Using and Troubleshooting HP Update

Introduction

HP Update identifies the latest updates necessary for HP software, drivers, firmware, tools, troubleshooting tips, and utilities installed on your computer. You choose which updates to install.
Use this document to learn how to use HP Update and troubleshoot any issues.

The following sections provide information about how to check for updates and change the settings.
HP Update notifies you when it is time to check for updates at specific intervals, usually weekly. When the HP Update notification window displays, follow these steps to check for and install any available updates.
  1. When the HP Update notification window displays in the lower-right corner of the computer, click Continue.

    NOTE:If you cannot click Continue in Windows Vista, right-click any area of the Windows desktop directly above the Software Update message, and then select Close Sidebar. Windows Sidebar minimizes, and then you can click Continue.
    The Welcome to HP Update window opens.
  2. Click Next to check for updates.
    • If new updates are available, select the check box next to each update you want to install, and then click Next to download and install the updates.
    • If no updates are available, click Finish.
You can check for updates at any time, even if HP Update does not notify you. Follow these steps to check for updates manually.
  1. Open HP Update.
      Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
      Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
      Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
  2. In the Welcome to HP Update window, click Next.
    HP Update checks for the latest updates from the Web.
    • If new updates are available, select the check box next to each update you want to install, and then click Next to download and install the updates.
    • If no updates are available, click Finish.
HP recommends that you set HP Update to check for new software updates automatically. HP Update notifies you when an update becomes available. Follow these steps to change the notification setting.
  1. Open HP Update.
      Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
      Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
      Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
  2. In the HP Update window, click Settings.
    The HP Update Settings window opens.
  3. Select Automatically check the web for updates. Only notify me when an update is available.
  4. Click OK.
NOTE:HP Update always notifies you before downloading and installing updates.
HP recommends that you check for new software updates at least once every week. If you do not receive the automatic reminder messages, or receive reminders less than once a week, follow these instructions to change the timing setting.
  1. Open HP Update.
      Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
      Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
      Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
  2. In the HP Update window, click Settings.
    The HP Update Settings window opens.
  3. In the HP Update Settings window, choose how often you want HP Update to check for updates from the Check for software updates on the web drop-down list.
  4. Click OK.
The following sections provide information about troubleshooting common issues.
If an update fails or does not install correctly, follow these steps to install the downloaded updates manually.
  1. Close HP Update.
  2. Open the temporary files window.
      Click Start, click Run, type %temp% into the dialog box, and then click OK.
      Click the Windows icon (), type %temp% into the Start Search field, and then press Enter.
      Click the Windows icon (), type %temp% into the Search programs and files field, and then press Enter.
    The Temp folder opens. This folder contains the downloaded HP Update files.
  3. Sort the files by date.
  4. Find the oldest update in the list, and then double-click to open and install the update.
  5. Install the updates in order from oldest to newest until you install all available updates. You might have to restart the computer several times during this process.
  6. After all the updates have been installed, delete all the files from the temporary folder.
      Click Edit, click Select all, and then right-click anywhere in the Temp window and click Delete. Click Yes to delete all the files in the Temp folder.
      Click Organize, and then click Select all. With all files selected, click Organize, and then click Delete to delete all the files in the Temp folder.
      Click Organize, and then click Select all. With all files selected, click Organize, and then click Delete to delete all the files in the Temp folder.
    HP Update should now install updates correctly. If HP Update does not install updates correctly, repeat these steps.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If you have Windows Vista, right-click above the HP Software Update notification window, and then select Close Sidebar to close the Windows sidebar. You can open Windows Sidebar again from the tray icon or Start menu.
Temporarily set the display resolution to 1024 x 768 or higher to see if the problem is related to the display resolution.
    Right-click anywhere on the desktop, and then click Properties. Click the Settings tab, and then use the slide to adjust the screen resolution.
    Right-click anywhere on the desktop, and then click Screen resolution. From the Resolution drop-down list, select 1024 x 768 or higher, and then click OK to reset the screen resolution. Click Keep changes.
    Right-click anywhere on the desktop, and then click Screen resolution. From the Resolution drop-down list, select 1024 x 768 or higher, and then click OK to reset the screen resolution. Click Keep changes.
Right-click anywhere on the Windows taskbar, and then click Properties. Click to clear the checkbox next to Keep the taskbar on top of other windows.
    Right-click anywhere on the desktop, and then click Properties. Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced. From the DPI setting drop-down list, choose Normal size (96 DPI).
    Click the Windows icon (}, click Control panel, click Personalization, and then click Adjust font size (DPI).
    Click the Windows icon (}, click Control panel, click Appearance and Personalization, click Display, and then click Set custom text size (DPI).
If the update for a single program or device fails with error 9998 (Does not meet minimum system requirements), the update is probably not necessary. Error 9998 indicates that a specific requirement needed for the update was not found on the computer. For example, if the update was designed to update DVD playing software, but that software was removed from the computer, the error message displays.
Click any of the following questions to see the corresponding answer.
The HP Update window displays before the program checks for updates or after it finds necessary updates. Click Continue in this window to open HP Update.
HP Update offers software, hardware, driver, and firmware updates as they become available. If you do not have the most current version of the product software, product performance might be less than optimal. HP Update notifies you when new software becomes available and offers immediate download and automatic installation.
The HP Update program compares the HP software and hardware installed on your computer with the updates available from HP. You can choose to install some or all of those updates.
HP Update opens when it is set to check for the latest updates on the Web. See the section in this document on How to use HP Update to change any update settings.

HP Update scans your computer for installed HP software and products and uses this information to determine if any updates are available for the HP software on your system. Your computer's IP address is used only to transmit this data. HP Update does not create any unique identifier that can be used to identify your computer. HP Update does not collect your name, address, e-mail address, or other forms of personally identifiable information.
Follow these steps to view the HP privacy policy:
    Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, click HP Update, and then click HPs privacy policy in the HP Update window.
    Click the Windows icon (), click Programs or All Programs, click HP, click HP Update, click Help, and then click Privacy Policy.
    Click the Windows icon (), click Programs or All Programs, click HP, click HP Update, click Help, and then click Privacy Policy.
If you do not want the HP Update window to open automatically and download updates, follow these steps to turn off updates.
  1. Open HP Update.
      Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
      Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
      Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Update.
  2. In the HP Update window, click Settings.
    The HP Update Settings window opens.
  3. Click to clear the checkbox next to Automatically check the Web for updates. Only notify me when an update is available.
  4. Check Never.
  5. Click OK.
