The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) Does Not Pick Up Paper

  • PrintPrint

Issue

The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) on the printer does not pick up paper. The issue might include an error message on the printer control panel display, blinking or flashing lights, or an error message on the computer.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Solution one: Check the paper

  1. Use the Power button to turn off the printer.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer, wait 30 seconds, reconnect the power cord to the back of the printer, and then use the Power button to turn on the printer.
  3. Make sure that the paper that is loaded in the printer is a supported paper type for the printer.
NOTE:The ADF does not accept photo paper.
  4. Make sure that the paper is clean, undamaged, and in good condition. The ADF cannot process paper with staples or paper clips.
  5. Make sure that no more than 50 sheets of paper are loaded in the ADF input tray at one time.
  6. Make sure that the ADF is detecting the paper in the input tray. The printer often makes a noise, such as a beep, or a message appears on the control panel display when paper is inserted in the input tray.
  7. Insert and remove the paper from the input tray several times to make sure that the paper sensor is working correctly.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Clean the ADF

  1. Open the ADF cover.

  4. Firmly close the ADF cover.
  5. Try using the ADF again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Use less paper

  1. Remove all paper from the ADF input tray.
  2. Load 10-25 sheets of clean, white, undamaged, letter or A4 size paper in the ADF input tray, and then try the job again.
If the job is successful, the issue is resolved, and you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the job is not successful, continue to the next step.
  3. Load one or two sheets of clean, white, undamaged, letter or A4 size paper in the ADF input tray, and then try the job again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Reset the printer

  1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.

  5. Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  7. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
  8. Try the job again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
