Setting up the All-in-One (Hardware)

Introduction

This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the product. Complete these steps before you install the product software on your computer. If you already set up the product hardware, and need software installation help, see Links to Software Installation Instructions at the end of this document.
This document includes the following steps to set up the product:
  • Unpack the All-in-One
  • Check the contents of the box
  • Connect the power cord and adapter
  • Turn the All-in-One on
  • Select the language/region
  • Set the date and time
  • Load plain white paper
  • Install the cartridges
  • Align the cartridges

Setting up the All-in-One

Follow these steps in order. When you are finished, you can click the appropriate link at the end of this document if you need instructions to install the product software.
CAUTION:Do NOT connect the USB cable now. For most models you need a USB cable to connect the product to the computer, but you will be prompted to connect it at the correct time during software installation.
NOTE:The HP Officejet 4500 G510n All-in-One is wireless capable and does not require a USB cable if you are using a wireless network.

Step one: Unpack the All-in-One

  1. Remove the tape and cardboard packaging from inside and around the product.
  2. Attach the paper tray by inserting the pegs into the correct slots on the front of the product.

  3. Pull out and unfold the tray extender.

Step two: Check the contents of the box

The contents might vary by country/region. See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.
NOTE:The USB cable must be purchased separately. HP recommends using a USB 2.0 high-speed compliant cable that is 3 meters (10 feet) or less in length.

Step three: Connect the power cord and adapter

  1. Connect the power cord to the back of the product.
  2. Connect the power cord to the power supply.
  3. Connect the power cord to the electrical outlet.

Step four: Turn the All-in-One on

Press the Power button ( ) to turn the product on.

Step five: Select the language/region

After turning the product on, the product might prompt you to set the language and country/region.
If the default language and country/region settings are satisfactory, you can skip this step.
If you want to change the defaults, follow these steps.
  1. On the product control panel, press Setup ( ).
  2. Press the Left ( ) or Right ( ) Arrow button to select Basic Settings , and then press OK .
  3. Press the Left ( ) or Right ( ) Arrow button to select Set Language , and then press OK .
  4. Use the numeric keypad to enter the two-digit code for the language, and then press 1 to confirm the selection.
  5. Press the Left ( ) or Right ( ) Arrow button to select Set Location , and then press OK .
  6. Press the Left ( ) or Right ( ) Arrow button to select the correct country/region, and then press OK .
  7. Press 1 to confirm the selection.

Step six: Set the date and time

  1. On the product control panel, press Setup ( ).
  2. Press the Left ( ) or Right ( ) Arrow button to select Basic Settings , and then press OK .
  3. Press the Left ( ) or Right ( ) Arrow button to select Date and Time , and then press OK .
  4. After Enter date displays on the control panel, use the keypad on the control panel to type the date in the correct two-digit format, MM-DD-YY (01-01-07). After entering the date, press OK .
  5. After Enter time displays on the control panel, use the keypad on the control panel to type the time in the correct format, HH:MM (01:45), and then use the Right ( ) Arrow button to set AM or PM. After entering the time, press OK .

Step seven: Load plain paper

Follow these steps to load plain paper into the product.
NOTE:Load plain, white paper. Special media or colored paper will cause the cartridge alignment step to fail.
  1. Slide the paper-width guide to its outermost position.
  2. Insert the stack of paper print-side down along the right side of the paper tray.
    Make sure that the stack of paper aligns with the right and back edges of the tray, and fits below the line marking in the tray.

  3. Slide the paper-width guide inward until it stops at the edge of the stack of paper.

Step eight: Install the cartridges

  1. Remove the new cartridges from their packaging. Be careful to touch only the black plastic.
  2. Gently remove the plastic tape by pulling the pink pull tab.

    3 - Ink nozzles under tape
    CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  3. Open the front access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the product.

  4. Hold the new cartridge so the HP logo is facing up, slide it at a slight upward angle into the empty slot, and push it until it snaps into place.
    • To install a tri-color cartridge, insert it into the left slot.
    • To install a black cartridge, insert it into the right slot.

  5. Close the front access door.

Step nine: Align the cartridges

NOTE:The cartridge alignment process starts automatically when you install new cartridges.
  1. Make sure you have loaded plain, white paper in the main tray.
  2. On the product control panel, press Setup ( ).
  3. Press the Left ( ) or Right ( ) Arrow button to select Tools , and then press OK .
  4. Press the Left ( ) or Right ( ) Arrow button to select Align Cartridge , and then press OK . The alignment page prints.
  5. After the alignment page prints, place the alignment page print-side down on the scanner glass.

  6. Close the scanner lid.
  7. Press OK to scan the alignment page and complete the cartridge alignment.
  8. Discard or recycle the alignment page.

After you complete the previous setup steps, you can install the product software with the product CD or by downloading the software from the HP website. For instructions, click the link for your computer operating system.
CAUTION:For USB connections, do NOT connect the USB cable yet. You will be prompted to connect it at the correct time during software installation.
