Before you begin
- Turn off the computer, and disconnect all cables. Be sure to disconnect the network cable before disconnecting the power cord.
- Transfer the computer to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a noncarpeted floor. Place the computer face-down on a soft flat surface. HP recommends that you place the computer on a blanket, towel, or other soft cloth to protect the touch screen surface from scratches or other damage.
- Do not remove a component from the protective packaging until you are ready to install it.

CAUTION:This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.

Removing the DVD drive
Use the steps in this section to remove the DVD drive.

WARNING:Make sure the computer is disconnected from power before starting.
Use the following steps to remove the optical drive from the computer:

| Step 2 To remove or replace the DVD optical disc drive, first remove the hard drive and memory cover, the stand, the IO cover, the feet, and the back cover. For information about removing these items, refer to the HP support document Removing the Back Cover . | ![]() |
| Step 3 Remove the eject button connector from the cable guide on the side of the drive cage. | ![]() |
| Step 4 Loosen the captured screw that secures the drive assembly in the computer. | ![]() |
| Step 5 Slide the cage to the side of the computer. ![]() CAUTION:Do not pull excessively
or strain the cables. Doing so could
dislodge them from the main

| Step 6 Pull the drive cage partially out of the computer. | ![]() |
| Step 7 Remove the combination power and data cable. | ![]() |
| Step 8 Completely remove the drive assembly from the computer. | ![]() |
| Step 9 To remove the optical drive from the cage, remove the four small screws, two on each side. | ![]() |
| Step 10 Slide the optical drive out of the cage. | ![]() |
Replacing the DVD drive
Use the following steps to replace the optical drive in the computer:
| Step 1 Slide the CD/DVD drive into the metal cage with the label side up... | ![]() |
| ...making sure to align the side of the drive against the tabs inside the cage. | ![]() |
| Step 2 Align the screw holes on the drive with the holes on the cage. | ![]() |
| Step 3 Replace the four small screws that secure the drive in the cage. | ![]() |
| Step 4 Find the three slots on the bottom of the optical drive cage. | ![]() |
| Then find the three tabs inside the computer that match the slots on the drive cage. | ![]() |
| Step 5 Connect the combination power/data cable to the drive. | ![]() |
| Step 6 Align the slots of the cage over the tabs in the computer. | ![]() |
| Step 7 Slide the drive assembly into place until it is secure. | ![]() |
| Step 8 Replace the eject button connector in the cable guide on the side of the drive cage. | ![]() |
| Step 9 Tighten the screw for the drive assembly to secure the drive assembly in the computer. | ![]() |
