Support details

The latest HP printer drivers, scan software, fax drivers (where applicable) and utility are included in Mac OS X 10.6. You do not need to reinstall or download any HP software for full print, scan, fax, and utility functionality. The supported products are listed at the end of this document.
HP All-in-One software is included in the Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard retail DVD, and also available via Apple Software Updates, and with new Mac computers shipping with Snow Leopard.
Important: Please do not reinstall software from original HP Photosmart, Officejet, Deskjet CDs, or HP web downloads from previous Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4, or 10.5. Older software is not compatible with Snow Leopard. The latest Snow Leopard compatible software is included in Mac OS X 10.6, and you will experience the best performance and functionality if you use the latest HP software.
There are some important updates with the HP software included in Mac OS X 10.6:
  • Printing: Full print functionality is supported with new HP print drivers included in Snow Leopard. Instructions follow.
  • Scanning: The Scanning interface is now built into Snow Leopard and supported with the Apple Image Capture application. Instructions follow.
NOTE: HP Scan Pro software (from Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5) is not supported in Snow Leopard. The HP icon for HP Device Manager still in the dock after upgrade is not functional and should be removed.
NOTE: Scan support from pushing the Scan button on the printer is not supported with this version of the scan interface built into Snow Leopard. Scan functionality is supported by scanning directly from the computer.
  • HP Utility: HP Utility is included in Snow Leopard.
  • Faxing: HP fax drivers are included in Snow Leopard for supported devices.
Upgrading to Mac OS X 10.6 from Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5 – Configuring your HP device
If you are upgrading your Mac OS using the Snow Leopard DVD, the install process should automatically recreate your previous HP printer queues using the latest HP drivers included in Snow Leopard.
NOTE: If you are using or sharing a printer that is connected directly to an Apple Airport with a USB or Ethernet cable, these printer queues will NOT be recreated. A new printer queue can be easily and quickly created using the steps below.
Configuring your HP printer on a new Macintosh with Snow Leopard already installed, or after performing a clean install from the Snow Leopard DVD
For both USB and network setup, please follow the same steps listed below. For some HP devices, it may be important to make sure the Mac is connected to the Internet in order to access Apple Software Updates for the latest HP software.
Next Steps: Using your HP device in Mac OS X 10.6
Printing
Method one: Printing from a USB printer
  1. Make sure your printer is turned on and connected.
  2. Open a document to print, and then choose File > Print .
NOTE: You can also go directly to System Preferences > Print & Fax .
  3. From the Printer pop-up menu, choose your printer.
If you do not see your printer listed, choose Add Printer , and then click More Printers .
  4. In the Name column, select your printer, and then click Add .
Method two: Printing from a network printer
You can connect to HP printers on your local network (wireless and Ethernet) using Bonjour and IP, as well as shared printers connected to an Apple Airport base station.
NOTE: Apple does not support AppleTalk in Mac OS X 10.6.
  1. Choose File > Print .
  2. From the Printer pop-up menu, choose your printer.
Your printer may also be listed in the Nearby Printers submenu.
A dialog appears, listing any Bonjour printers on your local network. It may take a minute or two for your printer to appear.
  3. If your printer does not appear, choose Add Printer from the Printer pop-up menu. Printers that are turned on and connected to the local network (wireless and Ethernet) should appear as Bonjour devices.
  4. Select your device from the list and click Add to create the HP printer queue for your HP Photosmart, Officejet, or Deskjet All-in-One printer.
Important: On larger networks, outside the Bonjour link-local network, your printer may not show up in the list. In this case, you can connect to your printer using its IP address. An IP printer is a network printer that uses TCP/IP protocol (such as HP Jetdirect, LPD/LPR, IPP) to communicate with your printer. You will need to know the printer IP address or DNS name (available from the printer’s front panel or Network Configuration Page).
  5. In the toolbar, click IP .
  6. From the Protocol pull-down menu, choose HP Jetdirect – Socket .
This is the preferred protocol to connect to HP printers. For best performance please do not use IPP or LPD.
  7. Enter your printer network information IP address or DNS name.
The system should automatically select the appropriate HP print driver in the Print Using pull-down menu.
  8. Click Add to create the HP printer queue for your HP Photosmart, Officejet, or Deskjet All-in-One printer.
Your computer can usually detect whether a printer has special accessories installed, such as additional paper trays or a duplex unit. If it cannot, a dialog appears that lets you specify them. To enable full functionality, make sure the settings in that dialog accurately reflect the installed options.
Scanning with the software included in Mac OS X 10.6
New with Snow Leopard, the Scanning interface to these HP Inkjet All-in-One devices is now built into Snow Leopard and supported with the Apple Image Capture application. There are three ways to perform scanning from your HP All-in-One:
  • Preview program
  • Image Capture program
  • System Preferences > Print & Fax
Important: After you open the scan interface, it is important to select the correct mode (Flatbed or Document Feeder ) for the source of the scan image. Your HP All-in-One may have an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) or a flatbed lid. By default, Document Feeder will be the automatically selected Mode for any devices that have an ADF. You must select Flatbed if you want to scan directly from the glass flatbed and not the Document Feeder.

    The Printer Browser window appears.
  5. Click the Scan icon at top right of the toolbar to launch scanning.

HP Fax drivers are not automatically added by Mac OS X 10.6. HP Fax drivers from previous Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5 are not compatible with new Mac OS X 10.6.
To add a Fax driver queue:
