Setting Up the Printer for a Wireless Network for the HP Officejet 4500 Wireless All-in-One Printer

  • PrintPrint

Introduction

This document explains how to install the print driver and software to use your HP printer on a wireless network. If you have more than one computer on the network, install the software on each computer that you plan to share with the printer.
If you already set up the printer and are just looking for the driver to download, click here for the HP Software and Driver Downloads page. If prompted, type your printer name, press Enter, and then click Drivers.
Follow these steps to install the printer software on a PC running Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8.

Step one: Prepare for the installation

  1. Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
    • Your network is already set up: Before you can install the printer, your wireless network must be set up. Follow the instructions that came with your router or access point to set up the network.
    • Obtain the network name and password: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier). The password is also referred to as the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
      Tip
To gather the network name and password, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or contact the access point manufacturer. HP cannot set up or change the network SSID, WEP key, or WPA passphrase.
    • Internet access: Required for HP Web Services only. HP recommends broadband internet access such as cable or DSL.
  2. Make sure that your wireless-capable printer, router, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
  3. Place the printer close to the computer during the installation.
  4. Exit all applications running on your computer.
The HP Print and Scan Doctor quickly diagnoses and resolves many printing, scanning, and connectivity problems. It also can easily locate your wireless network login information.
NOTE:The HP Print and Scan Doctor is available for most HP products, and it is available in most languages. However, it might not be available for older HP product models. This tool is not available for Mac OS X operating systems.
  1. Click Download, and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
  2. Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. The HP Print and Scan Doctor opens.
  3. On the Menu bar in the Print and Scan Doctor window, click Network, and then click Show Advanced Info.
  4. Click Show Wireless Info.
