Transferring Files or Folders between User Accounts (Windows 7)

This information applies to HP and Compaq desktop computers running Windows 7.
Follow these steps to transfer files or folders from one user account to another. Do this when creating multiple user accounts on the same computer with identical settings, or if you forget your login password and need to create a new user account.
NOTE:You must be logged in as an administrator to complete these steps. For more information, see Managing User Accounts and Logins in Windows 7 .Files and folders must not be encrypted.
  1. Click Start , and then click Computer.

  2. Click the Organize drop-down list, and then click Folder and search options.

  3. Click the View tab, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives, and then click OK.

  4. Double-click the C: drive, double-click the Users folder, and then double-click the folder where the source files or folders are located.
    NOTE:In this example, the source account is named "User1", and the source files and folders are located in the C:/Users/User1 directory.

    The following message is displayed when the user account does not have administrator permissions:

    Click Continue to gain access to the file or folder, or click Cancel to return to the previous screen. You must use an account with administrator permissions to continue. For more information about permissions, see Managing User Accounts and Logins in Windows 7 .
  5. Select the files or folders by clicking them. Hold the CTRL key to select multiple files or folders. To select all files or folders, click Organize, and then click Select all.

  6. Click Organize, and then click Copy.

  7. Click Start , and then click Computer.
  8. Double-click the C: drive, double-click the Users folder, and then double-click the destination folder.
    NOTE:In this example, the destination account is named "User2", and the destination files and folders are located in the C:/Users/User2 directory.

  9. Click Organize, and then click Paste.

    The following message is displayed when you attempt to paste files or folders which have the same name as those in the destination folder:

    Click Yes to merge the source files into the destination folder, or click No to return to the previous screen.
