This document pertains to HP and Compaq desktop PCs and Workstations.
HP is committed to helping you upgrade your HP or Compaq computer to Windows 7. This document is about installing Windows 7 on HP and Compaq desktop computers. It provides instructions to help guide you through the installation process.
NOTE: If you have recently purchased a computer from HP that came with Windows Vista and are looking for the "Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP", please see the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP Web site (in English).
CAUTION: Before installing Windows 7, back up important files and make sure you have HP System Recovery discs!
Important information about installing Windows 7
There are two methods to install Windows 7 onto a computer:
  • Upgrade - installs Windows 7 over an existing Windows Vista installation. Most or all of your existing software programs, drivers, and personal files are available after upgrading. You can only perform an Upgrade if your computer has Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business or Ultimate Edition with Service Pack 1 or 2.
  • Custom Install - erases all files on the hard drive partition before installing Windows 7. Any computer that meets the minimum hardware requirements can use Custom Install to install Windows 7. Your software programs, drivers, and files are no longer available after using Custom Install. Make sure to backup important files before doing a Custom Install!

Minimum System Requirements
Your computer hardware must meet the following minimum system requirements before you can install Windows 7.
Minimum hardware requirements
  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Operating System requirements
Installing Windows 7 using Custom Install does not require an operating system on the hard drive. A custom Install removes all files from your hard drive partition and installs Windows 7. If your computer currently has Windows XP, Windows Vista Home Edition, Windows Vista Starter Edition, a prerelease version of Windows 7 (beta or RC), or any other operating system, you can use Custom Install to install Windows 7.
Upgrading to Windows 7 requires Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Enterprise, Business, or Ultimate with Service Pack 1 or 2 on the hard drive. The language type for the Windows 7 upgrade disc must be the same languages type as your version of Vista.

Using the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD
If you are participating in the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP , you may have an HP Upgrade Assistant DVD. This DVD contains most of the software and drivers needed for upgrading HP and Compaq Desktop and TouchSmart computers to Windows 7. This useful disc comes with the Windows 7 upgrade kit if you ordered the Windows 7 upgrade from HP.
To use the disc, insert it into the drive while Windows Vista is open and follow the information that appears. Later, after installing Windows 7, insert the disc again to get the latest updates.
This disc can help speed up the time it takes to find software and drivers. However, the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD is not required, nor does it contain all available updates for all HP computers.
NOTE: If you are using the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD, after successfully upgrading to Windows 7, do not connect to the Internet. Unplug the LAN cable, do not set up your wireless LAN, and do not connect to the Internet using a modem. Connect to the Internet only after you have completed Phase 3: Post Install by running the HPUA icon on the desktop and have restarted your computer. This is necessary to prevent driver and software update conflicts that can arise between the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD, Windows Update and HP Update.

Preparing the computer for Windows 7
Use the steps in this section to prepare your computer for Windows 7.
NOTE: If you are participating in the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP and have an HP Upgrade Assistant DVD , insert the DVD now and follow the instructions that appear.
Step 1: Updating the BIOS
Use the following steps to update the BIOS to avoid installation problems.
  1. Turn on the computer and immediately press the F10 key repeatedly until a BIOS Setup Utility screen opens. Some computers use F1 instead of F10.
  2. Write down the BIOS revision number from the main page (not from the bottom of the screen).
  3. Go to the HP Support Web site ( http://www.hp.com/support ), select Software and Drivers , and enter your computer model number to find software and driver updates for your computer.
  4. If a BIOS update is available that has a higher revision number, download and install it following the instructions on the Web site.

