You can check to see how much ink is left in the cartridges and determine how soon a cartridge needs to be replaced.
NOTE:Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When an indicator shows low ink levels, keep a replacement cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. Cartridges do not need to be replaced until print quality becomes unacceptable.
Checking ink levels
Use one of the following methods to check ink levels.
Method one: Check ink levels from HP Solution Center
Open HP Solution Center:
Windows 2000 and XP: Click Start
, click All Programs
, click HP
, and then click HP Solution Center
.
Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (
), click All Programs
, click HP
, and then click HP Solution Center
.
HP Solution Center opens in a new window.
Click Settings

).
In the Print Settings
area, click Printer Toolbox
. The printer Toolbox
opens.
Click the Estimated Ink Levels
tab. The estimated ink levels display in a graphic on the computer.

The colored bars represent the estimated ink levels in the corresponding cartridge. Full color bars represent high ink levels, while color bars that approach the bottom of the bar represent low ink.
Method two: Check ink levels from the print driver
Open the Printers and Faxes
or the Printers
folder.
Windows XP: Click Start
, click Control Panel
, and then double-click Printers and Faxes
.
Windows 2000: Click Start
, point to Settings
, and then double-click Printers and Faxes
.
Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (
), click Settings
, click Control Panel
, and then click Printers
.
Right-click the printer icon for your product, and then click Printing Preferences
. The Printing Preferences
dialog box opens.
Click Printer Services
. The printer Toolbox
opens.
Click the Estimated Ink Levels
