'Paper Mismatch,' or 'Paper Size Mismatch' Error Message Displays When Printing

This document is for all HP printers.
When printing photos, documents, or envelopes, the following error message displays on the printer control panel or on the computer:
'Paper Mismatch' or 'Paper Size Mismatch'
Follow the steps provided for either Windows or Mac to troubleshoot this error message.
Select one of the following options depending on your type of print job.
The 'Paper Mismatch' or 'Paper Size Mismatch' error message displays to make sure that ink is not wasted on the wrong paper type. For example, the print job might be for a 4 x 6 inch (101.6 x 152.4 mm) photo, but there is letter-size paper loaded in the printer.
Follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve a paper mismatch error when printing documents or photos.

Solution one: Resume the print job

Ignore the error and continue printing. The print job might still be acceptable even if the paper size and paper type settings are not an exact match.
  1. Press OK on the control panel to clear the error message.
  2. Make sure that the paper loaded in the main tray is the correct size of paper.
  3. Try the print job again.

Solution two: Adjust the print settings

Follow these steps to change the print settings to match the current print job. If the print settings do not match the paper that is loaded in the printer, the printer reports a 'Paper Mismatch' error.
  1. Check the paper that is loaded in the main tray. Make sure the paper is the correct size that you want to print on.
  2. In the program you want to print from, click File , and then click Print .
  3. Make sure that your printer is in the Name or Printers drop-down list box, and then click Properties or Printer Properties .
  4. Click the Features or Paper/Quality tab.
  5. Select a paper size from the Paper Size drop-down list. For example, if you want to print on 8.5 x 11 (letter) sized paper, select Letter .
  6. In the Paper Type or Type is drop-down list, click More , click the desired paper type, and then click OK .
  7. In the Paper Source drop-down list, select the paper source, for example the Main tray .
  8. Change any other settings, and then click OK to close the Properties window.

Solution three: Obtain and install the latest product firmware update

Follow these steps to obtain the most current firmware for your product
  1. If prompted, enter your printer model number, click Next , and then click Drivers .
  2. On the Drivers & Downloads page, select your operating system, and then click Next .
  3. Scroll down the page, and then click Firmware .
  4. Click Download next to the firmware update, and then follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the firmware.
Mismatch errors occur because the printer measures the width of the envelope before printing. If the setting in the printer driver does not match the envelope actually loaded in the printer, the printer reports a 'Paper Mismatch' error.
Follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve a paper mismatch error when printing envelopes.

Solution one: Resume the print job

Ignore the error and continue printing. The print job might still be acceptable even if the paper size and paper type settings are not an exact match.
  1. Press OK on the control panel to clear the error message.
  2. Make sure that the paper loaded in the main tray is the correct size of paper.
  3. Try the print job again.

Solution two: Adjust the print and envelope settings

  1. In the program you want to print from, click File , and then click Print .
  2. Make sure that your printer is in the Name drop-down list, and then click Properties .
  3. In the Properties window, click the Features or Paper/Quality tab.
  4. In the Paper Sizes drop-down list, select an envelope size.
  5. In the Media drop-down list, select the desired paper type, and then click OK .
  6. Select the paper source from the Paper Source drop-down list.
  7. Change any other settings, and then click OK to close the Properties window.

Solution three: Obtain and install the latest product firmware update

Follow these steps to obtain the most current firmware for your product
  1. If prompted, enter your printer model number, click Next , and then click Drivers .
  2. On the Drivers & Downloads page, select your operating system, and then click Next .
  3. Scroll down the page, and then click Firmware .
  4. Click Download next to the firmware update, and then follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the firmware.
Some HP printers allow you to print on custom-sized paper in Windows. Go to Create Custom Paper Sizes in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Mac OS X to find out more.

Solution two: Adjust the print settings

Follow these steps to change the print settings to match the current print job. If the print settings do not match the paper that is loaded in the printer, the printer reports a 'Paper Mismatch' error.
Step 1: Select your printer
  1. In the program from which you want to print, click File , and then click Print .
  2. Select your printer from the Printer drop-down list.
Step 2: Change the print settings
  1. Type the number of copies to print in the Copies text box.
  2. If you want to print multiple copies, select the Collated check box to print the pages of each copy in order.
  3. Select the pages of the print job that you want to print. To print all pages, select All . To print a specific range of pages only, type the page number that begins the page range in the From text box. Then, type the page number that ends the page range in the To text box.
  4. Select the size and type of paper loaded in the printer from the Paper Size drop-down list.
  5. Select the orientation for your print job. To print in portrait orientation, click the icon on the left. To print in landscape orientation, click the icon on the right.
Step 3: Change the paper type and quality settings
  1. In the software program that you are trying to print from, click File , and then click Print .
  2. Select the Paper Type/Quality or Media & Quality menu.
  3. Review the following options, and then make any necessary changes.
    • Paper type or Media type : If one of the options matches your paper type exactly, select that option.
    • Quality : If you are dissatisfied with the quality of your printouts, increase the print quality. To print more quickly, decrease the print quality.
  4. In the Paper Type/Quality or Media & Quality menu, click Color Options , if it is available.
    • If you want color printouts, make sure that ColorSmart/sRGB is selected.
    • If the option is not available, continue to the next step.
  5. Click Print to try the print job again.
  6. Optional : To save these settings for future print jobs, follow these steps.
    1. In the Presets menu, click Save As , name the new preset, and then click OK .
    2. If you have multiple printers installed, open System Preferences ( ) on the Dock, and then click Print & Scan .
    3. Set the Default Printer to Last Printer Used .

Step 1: Select your printer
  1. In the program from which you want to print, click File , and then click Print .
  2. Select your printer from the Printer drop-down list.
Step 2: Change the print settings
  1. Type the number of copies to print in the Copies text box.
  2. Select the appropriate envelope size from the Paper Size menu.
  3. Select the Paper Type/Quality or Media & Quality menu.
  4. Verify that the Paper Type is set to Plain paper .
  5. Select any other print settings that you want, and then click Print .

Solution three: Obtain and install the latest product firmware update

Follow these steps to obtain the most current firmware for your product
  1. If prompted, enter your printer model number, click Next , and then click Drivers .
  2. On the Drivers & Downloads page, select your operating system, and then click Next .
  3. Scroll down the page, and then click Firmware .
  4. Click Download next to the firmware update, and then follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the firmware.
Follow these steps to print to a paper size that is different from the original document on Mac OS X.
  1. Load the desired paper size.
  2. On the Mac OS X, in the software used for the document, click File and then click Page Setup .
  3. From the drop-down list, select the HP product.
  4. Select the paper size, and then click OK . If the desired paper size is not listed, create a custom paper size.
    NOTE:Make sure to not name any new custom paper sizes with the same name as any built-in paper sizes. For example, if a custom paper size was named A4 , then the built-in paper size A4 would no longer be available as a choice. Select a different name for the custom size paper.
    To create a custom paper size, click Manage Custom Sizes in the Paper Size drop-down menu.
    Click New and type a name for the size in the Paper Size Name box.
    In the Width and Height boxes, type the dimensions and set the margins, if desired.
    Click Done or OK , and then click Save .
    Click File and then click Page Setup .
    Select the new custom paper size and then click OK .
  5. Click File and then click Print .
  6. Select the Paper Handling panel.
  7. Under Destination Paper Size, click the Scale to fit paper size tab, and then select the customized paper size.
  8. Change any other print settings, and then click OK or Print .
