PrintHP QuickWeb is an innovative suite of applications that can be accessed within seconds of powering on the computer. HP QuickWeb resides outside the Windows operating system, allowing you to quickly check e-mail, surf the web, chat via instant messenger and Skype, listen to music, and view pictures.
The QuickWeb applications: Pidgen e-mail, Splashtop web browser, Skype, Chat, photo viewer and music player are similar to applications found in the Windows operating environment: web-based e-mail (Gmail, Yahoo Mail), Internet Explorer, Skype, instant messenger, and MediaSmart. However, because the Instant On System (IOS) loads prior to the Windows operating system, the QuickWeb applications have to be configured individually. For example, configuring e-mail server settings in Windows does not automatically configure the Instant Web Pidgin e-mail program in QuickWeb.
QuickWeb runs in the IOS environment which allows applications to read data from the hard drive, but not write data to the hard drive. Therefore if data needs to be saved in a word processing or spreadsheet program, click the Launch Windows icon to advance into the full Windows operating system. QuickWeb and Windows do not use the same hardware and software driver configuration settings. For instance, after you configure the Network, Browser, and Email settings in Windows, you must configure the same settings in QuickWeb. Similarly, the computer's clock, date, and time settings must be configured so that both operating environments use the same Time Zone and Daylight Savings Time settings.
Set QuickWeb to run at boot
When the computer is powered on, the IOS environment should automatically display after a few seconds. If QuickWeb does not load, and the computer proceeds to the Windows operating environment, the IOS environment or the QuickWeb application might not be enabled. To enable QuickWeb, you must
Enable IOS in BIOS
Confirm that IOS is enabled in the BIOS by completing the following:
- Power on the computer and repeatedly pres F10 to enter the BIOS setup utility.
- Use the right and left arrow keys to navigate to the System Configuration menu.
- Use the up and down arrow keys to navigate to Boot Options , and then press the Enter key.
- Navigate to Instant-On and select Enabled .
- If desired, update the value for Delay to Boot Windows .
The HP IOS program is now enabled within the BIOS utility.
Enable QuickWeb in IOS
Confirm that the IOS is configured to automatically launch within the Windows environment by completing the following steps:
- In the Windows environment, click Start , All Programs , IOS , IOS Configuration Tool .
- Select Enable IOS .
- If you select Enable OS countdown timer , set the timer to at least 10 seconds to allow enough time to use QuickWeb before Windows automatically loads.
Reinstall missing IOS or QuickWeb
If the IOS was previously configured and QuickWeb worked properly but has now stopped working, the program can be reinstalled using the HP Recovery Manager. Reinstall the program using the Recovery Manager, by completing the following steps:
- Click Start , All Programs , Recovery Manager , and Recovery Manager .
- Select Software Program Reinstallation , and then click Next .
- Select HP IOS , and then click Next .
The HP IOS program is now restored on the computer.

Starting QuickWeb 3.0 or Greater
If you are using QuickWeb 3.0 or greater, this is not the document you should be using. However, to start HP QuickWeb 3.0 or greater, press the QuickWeb key (f5
) or the QuickWeb button on select models when the computer is off or is being started. The QuickWeb button is a second button located near the power button. You will not be able to enable
or disable
QuickWeb in the BIOS or in the Windows environment.
To enable QuickWeb in versions prior to 3.0, proceed as follows:
QuickWeb Applications
QuickWeb applications are pre-installed on the notebook within the IOS environment. The application allows you to quickly perform common functions. Click on any link in the table below for additional information.

Splashtop Browser
- Instantly access the World Wide Web. Once the Splashtop browser is open, enter a URL address to view a desired web site.
- Select Configuration panel and set up this application before use.
- Splashtop has menu options that consist of File , Edit , View , History , Bookmarks , Tools , and Help .
- Includes features such as tabbed browsing, video and games, and pop-up blocker.
Music Player
- Listen to digital MP3 media stored on the internal hard drive or an external media storage device.
- Use the Toolbar located at the bottom of the Music Player to Play , Pause , control volume , Previous track , Next track , a "Seek slider," shuffle , Repeat All , Repeat Single , Track/Time display , and audio spectrum display .
- Play files directly from folders or from a personal playlist.
- To create a playlist, right-click anywhere within the Playlists area to open the pop-up menu, and then select Create Playlist . Always select songs for the Playlist in the desired sequence because the sequence cannot be changed after adding them to the playlist.
- Perform file management: Create , Add To , Rename , and Delete playlists. You can drag-and-drop tiles between folders and playlists.