Step 2: Finding software and drivers
Get all available software and driver updates as follows:
NOTE: HP is currently in the process of testing and qualifying drivers to support the public release of Windows 7. Drivers are posted to the HP Customer Care Website as soon as the drivers have completed a testing and qualification process. These drivers are intended for use in the full release version of Windows 7.
  1. Download Windows 7 software and driver updates for your computer from HP (SoftPaqs) and store them on a USB drive or burn them to disc. For more information on downloading software from HP, see Obtaining Software and Drivers .
  2. If you are upgrading, connect to Microsoft Windows Update and install all Important and Recommended updates. Also, install all optional updates. When you have finished installing Windows updates, restart the computer and continue installing Windows Updates until it displays "Windows is up to date". If you are using a Windows Vista version that is not Service Pack 1 or better, install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). You do not have to install Windows Vista SP2.
  3. If you are upgrading, download and install the latest antivirus and antispyware definitions for your security software. After you have installed the latest definitions, use your security software to scan for malware. Fix any problems that are found.
    NOTE: If you are using AVG 8.0 Security Software, you need to upgrade to a Windows 7 compatible version to keep your current program subscription. AVG 8.0 comes with HP Firebird PCs and is not compatible with Windows 7.
  4. If you are upgrading, download and install the latest HP SoftPaqs for Windows Vista . For more information on downloading software from HP, see Obtaining Software and Drivers .
Step 3: Recovery and backing up your important files
If you have not already done so, create a set of system recovery discs. If a problem occurs during installation, you can use recovery discs to return your computer back to its original software configuration. If you cannot find your recovery discs, see Looking for Recovery Discs?
Back up your important files. You can copy all your files to CDs, DVDs or other external storage device. You may also use Microsoft Backup and Restore Center or Microsoft Windows Easy Transfer to back up your Windows files and transfer them to Windows 7. Windows Easy Transfer is compatible with XP, Vista, it comes with Windows 7 and Microsoft has provided updated versions of Windows Easy transfer for Vista and XP that makes backing up files easy.
When finished, verify that the backup was successful and that you can access your files using your current operating system.

Do not use backup software that is incompatible with Windows 7! If you want to backup your files using other software, you must first verify that it is compatible with Windows 7 before using it. You will also need a copy of the software's installation files on a USB drive or disc.
Step 4: Checking software and hardware compatibility
Go to Microsoft's Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor web page and use the Upgrade Advisor according to the instructions on the Web page.
The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor lists all known compatibility issues and recommends appropriate actions. You might be instructed to uninstall an application before upgrading to Windows 7.

Known issues that can occur during upgrade
The following table lists problems of known issues that need to be resolved prior to or during upgrade.
Issue Fix or workaround
Once upgraded to Windows 7, Windows 7 prevents AVG 8.0 (Security Suite) from opening.

In addition, Internet Explorer cannot install ActiveX controls with AVG 8.0 installed. HP Firebird PCs come with AVG 8.0.

To keep your current subscription status with AVG, upgrade to a Windows 7 compliant version from www.avg.com (in English) before upgrading to Windows 7.

If you already upgraded to Windows 7, you may uninstall AVG 8.0 and install a version of security software that is compatible with Windows 7.

or

uninstall AVG 8.0 if you plan to use other security software.
McAfee Personal Firewall Plus 4.9.0 is not compatible with Windows 7.

 Activate the service and upgrade to the Windows 7 compatible version (4.9.2+)

or

uninstall McAfee Personal Firewall Plus if you plan to use other security software.
Norton Internet Security 2008 and 2009 are not compatible with Windows 7.

 Use the Live Update feature to get all the latest updates from Symantec before upgrading.

or

uninstall Norton Internet Security 2008 or 2009 if you plan to use other security software.
NVIDIA GeForce GT220 Graphics Device update requires a firmware and driver update.

 Download the firmware and driver update from www.hp.com/support .

When upgrading an HP TouchSmart PC you might receive the following error:

Buffer overrun detected!

Program: ...ckard\TouchSmart\Media\Kernal\CLML\CLMLSvc.exe

Ignore the error message. Click OK to continue.

Installing Windows 7
Use one of the following set of steps to install Windows 7 onto your computer - Upgrading or Custom Install :
Upgrading
  1. Purchase a version of Windows 7 in the same language as the Windows Vista version you are currently using.
    To learn more about Windows 7 versions, see Microsoft's Web page Which one is right for you? (in English).
  2. With the Windows desktop opened, insert the installation DVD into the DVD drive.
  3. If the install window does not open automatically, double-click setup.exe from the DVD.
    The initial Windows 7 screen opens.
  4. Click Install Now .

  5. Select your language if presented with a language selection screen. The remaining installation screens display the chosen language.

  6. Select your language to install , your local time and currency format , and Keyboard or input method , and then click Next . The language chosen is the language displayed in Windows 7.

  7. If you are connected to the Internet, select Go online to get the latest updates for installation (recommended) . Otherwise, select Do not get the latest updates for installation .

