CD or DVD Cannot Burn Discs (Windows 7)
This document pertains to HP and Compaq PCs using Windows 7.
If you cannot burn music or data to blank CDs or DVDs, follow the steps in this document to resolve the problem.
NOTE:This document assumes that your drive is recognized by Windows and is capable of reading discs. If your disc burning software displays the message "No burner is currently available" (or similar), or the drive cannot play CDs and DVDs, then this document will not solve the problem. Instead, refer to CD/DVD Drive is not Detected (Windows 7) .
Step 1: Testing different types of disc for computers running Windows 7 that cannot burn discs
When a computer running Windows 7 is unable to burn discs, the problem might be the computer's compatibility with the disc type. The type of disc you use for burning must be compatible with the type of disc drive in your computer. That is, you cannot burn a DVD-R disc in a drive that does not support DVD-R technology.
For testing purposes, try a few different brands of CD-R (compact disc recordable). CD-R discs are supported by all recordable disc drives.
Why try another disc? There are many different brands and types of writable discs with unique burning properties - some perform better than others. Your disc drive can adjust various properties of the laser and disc rotation to match the properties of the disc, but it may not be able to find a match with some batches of recordable media.
If the drive cannot burn discs of any brand, try decreasing the disc burning speed.
Step 2: Decreasing the disc burning speed on computers running Windows 7 that cannot burn discs
Burn the disc using a slower burn speed. When burn speed is reduced it takes longer to complete the disc, but the writing process is more likely to finish successfully and a completed disc has more reliable playback in other devices.
Step 3: Removing the drive from Device Manager on computers running Windows 7 that cannot burn discs
If your computer canno burn discs, try removing the disc drive from Device Manager. Follow these steps to remove the drive from Device Manager:
- Double-click DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Right-click the drive name and select Uninstall.If a confirmation window opens, click OK. The drive name should be removed from the list (and the DVD/CD-ROM drives category is removed if there is only one drive). Do not restart the computer and do not refresh the hardware list.
- Close Device Manager.You must clear the registry filters before attempting to burn another disc.
Step 4: Clearing the registry filters on computers running Windows 7 that cannot burn discs
If your computer canno burn discs, clear the registry filters of the computer. To clear the upper and lower registry filters, use the following steps:
- Use the Microsoft Fix it Solution from Fix problems with CD or DVD drives that can’t read or write media (in English).If you cannot use the Microsoft Fix it Solution, continue using these steps to clear the upper and lower registry filters manually.
- Remove all CD writing software (Cyberlink Power2Go) using the Programs and Features window in Control Panel. For more help, see Uninstalling Software in Windows 7 .NOTE:Make sure that you can reinstall your disc burning software before you uninstall it.
- Unplug all non-essential external plug and play devices, especially cameras.
- If you are prompted for an Administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
- The Registry Editor opens.
- Select Computer in the main window.
- Click File, Export, type a filename that is easy for you to remember, and then click Save.A copy of the registry has saved for back-up purposes to the Documents folder. If problems occur after using these steps, browse to the file and double-click it to restore the registry.
- Click the arrow next to the following items in the list:
- Select 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318. Make sure you have selected this exact key name.
- If a LowerFilters value is listed on the right side of the registry editor window, select the LowerFilters value and press the Delete key. Confirm the deletion by clicking Yes.
- If an UpperFilters value is also listed, select UpperFilters in the right window and press the Delete key.Confirm the deletion by clicking Yes.
- Delete all other UpperFilters and LowerFilters values within the 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 key if any exist.
- Close the registry editor, restart the computer, and wait until Windows configures the necessary drivers for new hardware.
- After all CD writing software has been removed, restart the computer and reinstall the CD writing software. If you are using CD burning software that came with the computer, you can reinstall the software using HP Application Recovery. - Try creating a disc again. If you still cannot create a disc that can be read in another drive, use System Restore.
Step 5: Using System Restore on computers running Windows 7 that cannot burn discs
If the computer cannot write to the disc, use System Restore to go back to a time when the drive was recognized by Windows. If you do not know how to restore Windows, use the Support document Using Microsoft System Restore in Windows 7 .
When done, use the CD or DVD drive again to see if it works. If it works, you are done. If it does not, use HP System Recovery.
Step 6: Using HP System Recovery on computers running Windows 7 that cannot burn discs
If the computer cannot write to the disc, back up your important files and use HP system recovery to the computer.
When done, use the CD or DVD drive again to see if it can burn a disc. If not, Use HP Hardware Diagnostic software to test the CD/DVD drive.
Step 7: Using HP Hardware Diagnostic software to test the drive on computers running Windows 7 that cannot burn discs
The laser alignment and the hardware that supports it must retain a high degree of accuracy. As the recordable disc drive in your computer ages it is affected by vibration, dust, mechanical wear and other factors. Test the drive to see if it has failed using hardware diagnostic software from HP. On most PCs, you can access HP diagnostics by opening HP Support Assistant from the desktop icon or from the start menu, select the Troubleshoot pillar, click the Storage Devices button, and select the Optical Drives tab.
If the drive fails the test, replace the drive or have the computer serviced.
