Issue

An issue occurs when attempting to send a fax, but no error message appears on the product display. To troubleshoot error messages, go to An Error Message Appears on the Display (c01756193) (in English).
Review the symptoms below, select the symptom that best describes your issue, and then click that symptom to troubleshoot the issue.

Display reads 'Ready' with no attempt to send the fax

If the display reads 'Ready,' but the fax will not send, follow these steps.

Solution one: Check the fax activity log for errors

  1. Press the Setup button ().
  2. Use the Arrow keys () to select Reports, select Fax reports, select Fax activity log, select Print log now, and then press OK.
    The fax activity log prints.

Solution two: Check the phone and handset

If there is a phone or handset connected to the product, verify that each is hung up properly.

Solution three: Connect the product directly into the wall

Disconnect any other lines between the product and the wall. Connect the product direcly to the wall jack, and then try to send the fax again.

Faxes are received but cannot be sent

If the fax stops transmitting while sending, or nothing happens when you press the Send button, follow these steps.

Fax stops during sending

This product only supports paper less than 381 mm (15 in). Use only letter, A4, or legal sized paper for sending faxes.
To send this fax, copy or print the original document onto shorter paper, and then resend.

Nothing happens when the Send button is pressed

Make sure the fax is configured correctly.

Option one: Run the Fax Setup Utility

  1. Windows XP: Click Start, point to All Programs, point to HP, and then select Fax Setup Utility.
    Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (), point to All Programs, point to HP, and then select Fax Setup Utility.
    The Fax Setup Utility opens in a new window.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to configure the product.

Option two: Complete the Fax setup

  1. Press the Setup button ().
  2. Use the Arrow keys () to select Fax setup, select Fax Header, select Fax send setup, and then press OK. Complete all the options from this menu.

Heading three: Complete the fax setup from the manual

  1. Open a new window to browse to the product manual:
    1. Right-click this link, Select Software and Drivers , and then click Open in New Window.
    2. If prompted, type your product number. You might also need to click it in a list of similar products.
    3. From the Product quick links section, select Product Manuals.
    4. Select Getting started guide to open it, and follow the instructions on setting up the fax.

Use a dial prefix for an outside line

Follow these steps to set a prefix for an outside line, or to send a fax without a prefix if this option is on.

Option one: Set up a dial prefix

  1. Press the Setup button ().
  2. Use the Arrow keys () to select Fax setup, select System setup, select Dial prefix, select On, and then press OK.
  3. Enter the prefix, and the press OK.

Option two: Send the fax by entering a manual prefix

Follow these steps to enter a prefix and send the fax manually.
  1. Press the Start fax button.
  2. Listen for a dial tone.
  3. Enter the prefix.
  4. Enter the fax number.

Product is password protected

If you do not know the password for the product, contact your system administrator.

Send a fax to an international number

Follow these steps to send the fax manually.
  1. Load the originals in the automatic document feeded (ADF).
  2. Press the Start fax button.
  3. Listen for a dial tone.
  4. Enter the dial prefix (if required).
  5. Enter the country code, followed by the fax number.
  6. Wait for pauses as you hear the tones on the phone.
  7. Follow any prompts that appear on the display.

Send a fax using group dial

  1. Verify the phone numbers are correct.
  2. If a dial prefix is needed for an outside line, verify the dial prefix is set to on.
    1. Press the Setup button ().
    2. Use the Arrow keys () to select Fax setup, select System setup, select Dial prefix, select On, and then press OK.
    3. Enter the prefix, and the press OK.
  3. Verify that each entry in the group dial is set as a speed dial. Numbers that are not listed as a speed dial will not work in a group dial.

Send a fax using speed dial

  1. Verify the phone numbers are correct.
  2. If a dial prefix is needed for an outside line, verify the dial prefix is set to on.
    1. Press the Setup button ().
    2. Use the Arrow keys () to select Fax setup, select System setup, select Dial prefix, select On, and then press OK.
    3. Enter the prefix, and the press OK.

Send a fax when a phone is connected to the fax machine

  1. Verify the phone is hung up properly.
  2. Verify the phone is not being used for a phone call when sending a fax.

Fax options are not available from the control panel

Your system administrator can enable or disable fax options. Contact your system administrator to enable fax capabilities.

Receive a recorded message when trying to send a fax

  1. Verify the fax number was dialed correctly.
  2. If a dial prefix is needed for an outside line, verify the dial prefix is set to on.
    1. Press the Setup button ().
    2. Use the Arrow keys () to select Fax setup, select System setup, select Dial prefix, select On, and then press OK.
    3. Enter the prefix, and the press OK.
  3. Verify the phone service is not blocked, including long distance calling.