  8. Selecting I accept the terms if you agree to the terms in the license agreement, and click Next .
  9. Select Upgrade .

  10. A compatibility report opens. Read the results on the screen and take any required actions. Click Next when finished.

  11. When the Windows installation has finished copying files, the computer restarts and continues the upgrade.
  12. Read and respond to the screens that appear. When the product activation screen opens, enter your product key from the Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity label.

    This step is important. You must enter your product key to activate Windows 7. You do not need to enter your key at this time to continue. However, if you do not activate Windows within 30 days, Windows 7 will lose certain critical functions, such as Windows updates. You can find the Certificate of Authenticity label on the packaging that came with your upgrade disc. Apply the Certificate of Authenticity label to the computer for easy access in the future.

  13. Check the progress of the installation periodically until it completes. Do not restart or shut down your computer until the upgrade process has completed and you can use the Windows 7 Start menu.
    NOTE: If problems occur during the process, after Windows Vista rolls back, double-click the Windows desktop icon Windows Compatibility Report to find known software compatibility problems that might be preventing the upgrade from completing.
    NOTE: If the process appears to stop at "Transferring files and settings...", then allow the computer to remain on overnight (approximately 12 hours). If the upgrade does not continue past this screen, shut down the system by holding the power button for 5 seconds. Then, turn the computer on and allow the upgrade process to roll back to Windows Vista. Try again, making sure to disconnect all peripheral devices except mouse, keyboard and monitor. If the problem continues, see Microsoft's support articles Upgrade stops responding (hangs) at 62% when you upgrade to Windows 7 or Continual reboot after attempting to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7 (in English)
  14. Read and respond to the setup screens as they open. If you are using the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD, skip the Internet connection setup screen.
    Windows 7 is now installed . Use these final steps to finish setting up your computer.
  15. If you are using the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD, do the following:
    1. Do not connect to the Internet! Unplug the network cable and do not attempt to connect through wireless. This is important to avoid software conflicts that can occur with the HP Upgrade Assistant, Windows Update, and HP Update.
    2. Double-click the HP Upgrade Assistant icon on the desktop.
    3. Read and respond to the screens as they open.
    4. When the HP Upgrade Assistant has finished, restart the computer.
    5. Setup a network connection and connect to the Internet.
  16. Connect to Windows Update and install all Important, Recommended, and Optional updates. Restart the computer when prompted and repeat this step until Windows Update displays “Windows is up to date”
  17. Go to www.hp.com/support and install all the HP SoftPaqs for Windows 7.
  18. Open your antivirus security software and use the update feature to make sure you have the latest virus definitions. After you have updated the virus definitions, scan your system for viruses.
Custom Install (erases all files before installing)
  1. Purchase a version of Windows 7 that meets your needs.
    To learn more about Windows 7 editions, see Microsoft's Web page Which one is right for you? (in English).
  2. Insert the installation DVD into the DVD drive and shut off the computer.
  3. With the disc in the drive turn on your computer and click Install Now .
  4. Follow the instructions on screen, choosing the following options:
    • Select Go online to get the latest updates… and follow the prompts.
    • Make sure you select Custom (advanced) .
    • Enter your product key for Windows Product Activation.
    • Read and respond to the screens as they appear. The entire process may take an hour or longer.
  5. Check the progress of the installation periodically until it completes. Do not restart or shut down your computer until the upgrade process has completed and you can use the Windows 7 Start menu.
    Windows 7 is now installed . Continue using these final steps to finish setting up your computer.
  6. Install the HP SoftPaqs that you saved to a USB drive or compact discs. Insert the USB storage device or disc and open a Window to view the files. Double-click each SoftPaq to install the updates from HP.
  7. Connect to Windows Update and install all Important, Recommended, and Optional updates. Restart the computer when prompted and repeat this step until it says “Windows is up to date”
  8. Open your antivirus security software and use the update feature to make sure you have the latest virus definitions. After you have updated the virus definitions, scan your system for viruses.

Known issues after upgrading
The following table lists known issues and possible solutions or workarounds.
Issue Fix or workaround
AMD PCI-e and USB Audio filter driver has been updated or improved for Windows 7.

Download AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Filter driver (includes USB Audio filter driver) version 1.3.1.49 or later from www.hp.com/support .
Audio Drivers for Intel, VIA, Realtek, SoundMax AC’97 Audio are not natively supported in Windows 7.

