Issue
When you install the HP software, the error message 'Fatal error during installation.
The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2753. Contact your support personnel
' displays on a Windows XP or Windows Vista computer.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.
Solution one: Re-register the MSIexec service
- Click Start (
), and then click Run
. The Run
window opens. - In the Run window, type msiexec /unregister , and then click OK . The Run window closes.
- Click Start (
), and then click Run
. The Run
window opens. - In the Run window, type Msiexec / reregister , and then click OK .The Run window closes.
- Try the installation again.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Give all users full permissions to the Program Files folder

NOTE:Make sure that you have admin rights to the computer.
- Click Start (
), right-click My Computer
, and then click Explore
. - If necessary, click the plus sign (+ ) next to C: (or your hard drive) to expand the list of options.
- Right-click Program Files , and then click Properties . The Program Files Properties window opens.
- In the Attributes section, click to clear the Read-only check box. If the box is already cleared, close the Properties dialog box and the Explorer window.
- Click Apply , select Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files , and then click OK .
- Try the installation again.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Turn off services, delete HP files, and then reinstall the software
Follow these steps to turn off HP services, delete some HP files, and then reinstall the software.
Step one: Turn off services
- Click Start (
), and then click Run
. The Run
window opens. - In the Run window, type services.msc , and then click OK . The Computer Management window opens.
- Click the plus (+) sign next to Services and Applications , if necessary, so that Services is visible.
- Double-click Services so that Services is visible in the right pane.
NOTE:You might have to expand the window to see all of the services. - In the list of services, click PML Driver (or some variation of that driver name). The PML Driver Properties window opens.
- Change the Start-up Type entry to Disabled , click Apply , and then click OK .
- Find the entry for Net Driver HPZ12 , and then double-click it. The Net Driver HPZ12 Properties window opens.
- Change the Start-up Type entry to Disabled , click Apply , and then click OK .
Step two: Remove HP files
- Right-click Start (
), and then click Explore
. Windows Explorer opens. - If necessary, click the plus sign (+ ) next to C: (or your hard drive) to expand the list of options.
- Click the plus sign (+ ) next to Windows .
- Click the plus sign (+ ) next to system32 .
- Under system32 , find the following files:
- HPZipm12.dll
- HPZinw12.dll
- Right-click each file, and then click Delete .
Step three: Uninstall the software
If you still have the HP software CD that came with your product, you can insert the CD in the CD drive, and then follow the on-screen instructions to remove the software. If you do not have the CD, follow these directions to remove the software.

CAUTION:These steps remove all the HP product software, including the software drivers and HP software updates. These steps might also remove some of the other HP printing and imaging software.
- Unplug the USB cable from the rear of the product.
- On the Windows taskbar, click Start (
), and then click Control Panel
. The Control Panel
opens. - Click Add/Remove Programs .
- Click the HP product, and then click Uninstall .
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
CAUTION:If the removal process asks you to remove shared files, click No . Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the shared files. - Restart the computer.
Step four: Reinstall the HP software
You can use the software CD that shipped with your product to install, but for the most current software HP recommends downloading and installing the software from the HP Web site.
If you have already downloaded the software, you do not have to download it again. Otherwise, follow these instructions to download and install the software.
- Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
- Turn the product on.
- Browse to the Get Software and Drivers page: Get Software and Drivers
- Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
- Type your product number in the window.
- Click Next . If necessary click your model in a list of similar products.
- Click Software and Driver Downloads .
- Click the drop-down arrow (
), and then click your operating system. - Continue to the next step.
- Click the drop-down arrow (
), and then click your operating system. - Click Next .
- Continue to the next step.
- Click the Plus sign (
) next to Driver
, and then click the driver that you want to download. - Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions (
) for complete download instructions. - Click Download . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
- Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
- Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
Solution four: Run a level 3 uninstall, and then reinstall the HP software
Follow these steps to perform a level 3 uninstall, which is a more robust software removal than the preceding steps.
Step one: Run a level 3 uninstall
- Insert the installation CD in the computer.
- Click Cancel to close the autorun screen.
- Click Start (
), and then click Run
. - Click Browse .
- Find the drive that contains the software CD, and then double-click the drive.
- Click the Util folder, and then double-click the CCC folder.
- Double-click the file Uninstall_L3.bat .
- Click OK to run the level 3 uninstall.
- Restart the computer after the software removal process finishes.

Solution five: Remove the registry keys
Follow these instructions to create a backup of the Windows Registry and modify the Windows Registry.
Step one: Back up the Windows Registry
Follow these instructions to save a backup of the Windows Registry to the desktop, so you can restore the registry if necessary.

WARNING:Changing the registry incorrectly might cause the computer to stop working. Perform these steps exactly as directed. Back up the registry before making any changes.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the product.
- Click Start (
), and then click Run
. - In the Open box, type regedit , and then click OK . The Registry Editor window opens.
- Click File , and then click Export .
- In the Save in menu, click Desktop .
- In the File Name box, type HPBackup .
- In the Save as type menu, click Registration Files .
- In the Export Range menu, click All .
- Click Save .
Step two: Remove the registry keys
- Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE .
- Click the plus sign (+) next to SOFTWARE .
- Click the plus sign (+) next to Hewlett-Packard .
- Right-click all keys for the product in use and any prior printers that you no longer use, and then click Delete .
Step three: Reinstall the HP software
You can use the software CD that shipped with your product to install, but for the most current software HP recommends downloading and installing the software from the HP Web site.
If you have already downloaded the software, you do not have to download it again. Otherwise, follow these instructions to download and install the software.

Solution three: Turn off services, delete HP files, and then reinstall the software
Follow these steps to turn off HP services, delete some HP files, and then reinstall the software.
Step one: Turn off services
- Click the Windows icon (
), and then type services.msc
in the Start Search
box. The Computer Management
window opens. - Click the arrow (
) next to Services and Applications
, if necessary, so that Services
is visible. - Double-click Services so that Services is visible in the right pane.
NOTE:You might have to expand the window to see all of the services. - In the list of services, click PML Driver (or some variation of that driver name). The PML Driver Properties window opens.
- Change the Start-up Type entry to Disabled , click Apply , and then click OK .
- Find the entry for Net Driver HPZ12 , and then double-click it. The Net Driver HPZ12 Properties window opens.
- Change the Start-up Type entry to Disabled , click Apply , and then click OK .
Step two: Remove HP files
- Right-click the Windows icon (
), and then click Explore All Users
. Windows Explorer opens. - If necessary, click the arrow (
) next to C:
(or your hard drive) to expand the list of options. - Click the arrow (
) next to Windows
. - Click the arrow (
) next to system32
. - Under system32 , find the following files:
- HPZipm12.dll
- HPZinw12.dll
- Right-click each file, and then click Delete .
