PrintThis document pertains to HP Notebook PCs being upgraded from Windows Vista or Windows XP to Windows 7.
HP offered Windows 7 upgrades for qualifying HP and Compaq notebook computers purchased between June 26, 2009 and January 31, 2010. This program expired on March 1, 2010.
Options for upgrading to Windows 7
Depending on the model and current operating system of your HP notebook PC, you have the following upgrade options:

of Windows 7. If you have already received the upgrade kit from HP see Upgrading to Windows 7 Using the HP Upgrade Assistant for instructions. This program expired on March 1, 2010. If your notebook PC is not eligible for the upgrade program then you must purchase an upgrade or full retail version of Windows 7 from Microsoft or other retailer. | My Vista notebook is listed in the table of supported notebooks but does not have Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business or Ultimate Edition installed. | Your notebook does not meet the minimum requirements to upgrade to Windows 7 but does meet the requirements for a custom installation . HP notebook series supported with Windows 7
The following series HP notebook PCs are supported with Windows 7. HP has tested and developed software and drivers to support Windows 7 for these series. To get the latest drivers when they are available, return to the
Software and Driver Download page
for your model frequently.
NOTE:Notebook PCs that are not listed in the following table will not
be supported by HP with Windows 7. HP does not plan to release Windows 7 drivers or software for notebook models that are not listed in the following table.Not all of the supported models listed in the table were eligible for the free Windows 7 upgrade from HP. This program expired on March 1, 2010 and HP will no longer accept orders for the free upgrade.

NOTE:The HP Pavilion series models shown in this chart with a dash after the dv number (example: Pavilion dv5-1001), are different than the Pavilion dv series with a four digit number and no dash (example: Pavilion dv5001). As a specific example; HP Pavilion dv5-1001au Entertainment Notebook PC can be upgraded to Windows 7 and drivers are available. However, HP Pavilion dv5001au Notebook PC is supported for Windows Vista, and no drivers are provided for an unsupported upgrade to Windows 7.
Important information about installing Windows 7
There are two methods to install Windows 7 onto a computer:
- Upgrade - installs Windows 7 over an existing Windows Vista installation. Most or all of your existing software programs, drivers, and personal files are available after upgrading. You can only perform an Upgrade if your computer has Windows Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate Edition with Service Pack 1 or 2.
- Custom Install - erases all files on the hard drive partition before installing Windows 7. Any computer that meets the minimum hardware requirements can use Custom Install to install Windows 7. Your software programs, drivers, and files are no longer available after using Custom Install. Make sure to backup important files before doing a Custom Install!
Software and driver support for HP notebooks
HP is currently testing and qualifying software and drivers to support the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system for the series listed in the following table. For certain models and/or drivers, this quality assurance process may not be completed before Windows 7 is released by Microsoft on October 22, 2009.
Once a driver or software is qualified for release, HP will add the downloadable version to the

for your specific model. To get the latest drivers when they are available, return to the
Software and Driver Download page
for your model frequently.
NOTE:HP support technicians do not have information about the testing, release schedule or availability of software and drivers for Windows 7.
Minimum System Requirements
Your computer hardware must meet the following minimum system requirements before you can install Windows 7.
Minimum hardware requirements
- 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
- 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
- 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
- DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Operating System requirements
Installing Windows 7 using Custom Install
does not require an operating system on the hard drive. A custom Install removes all files from your hard drive partition and installs Windows 7. If your computer currently has Windows XP, Windows Vista Home Edition, Windows Vista Starter Edition, a prerelease version of Windows 7 (beta or RC), or any other operating system, you can use Custom Install to install Windows 7.
Upgrading
to Windows 7 requires Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business or Ultimate with Service Pack 1 or 2 on the hard drive and the Windows 7 upgrade disc must be the same language used by Vista.