Photo Manager
- View images and arrange JPEG/BMP/GIF/PNG files into albums.
- Display and share photos in different view modes.
- The same photo can be displayed in multiple albums or slide shows.
- Albums use very little disk space because each image is displayed by referring to link to your hard drive or external storage devices (such as USB devices, card readers, or optical disks) where the image is actually stored.
- View pictures in thumbnail view, or in an enlarged view, or play them in a Slide Show with transition effects.
- Use the Toolbar located at the bottom of the Photo Manager window to perform various photo manipulation functions such as Zoom in/out , Rotate clockwise/counter-clockwise , Add/Delete photos , and more.

Skype
- Talk to other Skype customers on the telephone using VoIP (Voice-over-Internet Protocol) technology.
- Make free video and voice calls to another computer or call land-lines and mobile phones for a nominal fee.

- Send and receive instant messages.
- Send and receive files.
Chat
- Chat with other people using your existing user accounts in various instant messaging programs such as AIM, Google Talk, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger.
- You must configure this application before using it.
- Set chat preferences using the Accounts menu.
Calendar
- Use the Calendar to access other Windows based calendar services such as Google Calendar and Windows Live calendar.
- You must have a registered Email address and Password with a web-based calendar service before editing the Calendar application settings.
- You must configure this application before using it.
- Use Pidgen Email to access other web-based calendar services such as Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, and Windows Live Hotmail.
- You must have a registered Email address and Password with a web-based email service before editing the Email application settings.
- You must configure this application before using it.
QuickWeb LaunchBar
In the lower right section of the main screen of the IOS environment includes a LaunchBar similar to the Windows Taskbar.

Configuration Panel
To open the Configuration Panel, click the
icon in the LaunchBar. The configuration tools are discussed in the following sections.

Date and Time
Use the Date and Time tool to set the date and time for the IOS environment. This tool can also be opened by clicking the date/time display in the LaunchBar.
Input Language
Use the Input Language tool to select the programming language used to communicate between the application and the operating system. Verify that the Enable Input language service
checkbox is selected. The QuickWeb application will now use the Smart Common Input Method (SCIM language).
Language and Keyboard
Use the Language and Keyboard tool to set the desired language in which menu items, dialog box messages, and keyboard characters will be displayed within the IOS.
Network
Select the Network tool to open the IOS Power Adapter dialog box that displays Internet connection options.
- LAN : Use this method when using a home router (which is connected to your DSL/cable modem), IOS will automatically use the active port when you enable LAN and have a cable connected to only one port.
- xDSL/cable dial-up : Use this method when a network cable is connected directly to your DSL/cable modem. This method is also referred to as PPPoE.
- WiFi : Use this method when setting up a wireless connection to a wireless access point. Verify that the wireless power button is on.
If your IOS Power Adapter is connected to a wired LAN, your network connection will usually become active by itself. If you need to re-establish your connection to a previously used network, or if you need to connect to a wireless network, complete the following steps.
- Open the Network dialog box by selecting the Network tool within the Configuration Panel. Select the Network tool within the Configuration Panel to open the Network Configuration dialog box.
- Double-click the desired network. The Advanced Network Settings window will appear.
- Select the WiFi tab.
- Click Search to view any wireless networks within range. Choose a network from this list. The chosen network can be a public wireless network without encryption protection, or a private network that has been set up for you.
NOTE:With a private network, you will need SSID (network name), the type of security (WPA or WEP), and the passcode key. - Select the desired network and then click OK .
- In the Network dialog box, click Save . A Save Profile dialog box appears.
For your convenience, all your profiles are saved in the Profile drop-down list.
Environment Settings
The Environment settings dialog box contains three tabs: Power Management, General, and About.
- Power Management tab : Select either the Energy Saving to conserve battery power, or the Performance profile to maximize the speed of applications. The default time-out settings for Display or for Shutdown can be changed according to the type of power supply being used. Save the settings to a new profile named Custom .
- Printer tab: This only appears if a printer is connected; the settings vary based on individual printers. To set up the printer, follow the on-screen instructions.
- General tab : Select the Restore button to clear the IOS settings, as well as any personal information stored by the web browser (Bookmarks, Cookies, History, etc.).
- About tab : This tab displays version and copyright information related to the IOS.
Volume Control
Adjust the volume for the built in Main speaker and Microphone. When using an external microphone, click Advanced
to select Microphone 2 (Front/External)
as the Input Source.
Applications
When configuring the Calendar
or Email
applications in the IOS, you are required to specify the related information in order to access your web-based calendar or email accounts via IOS. If the web-based Calendar or Email service information needs to be changed, select Applications
in the Configuration Panel.
