HP Mini 1001TU PC Troubleshooting

Software Installation Stops Because of the Screen Resolution Requirements

  • PrintPrint
This document pertains to HP Mini models with Windows XP.
When installing product software on the Mini notebook, the installation can stop after checking the computer system requirements. This occurs because the computer's screen resolution is below the minimum requirement of the product software as shown in the example below.
Because of the small screen on the Mini, you may not see the entire window. In most cases you can either scroll down the window or hide the taskbar to view more of the window. At issue is the Mini's recommended resolution is 800x600, but its screen size is only 800x590.
To continue the installation, you can change the screen resolution, install the software application from either the web or from an USB drive, and then reset the screen resolution to its original settings.

Changing the display resolution settings

To change the screen resolution, follow these steps:
  1. If the installation has stopped, click Help on the lower left corner on the window and then click Properties to open the Display Properties window.
Alternately, if you have cancelled the installation, right-click with the mouse on your Desktop, and click Properties to open the Display Properties window.
  2. Click Settings tab, click Advanced button at the bottom of the window. A new window opens to adjust the monitor settings.
  3. Click Monitor tab, List All Modes button. The List All Modes window opens.
  4. From the resulting list, select 800 x600, True Color (32 bit), 60 Hertz and click OK .
  5. Click OK twice more to return to the System Requirements Results window.
  6. Click Retry . The new setting satisfy the system requirements and you can continue with the product installation by following the on-screen instructions.

Downloading software

After you have changed the resolution settings, you can then install software from web or from a optical disc to the hard drive.
Since the Mini does not have a built-in optical drive, to install programs from discs you will need a USB optical disc drive. Connect the USB cable from the USB drive to the Mini before starting the installation process. HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 10 feet (3m) long. Connect the USB cable from the USB drive to the Mini.

Returning the display resolution settings to the original values

To return the display settings to their original values, follow these steps:
  1. On your Desktop, right-click with the mouse, and click Properties to open the Display Properties window.
  2. Click Settings tab, click Advanced button at the bottom of the window. A new window opens to adjust the monitor settings.
  3. Click Monitor tab, List All Modes button. The List All Modes window opens.
  4. From the resulting list, select 1024x576, True Color (32 bit), 60 Hertz and click OK .
  5. Click OK twice more to return to the System Requirements Results window.

Viewing text in a window that is larger than the screen display

Some windows may be too long to completely display the installation window on the Mini display. To view the entire window, try the following options:
  1. Scrollable windows:
Adjust to the desired position by selecting the title bar at the top of the window. This may require you to use the scroll bar that displays at the right of the window.
  2. Non-scrollable windows:
If you cannot scroll the window to view the buttons at the bottom of the screen you can create more space by hiding the windows taskbar. To hide the taskbar:
Right-click the taskbar, and click Properties .
Either select the checkbox Auto-hide the taskbar or unselect the Keep the taskbar on top of other windows checkbox and click OK .
NOTE:To redisplay the taskbar, close or minimize any large window, move the cursor to the area of the screen where the taskbar normally appears.
