . You might also need to click your model in a list of similar HP products.
      3. Click Software and Driver Downloads .
      4. Click the drop-down arrow ( ), and then click your operating system.
      5. Click Next , and then continue to the next step.

      2. Click Next .
      3. Continue to the next step.
  5. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver , and then click the driver that you want to download.
  6. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  7. Click Download .
  8. If the File Download Security Warning window displays, click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
  9. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
    Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
Step two: Install the software
During the installation, the Basic Device Software is required to enable full printer functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your printer.
Follow these steps to install the downloaded software.
  1. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
    NOTE:If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then click it.
  2. You can accept the default place to save the files. Click Next , and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for installation.
  3. When the installation starts, follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
    NOTE:During the installation, a message might prompt you to set up the printer hardware. If you have already set up the printer hardware, you can click Next to bypass any hardware setup steps.

Workaround

If the preceding solutions did not resolve the error, you can remove the HP software, and then reinstall the basic version of the software. With this workaround, you install the print driver without extras, such as HP Product Assistant.

Step one: Uninstall the HP software

Follow the steps for your operating system to uninstall the printer software.
  1. Unplug the USB cable connecting the printer to the computer.
  2. Click Start ( ), and then click Control Panel .
  3. Click Add or Remove Programs , and then click Change/Remove .
  4. Click Uninstall to remove the software.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
    NOTE:If asked to remove shared files, click No . Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.
  1. Unplug the USB cable connecting the printer to the computer.
  2. Click the Windows icon ( ), click Control Panel , and then click Programs .
  3. Under Programs and Features , click Uninstall a program .
  4. In the list of programs that opens, right-click the name of your printer, click Uninstall , and then click Yes .
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
    NOTE:If asked to remove shared files, click No . Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.

Step two: Install the basic software

Use one of the following methods to install the basic version of the HP software.
Follow these steps to install the software with the printer CD. If you no longer have the printer CD, see the next method to download and install the software.
CAUTION:Do not connect the USB cable until prompted to do so during software installation. HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 3 m (10 feet) long.
NOTE:If you get any firewall messages during the installation, click continue , unblock , yes , allow , or permit . Otherwise the software installation fails.
  1. Insert the software CD into the CD drive of the computer. The software installer starts automatically.
    NOTE:If the User Account Control screen opens, click Allow to continue.
    If the Install Wizard does not open automatically, follow these steps to open it:
    • Windows XP : Click Start ( ), click My Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
    • Windows Vista and Windows 7 : Click the Windows icon ( ), click Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions until you receive a prompt to select an installation type. Select the basic option, which might be Custom , Express , or Advanced .
  3. When the Install Wizard prompts you to select the programs to install with the printer, select the following options, and then uncheck all others:
    • HP Printer Driver (the exact name of the driver varies by HP printer)
    • HP Imaging Device Functions
    • HP Solution Center (optional; if your error message relates to hpsolutioncenter.msi, do not select this file)
    • Any other desired files
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the basic-software installation.
