Upgrading to Windows 7
This document pertains to HP and Compaq desktop PCs.
HP is committed to helping you upgrade your HP or Compaq computer to Windows 7. This document is about installing Windows 7 on HP and Compaq desktop computers. It provides instructions to help guide you through the installation process.
CAUTION:Before installing Windows 7, back up important files and make sure you have HP System Recovery discs!
Important information about installing Windows 7
There are two methods to install Windows 7 onto a computer:
- Upgrade - installs Windows 7 over an existing Windows Vista installation. Most or all of your existing software programs, drivers, and personal files are available after upgrading. You can only perform an Upgrade if your computer has Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business or Ultimate Edition with Service Pack 1 or 2.
- Custom Install - erases all files on the hard drive partition before installing Windows 7. Any computer that meets the minimum hardware requirements can use Custom Install to install Windows 7. Your software programs, drivers, and files are no longer available after using Custom Install. Make sure to backup important files before doing a Custom Install!
Minimum System Requirements
Your computer hardware must meet the following minimum system requirements before you can install Windows 7.
Minimum hardware requirements
- 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
- 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
- 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
- DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Operating System requirements
Installing Windows 7 using Custom Install does not require an operating system on the hard drive. A custom Install removes all files from your hard drive partition and installs Windows 7. If your computer currently has Windows XP, Windows Vista Home Edition, Windows Vista Starter Edition, a prerelease version of Windows 7 (beta or RC), or any other operating system, you can use Custom Install to install Windows 7.
Upgrading to Windows 7 requires Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Enterprise, Business, or Ultimate with Service Pack 1 or 2 on the hard drive. The language type for the Windows 7 upgrade disc must be the same languages type as your version of Vista.

Using the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD
If you participated in the Upgrade Option Program from HP and you obtained a disc, this DVD contains most of the software and drivers needed for upgrading HP and Compaq Desktop and TouchSmart computers to Windows 7. This useful disc came with the Windows 7 upgrade kit if you ordered the Windows 7 upgrade from HP.
NOTE:The Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP is no longer accepting new orders.
To use the disc, insert it into the drive while Windows Vista is open and follow the information that appears. Later, after installing Windows 7, insert the disc again to get the latest updates.
This disc can help speed up the time it takes to find software and drivers. However, the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD is not required, nor does it contain all available updates for all HP computers.
NOTE:If you are using the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD, after successfully upgrading to Windows 7, do not connect to the Internet. Unplug the LAN cable, do not set up your wireless LAN, and do not connect to the Internet using a modem. Connect to the Internet only after you have completed Phase 3: Post Install by running the HPUA icon on the desktop and have restarted your computer. This is necessary to prevent driver and software update conflicts that can arise between the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD, Windows Update and HP Update.
Preparing the computer for Windows 7
Use the steps in this section to prepare your computer for Windows 7.
NOTE: If you participated in the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP and have an HP Upgrade Assistant DVD, insert the DVD now and follow the instructions that appear.
Step 1: Update the BIOS
Use the following steps to update the BIOS to avoid installation problems.
- Turn on the computer and immediately press the F10 key repeatedly until a BIOS Setup Utility screen opens. Some computers use F1 instead of F10.
- Write down the BIOS revision number from the main page (not from the bottom of the screen).
- Go to the HP Support Web site ( http://www.hp.com/support ), select Software and Drivers, and enter your computer model number to find software and driver updates for your computer.
- If a BIOS update is available that has a higher revision number, download and install it following the instructions on the Web site.

Step 2: Find software and driver updates compatible with Windows 7
Get all available software and driver updates as follows:
- Download Windows 7 software and driver updates for your computer from HP (SoftPaqs) and store them on a USB drive or burn them to disc. For more information on downloading software from HP, see Obtaining Software and Drivers .
- If you are upgrading, see Updating Drivers and Software with Windows Update and install all Important and Recommended updates. Also, install all optional updates. When you have finished installing Windows updates, restart the computer and continue installing Windows Updates until it displays "Windows is up to date". If you are using a Windows Vista version that is not Service Pack 1 or better, install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). You do not have to install Windows Vista SP2.
- If you are upgrading, download and install the latest antivirus and antispyware definitions for your security software. After you have installed the latest definitions, use your security software to scan for malware. Fix any problems that are found.NOTE: If you are using AVG 8.0 Security Software, you need to upgrade to a Windows 7 compatible version to keep your current program subscription. AVG 8.0 comes with HP Firebird computers and is not compatible with Windows 7.
- If you are upgrading, download and install the latest HP SoftPaqs for Windows Vista. For more information on downloading software from HP, see Obtaining Software and Drivers .
Step 3: Recovery and backing up your important files
If you have not already done so, create a set of system recovery discs. If a problem occurs during installation, you can use recovery discs to return your computer back to its original software configuration. If you cannot find your recovery discs, see Looking for Recovery Discs?
Back up your important files. You can copy all your files to CDs, DVDs or other external storage device. You may also use Microsoft Backup and Restore Center or Microsoft Windows Easy Transfer to back up your Windows files and transfer them to Windows 7. Windows Easy Transfer is compatible with XP, Vista, it comes with Windows 7 and Microsoft has provided updated versions of Windows Easy transfer for Vista and XP that makes backing up files easy.
When finished, verify that the backup was successful and that you can access your files using your current operating system.

