The Installation CD Does Not Start Automatically in Windows 7

Issue

The software installation does not start automatically when the product CD is inserted in the CD drive of the computer running Windows 7.

Solution

Complete the steps below to resolve the problem. If one of the steps resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

Step one: Make sure the Autoplay check box is checked

  1. Insert the HP software CD in the CD drive.
  2. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ), type autoplay in the Search Programs and Files box, and then press Enter . The Autoplay window opens.
  3. Under Choose what happens when you insert each type of media or device , make sure that the Use AutoPlay for all media and devices check box is selected. Click the check box if the option is not checked.

  4. Remove the product CD from the CD drive.
  5. Insert the product software CD in the CD drive.
  6. If the User Account Control window opens, click Continue .
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions.
If you complete all of the steps and are still experiencing a problem, proceed to the next step.

Step two: Manually install the software

  1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ), icon.
  2. Click Computer .
  3. Double-click the CD drive for the drive where the printer software CD is located. The installation starts automatically.
  4. If the User Account Control window displays at any time during the installation, click Continue .
If you complete all of the steps and are still experiencing a problem, proceed to the next step.

Step three: Manually install the software from 'Computer'

  1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ).
  2. Click Computer .
  3. Right-click the CD drive and then click Open in a new window .
  4. Double-click the setup.exe file.
    NOTE:If nothing displays in the right pane of the Explore window, or if nothing happens when you double-click setup.exe , the CD might be damaged or unusable. Skip to the 'Order a replacement printer software CD' step in this document.
  5. If the User Account Control window displays during the installation, click Continue .
If you complete all of the steps and are still experiencing a problem, proceed to the next step.

Step four: Check and clean the product CD

  1. Remove the software CD from the CD drive.
  2. Insert another CD, such as a music or a video CD, to verify that the CD drive is working correctly.
  3. If the music or video CD does not play, then there is an issue with the CD drive. Contact the CD drive manufacturer.
  4. If the music or video CD does play, clean the software CD using a soft cloth dampened in distilled water.
  5. Dry the CD with a lint-free cloth.
  6. Insert the software CD in the CD drive.
  7. If the User Account Control window displays at any time during the installation, click Continue .
  8. If the installation does not start automatically, try inserting the software CD in another CD drive on the computer, if available.
If you complete all of the steps and are still experiencing a problem, proceed to the next step.

Step five: Copy the contents of the printer software CD to the hard drive and install

  1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ).
  2. Click Computer .
  3. Double-click C: . C: is the hard drive letter location.
  4. Right-click the Windows desktop, click New , click Folder , type HP Software , and then press Enter .
  5. On the Windows taskbar, right-click the Windows icon ( ), and then click Open Windows Explorer . Windows Explorer opens.
  6. Click the CD drive letter. The CD contents is listed on the right side of the window.
    If the CD drive is not displaying in Windows Explorer, click the arrow next to Computer to list all of the drives on the PC.
  7. Click Organize .
  8. Click Select All .
  9. With the files still selected, click Organize , and then click Copy .
  10. Close Windows Explorer.
  11. Open the HP Software folder created in a previous step.
  12. Click Organize and then click Paste .
    NOTE:If a Cannot copy from source disk or drive or Cannot copy specified file error message opens in Windows 7 and other CDs work correctly in the CD drive, the software CD might be damaged or unusable. Skip to the 'Download and install the HP software' step in this document.
  13. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ), type C:\HP Software\setup.exe in the Search Programs and Files box, and then press Enter .
    NOTE:If C:\HP Software\setup.exe is not found, type C:\HP Software\hpzsetup.exe instead, and then press Enter .
  14. Double-click C:\HP Software\setup.exe or C:\HP Software\hpzsetup.exe .
  15. On the User Account Control window, click Continue .
  16. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
If you complete all of the steps and are still experiencing a problem, proceed to the next step.

Step six: Download and install the HP software

If you prefer to install your software now and a driver is available for your product, you can download a driver from the HP Website. Follow these steps to download and install the HP driver.

Download the software

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. Open a new window to browse to the Select Software and Drivers page:
    1. Right-click this link, Select Software and Drivers , and then click Open in New Window .
    2. If prompted, type your product number. You might also need to click it in a list of similar products.
    3. Click Software & driver downloads .
      The Select Software and Drivers page opens.
  4. In the Select Software and Drivers window, click Microsoft Windows 7 .
  5. Click the Full Feature Software and Drivers option.
  6. Click Download only . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
  7. Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
  8. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
    Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.

Install the software

Follow these steps to install the downloaded software and driver.
  1. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
    NOTE:If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then click it.
  2. You can accept the default location to save the files. Click Next , and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for installation.
  3. When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
    For a Full Feature installation, you choose what type of installation you want. The following information might help you decide which installation type to use.
    Recommended Custom
    For full use of all your product features : This installation provides full product functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your product.

    This installation type is designed to work for most users.
    A custom type of installation might be available for your product. This installation allows you to install the minimum software required or the preferred software.

    Use this type of installation only if the computer is low on hard disk space or you attempted a recommended type of installation and received errors. (Try to fix any errors before starting a custom installation.)

    CAUTION:To avoid unintended loss of product functionality, read the description of each software component carefully during the installation process.
    The Recommended type of installation allows you to get the most out of your product.

Step seven: Order a replacement software CD

  1. Right-click this link, Select Software and Drivers , and then click Open in New Window .
  2. If prompted, type your product number. You might also need to click it in a list of similar products.
  3. Click your operating system.
    The Select software and drivers page opens.
  4. In the Software & Driver downloads window, click Microsoft Windows 7 .
  5. Under CD order page, click Software and Drivers CD .
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to order a new software CD.
