How to Get Your Printer Working with Windows 7

Introduction

If you have recently changed your operating system (OS) to Windows 7, this document is your guide to getting your HP printer working with the new operating system.
The drivers for your HP product are already included in the new Windows 7 operating system! You do not need to download drivers to use the product. Keep reading to learn how to install the print driver
A print driver is a software program that allows the computer to run the HP product.

Getting started in Windows 7

Select your question or scenario from the following list, and then review the information.

Follow these steps to remove previous HP drivers, and then install the new driver.

Step one: Remove previous HP drivers

Before you upgrade your existing computer from Vista to the Windows 7 operating system, follow these steps to remove the current drivers.
When you install the HP software, the software includes a software removal tool (HP Uninstaller) to simplify the software removal process. The HP Uninstaller is only available if you have the full version of the software installed on your computer. If you do not have the full version (basic driver only), try the next method for removing the software.
  1. If your product connects to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the USB cable from the HP product.

  2. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ), and then click Control Panel . The Windows Control Panel opens.
  3. Under Programs , click Uninstall a Program . A list of programs installed on your computer opens.
  4. In the list of installed programs, click your HP product, and then click Uninstall/Change . The HP Uninstaller opens.
    If you do not see your product in this list, the HP Uninstaller is not available for your product. Try the next method for removing the software.
  5. Select Uninstall all HP products or Choose which HP products according to the guidelines earlier in this document, and then click Next .
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
    CAUTION:If you are asked to remove shared files, click No . Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.
  7. Disconnect the product from the power source, and then restart the computer.
If the previous method was unsuccessful, follow these steps to remove the driver through the Printers folder.
  1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ), and then click Control Panel . The Windows Control Panel opens.
  2. Under Hardware and Sounds ( ), click Printer . The printer folder opens.
  3. Find the printer icon ( ) representing your HP product, right-click it, and then click Delete .
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the driver.

Step two: Install the drivers included in the Windows 7 operating system (in-OS drivers)

When your new computer or operating system is up and running, simply connect the USB cable from the computer to the rear of the HP product, and then press the Power button ( ) to turn it on.

Windows 7 detects the hardware and automatically installs the correct driver. A notification lets you know when installation begins and when it is complete. You do not have to download any software or insert the product CD.
Follow these steps to remove previous HP drivers, and then install the new driver.

  2. Click the Windows icon ( ), and then click Devices and printers .
  3. Find the printer icon ( ) representing your HP product, right-click it, and then click Remove device .
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the driver.
  5. Repeat these steps to delete multiple instances of the same printer icon, and also for any fax icons for the product.
  6. Reboot your computer.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Select a topic below to learn more about the functionality of the in-OS driver.
Although your HP product essentially functions the same with the in-OS driver, you might notice some differences. Following is a summary of the differences in functionality with this driver.
Note the following limited functionalities with an in-OS driver:
  • No access to HP Solution Center. You will not have access to HP Solution Center ( ). However, see the workarounds at the end of this document for ways to accomplish tasks as you did before.
  • Limited functionality in HP Toolbox. You can still access the HP Toolbox ( ) with the in-OS driver. However, the HP Toolbox functionality is limited. For example, you are unable to check estimated ink levels. See the workarounds at the end of this document for ways to accomplish some common HP Toolbox tasks.
  • Importing and viewing images on a memory card . If your product has a memory card slot, you can use the workaround at the end of this document to import and view images on a memory card.
  • Limited button functionality. If your HP product has buttons on the front panel, some of the buttons will not function as before. Following are examples of buttons that function and buttons that do not function with the in-OS driver:

  1. Click File , and then click Print .
  2. Click the button that opens the Properties dialog box:
    Depending on the software program, this button might be Properties , Options , Printer Setup , Printer , or Preferences .
  3. Click the Features tab, and then click Printer Services . The HP Toolbox opens.
Printer SettingsFrom the program you are using to print:

  1. Click File , and then click Print .
  2. Click the button that opens the Properties dialog box:
    Depending on the software program, this button might be Properties , Options , Printer Setup , Printer , or Preferences .
    The Properties window opens, where you can change print settings for various print tasks.

You can still check ink levels with an in-OS driver. To do so, print a self-test page from your HP product, and the ink levels will display on the printed page.

If you are located outside of the US, follow these steps to purchase cartridges using HP SureSupply.
  1. Click this link, HP SureSupply .
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and make sure that the country or region location is correct.
Use these steps to print from a software program.
  1. Open the document to be printed in the software application in which it was created.
  2. Click File , and then click Print .

If your product has a memory card slot, follow these steps to access images on a memory card.
  1. Insert the memory card into the appropriate memory card slot on the product.
    NOTE:If the memory card is already inserted, remove it, and then reinsert it.
  2. On the Autoplay window that opens, click Import Pictures , View Pictures , or Open folder to view files .
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