Do not use backup software that is incompatible with Windows 7! If you want to backup your files using other software, you must first verify that it is compatible with Windows 7 before using it. You will also need a copy of the software's installation files on a USB drive or disc.
Step 4: Make sure that BitLocker Drive Encryption is disabled
Some versions of Windows Vista contain a BitLocker Drive Encryption feature. If you are upgrading to Windows 7 over an existing Windows Vista installation, make sure that the BitLocker Drive Encryption feature is disabled.
In Windows Vista, the term disable refers to the process of temporarily suspending BitLocker protection on a drive—without decrypting the drive. Disabling BitLocker suspends the authentication mechanisms used by BitLocker and uses a clear key on the drive to enable access.
- Click Start , and then click Control Panel.
- Click Security.
- If BitLocker Drive Encryption does not display in the right-hand panel, your version of Windows Vista does not contain this feature.
- If BitLocker Drive Encryption displays in the right-hand panel, click it.
- If Off displays under the Volumes section, BitLocker is turned off.
- If On displays under the Volumes section, BitLocker is turned on and must be turned off. To turn BitLocker off, click Turn Off BitLocker, and then click Disable Protection.
- When the upgrade to Windows 7 is complete, open Windows Explorer, right-click the drive, and then click Resume Protection. This reapplies the BitLocker authentication methods and deletes the clear key.
Known issues that can occur during upgrade
Some issues might still need to be resolved before or during the upgrade. The following information is available for your reference to determine issues that might pertain to your computer configuration.
HP has worked with partners to identify issues that can occur during an upgrade to Windows 7. The following table lists known issues and possible fixes or workarounds.

In addition, Internet Explorer cannot install ActiveX controls with AVG 8.0 installed. HP Firebird computers come with AVG 8.0.

If you already upgraded to Windows 7, you may uninstall AVG 8.0 and install a version of security software that is compatible with Windows 7.

