This document applies to HP and Compaq computers with Windows 7.
The Windows 7 Sync Center tool assists in keeping two or more versions of the same file, stored on the computer and in a network location, identical (synchronized) to the other. For example, if there is an addition or deletion, or any change in a file in one location, once the files are synched with Sync Center, the files match each other.
Each time you sync files between two locations, Sync Center compares the files for changes or discrepancies. If the files differ, Sync Center copies the newer version, overwriting the older file. If the files are identical, Sync Center does nothing. If a file is deleted in one location, Sync Center deletes it in the other.
Setting up a network folder to work with Sync Center
Before you can use Sync Center with a network folder, you must set the folder to be available offline. Follow these steps to set up a network folder:
- Click Start , then click Computer .
- Browse to the network folder or drive.
- Right-click the name of the network folder or drive, then click Always available offline .

- To open Sync Center and check the progress, click Start , All Programs , Accessories , and then click Sync Center .

Using Sync Center
- To open Sync Center and check the progress, click Start , All Programs , Accessories , and then click Sync Center .Sync CenterSync CenterSync Center displays the current sync partnerships. A sync partnership describes the set of rules that tells Sync Center which files and folders to sync for each partnership, and when to sync them.
- Select the folder to sync, and then click Sync to sync files now.To set up a sync to run on a regular basis, select the folder to sync, and then click Schedule and proceed to the next section.Sync or ScheduleSync or Schedule
Setting up a sync schedule
Use these steps to set up a sync to run on a regular basis or every time an event occurs, such as logging on to your computer:
- Open Sync Center and click View sync partnerships .
- Select the folder to sync, and then click Schedule .
- Click Next .
- Select one of the following two options to schedule the sync:At a scheduled time - Set up the sync to run at a set time on a regular basis.When an event occurs - Set up the sync to run when an event occurs. These events include logging on to your computer, the computer is idle, or the computer is locked or unlocked.Schedule a syncSchedule a sync
- Follow the instructions to schedule the sync.
Troubleshooting sync problems
The following are solutions to sync problems.
A sync conflict occurs when the file versions for a sync'ed file cannot be resolved by Windows. For instance, if a file has been changed in both locations since the last sync, the Sync Center gives you the opportunity to decide which file to use as the most updated.
NOTE:To prevent most sync conflicts where the files have changed in both locations since the last sync, synchronize your files before you start working on them in the second location.
- Once a sync occurs, if there is a sync conflict, a notification onscreen appears.
- In the left pane, click View sync conflicts .
- Select the appropriate conflict (or conflicts).
- Click Resolve and follow the instructions to resolve the conflict.
A sync error occurs when there is a problem with a device, the computer, or a folder you are trying to sync. For example, a sync error occurs when a device is not turned on when you are trying to sync with it, or a wireless connection is lost. A sync error normally prevents a sync from finishing.
- Once you start a sync, if the Sync Center detects an error, a conflict icon appears with a notification of a sync error.
- Click View sync results in the left pane.
- View the sync results for a report on why the sync could not complete.
- Fix the error, and then try the sync again.
Sync warnings do not prevent syncs from completing and do not need to be addressed immediately. Review the sync warnings occasionally to make sure there are not problems that would affect future syncs.
- After a sync is completed, click the View sync results screen in the left pane.
- Check for warnings, and fix any problems.
File deleted during sync
If a file was deleted during the sync, the Sync Center detected that same file was deleted from one of the sync locations, so it deleted it from the other. This is the only time Sync Center deletes a file. To avoid this from happening, either do not delete a file from one location, or do not sync with a folder where you delete files.
Some files did not sync
Some sync conflicts and sync errors prevent syncs from completing. To understand why certain files did not sync:
- Click View sync conflicts and view any conflicts and resolve them.
- Click View sync results to view sync errors and resolve them.