Install the Windows 7 compatible driver using Windows Update .
Audio Driver for Realtek ALC880 HD Audio provides no sound.

 Install the latest driver from www.realtek.com.tw (in English).
Audio Driver for Realtek High Definition Audio driver has been updated or improved for Windows 7.

Download Realtek High Definition Audio version 6.0.1.5898 or later from www.hp.com/support .
Audio Driver for SoundMax HD Audio driver has been updated or improved for Windows 7.

Download SoundMax HD Audio version 6.10.02.7255 or later from www.hp.com/support .
The HP Bluetooth driver has been updated or improved for Windows 7.

Download HP Bluetooth version 6.2.0.7800 or later from www.hp.com/support .
After upgrading to Windows 7, the following software cannot be installed using the application recovery tool in HP Recovery Manager:

  • Corel Paint Shop Pro X2


 Do not uninstall these software programs unless you are sure you no longer need them.
After upgrading to Windows 7, the following software cannot be installed using the application recovery tool in HP Recovery Manager:

  • CyberLink LabelPrint
  • CyberLink PowerDirector
  • CyberLink Power2Go
  • CyberLink PowerStarter


If you accidentally uninstalled these applications, you can download the softpaqs by going to www.hp.com/support .
CyberLink YouCam 1.0 is not compatible.

Apply CyberLink's patch YUC090511-01 to version 1.0 of CyberLink YouCam. After the patch is applied, update CyberLink YouCam to version 2.0 by applying update YUC090604-02 .
Devices and Printers displays internal devices that should not be displayed.

 Download and install the Devices and Printers Update Softpaq from www.hp.com/support .
Graphics drivers installed by Windows 7 might not have as much functionality as a full Windows 7 driver. Games and software applications that require OpenGL do not work. Extra software to control advanced video properties are lost.

To add OpenGL support and extra features, download the latest graphics driver for your video hardware from www.hp.com/support or from the video hardware manufacturer's Web site.
HP Hardware Diagnostic Tool might not work correctly or provide accurate information.

Install the latest version of HP Hardware Diagnostic Tool from www.hp.com/support .
HP Easy Backup 1.0.7.0 will not work in Windows 7.

Update to HP Easy Backup 1.0.8.0+ from www.hp.com/support .
HP Firebird PCs with VOODOO DNA : graphic system resets to Power Save mode.

 Right-click the NVIDIA tray icon and enable Boost Mode to take advantage of multiple Graphics processors in SLI mode.
Updating the HP Firebird PCs with VOODOO DNA graphics driver (the NVIDIA GeForce 9800S) version 8.15.11.9038 graphics through Windows Update can report a failure to install the driver after the driver is installed.

 Ignore the error and restart the computer to finish installing the driver.
The following HP Games stop working:

  • Bejeweled 2 Deluxe
  • Chuzzle Deluxe
  • Death on the Nile
  • Slingo Deluxe
  • Wedding Dash
  • Zuma Deluxe


 After upgrading, reinstall games from www.WildTangent.com (use your existing product key for games you purchased).
HP MediaSmart DVD 2.x does not uninstall in Windows 7.

Install the HP MediaSmart DVD 3.0 Update from www.hp.com/support . MediaSmart DVD version 3 is a full version installation and does not require MediaSmart DVD version 2.x.
HP MediaSmart DVD 3.0 may fail to install in Windows 7 with the following error:

Error applying transforms.

Verify that the specified transform paths are valid.

c:\hp\temp\src\1033.mst		HP is aware of this issue and is currently working on a fix.
HP MediaSmart Music/Photo/Video 2.0 software does not work correctly.

Update to HP MediaSmart Music/Photo/Video 3.0 or greater from www.hp.com/support .
HP MediaSmart TV 2.x and HP MediaSmart Internet TV 2.x software does not work with Windows 7. Use Windows Media Center’s Internet TV as the alternative.
HP System Recovery cannot start from the Windows Start menu.

 Recover using Recovery Discs or press the F11 key repeatedly at the beginning of system startup.
HP System Recovery : pressing F11 at system startup does not work.

Install the HP Recovery Fix for your model of computer from www.hp.com/support .
HP Update software has been updated or improved for Windows 7.

Download HP Update software version 5.001.000.014 or later from www.hp.com/support .
Extra function Keyboard keys do not work or do not work correctly.

Keyboard driver for All-in-One has been updated or improved for Windows 7.

Download AiO Keyboard driver version 9.4.061709 or later from www.hp.com/support .
LAN Network (NVIDIA) driver might delay system startup.

Install the latest Windows 7 compatible driver using Windows Update .
LAN Network (Realtek) drivers that are older might encounter compatibility problems.

Install the latest Windows 7 compatible driver using Windows Update .
muVee video editing software does not work on some systems until the graphics driver is updated.

Install the latest available graphic driver for your model of computer from www.hp.com/support .
NVIDIA Chipset driver has been updated or improved for Windows 7.

Download NVIDIA Chipset version 1.67 or later from www.hp.com/support .
NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 Graphics Device update requires a driver and video BIOS update.

(Not required if you already did this prior to upgrading to Win 7)

Download and install the combined driver and video BIOS update from www.hp.com/support . If you are using an HP Upgrade Assistant DVD, install this update from HP before inserting the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD.
Migrating to RAID might cause data system integrity problems.

Before using a RAID migration tool in Windows 7, install the latest compatible RAID software from www.hp.com/support .
Certain buttons on the Remote Control for Media Center might stop working.

Update to the latest HP Remote solution download from www.hp.com/support .
TouchSmart: HP SmartCenter software for IQ700 series cannot open or does not work in Windows 7.

SmartCenter software is incompatible with Windows 7.
HP TouchSmart Touch Driver only provides single touch support under Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Download the enhanced Multi-Touch Driver+ from www.hp.com/support to enable limited 2-touch support with Windows 7.
TouchSmart 2.0 software for IQ500 and IQ800 Series PCs does not work correctly. Update to TouchSmart 3.0 or greater by downloading all of the available Software Solution updates from www.hp.com/support . Install them in the order that follows.

The following versions (or later) of the various TouchSmart applications are compatible with Windows 7:
  • HP TouchSmart Application Update 3.0.32.0 (must be installed first!)
  • HP TouchSmart Webcam 3.0.1.1903
  • HP TouchSmart Calendar 3.0.3476.32189

The driver controlling the TouchSmart On-Screen Display volume controls might cause a blue screen error under certain situations.

Update the ACPI gen2 Driver 7100.0.0.2 from www.hp.com/support .
The following TV Tuners may show a black screen while using Live TV:

AVerMedia A327 Mini-Card Hybrid Analog/ATSC

NXP TV 7138 DMB-TH/PAL Hybrid Device

Pegatron U012MH Hybrid Capture Device

HP is working with vendors and will post downloadable solutions as soon as they are ready.
TV Tuner: AverMedia driver has been updated or improved for Windows 7.

Install the latest Windows 7 compatible driver using Windows Update .
TV Tuner: AverMedia for TouchSmart PCs has been updated or improved for Windows 7.

Install the latest Windows 7 compatible driver using Windows Update .
TV Tuner: Hauppauge driver has been updated or improved for Windows 7.

Install the latest Windows 7 compatible driver using Windows Update .
TV Tuner: Pixela (Japan Only) driver and StationTV application has been updated or improved for Windows 7.

Download Pixela TV Tuner driver version 1.26.48 and StationTV application update from www.hp.com/support .
Windows applications: Photo Gallery , Windows Mail , and Windows Movie Maker do not come with Windows 7.

What is the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP and how do I participate?
The Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP applies to people who have purchased qualifying HP and Compaq PCs that came with Windows Vista. For those people that qualify for the program, they can receive an upgrade kit containing a Windows 7 upgrade disc from Microsoft, an HP Upgrade assistant disc, and instructions.

You may also want to search the software or hardware manufacturer's Web site for help.

Windows 7 started upgrading, but then rolled back to Windows Vista. What do I do now?
Disconnect all connected devices other than the keyboard, mouse and monitor and try again. If it still happens, uninstall complex software such as antivirus/security and file protection management software before upgrading. Find Windows 7 compliant versions of those software programs after you have upgraded.

What do I do if the HP Upgrade Assistant DVD fails to complete updating the software and drivers on the system?
Download and install the HP Softpaqs manually from the www.hp.com/support .

What should I do if there are no drivers or applications updates (Softpaqs) posted for my system?