|Ignore the error message. Click OK to continue.|
|If BitLocker Drive Encryption is enabled in Windows Vista, the upgrade to Windows 7 will fail.||Turn off BitLocker Drive Encryption in Windows Vista. For instructions, see Step 4: Make sure that BitLocker Drive Encryption is disabled in the Preparing computer for Windows 7 section of this document.|
Installing Windows 7
Use one of the following set of steps to install Windows 7 onto your computer - Upgrading or Custom Install:
- With the Windows desktop opened, insert the installation DVD into the DVD drive.
- If the install window does not open automatically, double-click setup.exe from the DVD.The initial Windows 7 screen opens.
- Click Install Now.
- Select your language if presented with a language selection screen. The remaining installation screens display the chosen language.
- Select your language to install, your local time and currency format, and Keyboard or input method, and then click Next. The language chosen is the language displayed in Windows 7.
- If you are connected to the Internet, select Go online to get the latest updates for installation (recommended). Otherwise, select Do not get the latest updates for installation.
- Selecting I accept the terms if you agree to the terms in the license agreement, and click Next.
- Select Upgrade.
- A compatibility report opens. Read the results on the screen and take any required actions. Click Next when finished.
- When the Windows installation has finished copying files, the computer restarts and continues the upgrade.
- Read and respond to the screens that appear. When the product activation screen opens, enter your product key from the Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity label.This step is important. You must enter your product key to activate Windows 7. You do not need to enter your key at this time to continue. However, if you do not activate Windows within 30 days, Windows 7 will lose certain critical functions, such as Windows updates. You can find the Certificate of Authenticity label on the packaging that came with your upgrade disc. Apply the Certificate of Authenticity label to the computer for easy access in the future.
- Check the progress of the installation periodically until it completes. Do not restart or shut down your computer until the upgrade process has completed and you can use the Windows 7 Start menu.NOTE: If problems occur during the process, after Windows Vista rolls back, double-click the Windows desktop icon Windows Compatibility Report to find known software compatibility problems that might be preventing the upgrade from completing.NOTE: If the process appears to stop at "Transferring files and settings...", then allow the computer to remain on overnight (approximately 12 hours). If the upgrade does not continue past this screen, shut down the system by holding the power button for 5 seconds. Then, turn the computer on and allow the upgrade process to roll back to Windows Vista. Try again, making sure to disconnect all peripheral devices except mouse, keyboard and monitor. - Read and respond to the setup screens as they open. If you are using the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD, skip the Internet connection setup screen.Windows 7 is now installed. Use these final steps to finish setting up your computer.
- If you are using the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD, do the following:
- Do not connect to the Internet! Unplug the network cable and do not attempt to connect through wireless. This is important to avoid software conflicts that can occur with the HP Upgrade Assistant, Windows Update, and HP Update.
- Double-click the HP Upgrade Assistant icon on the desktop.
- Read and respond to the screens as they open.
- When the HP Upgrade Assistant has finished, restart the computer.
- Setup a network connection and connect to the Internet.
- See Updating Drivers and Software with Windows Update and install all Important, Recommended, and Optional updates. Restart the computer when prompted and repeat this step until Windows Update displays “Windows is up to date”
- Go to www.hp.com/support and install all the HP SoftPaqs for Windows 7.
- Open your antivirus security software and use the update feature to make sure you have the latest virus definitions. After you have updated the virus definitions, scan your system for viruses.
Custom Install (erases all files before installing)
- Insert the installation DVD into the DVD drive and shut off the computer.
- With the disc in the drive turn on your computer and click Install Now.
- Follow the instructions on screen, choosing the following options:
- Select Go online to get the latest updates… and follow the prompts.
- Make sure you select Custom (advanced).
- Enter your product key for Windows Product Activation.
- Read and respond to the screens as they appear. The entire process may take an hour or longer.
- Check the progress of the installation periodically until it completes. Do not restart or shut down your computer until the upgrade process has completed and you can use the Windows 7 Start menu.Windows 7 is now installed. Continue using these final steps to finish setting up your computer.
- Install the HP SoftPaqs that you saved to a USB drive or compact discs. Insert the USB storage device or disc and open a Window to view the files. Double-click each SoftPaq to install the updates from HP.
- See Updating Drivers and Software with Windows Update and install all Important, Recommended, and Optional updates. Restart the computer when prompted and repeat this step until it says “Windows is up to date”
- Open your antivirus security software and use the update feature to make sure you have the latest virus definitions. After you have updated the virus definitions, scan your system for viruses.
Known issues after upgrading or installing Windows 7
Some issues might need to be resolved after upgrading or installing Windows 7. Refer to the following list to determine issues that might pertain to your computer configuration.

|Graphics drivers installed by Windows 7 might not have as much functionality as a full Windows 7 driver. Games and software applications that require OpenGL do not work. Extra software to control advanced video properties are lost.||To add OpenGL support and extra features, download the latest graphics driver for your video hardware from www.hp.com/support or from the video hardware manufacturer's Web site.|

The following versions (or later) of the various TouchSmart applications are compatible with Windows 7:
HP Touch Configuration Service and HP TouchSmart Touch Optimizer are only needed in Windows Vista. You can uninstall these two software programs from Programs and Features in Windows 7 Control Panel.

Frequently asked questions
I am having trouble with an item that is not in the list of known issues. What do I do?
The lists in this document do not contain every possible issue that might be encountered. If you are having trouble with a particular software program or hardware component, try searching HP and the Internet using the terms "Windows 7" and the name of the software or hardware. You may also want to search the software or hardware manufacturer's Web site for help.

Windows 7 started upgrading, but then rolled back to Windows Vista. What do I do now?
Disconnect all connected devices other than the keyboard, mouse and monitor and try again. If it still happens, uninstall complex software such as antivirus/security and file protection management software before upgrading. Find Windows 7 compliant versions of those software programs after you have upgraded.
What do I do if the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD fails to complete updating the software and drivers on the system?
Download and install the HP Softpaqs manually from the www.hp.com/support .
What should I do if there are no drivers or applications updates (Softpaqs) posted for my system?
Check back periodically to see if drivers become available. For more information about other methods for finding software and drivers, see Obtaining Software and Drivers .
What do I do if my CD/DVD disc drive does not display in Windows after upgrading to Windows 7?
Restart your computer at least once after you upgrade. If the drives are still missing, see CD/DVD Drive is not Detected in Windows 7 .
