Blinking Lights
The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking (flashing) lights displayed on the printer control panel, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.
Issue: The Wireless Status light is blinking slowly
In this normal condition, the following control panel light pattern displays:
- Power light : On
- Attention light : Off
- Check color cartridge light : Off
- Check black cartridge light : Off
- Wireless Status light : Blinking
Solution one: Wait for the printer to establish a connection
The Wireless Status light
blinks when attempting to connect to the wireless router or access point. Wait a few minutes, and then check the light again.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Check for issues with the wireless network
The following factors can cause the printer to lose the wireless connection:
- The network connection is no longer active, or has low signal strength.
- The printer goes into sleep mode or standby mode.
- The printer is either too far away from the wireless router, or too close to it. The recommended distance between the printer and the router is 3 ft to 5 ft.
- A firewall prevents the printer from accessing the computer and wireless network.
- A nearby device that emits radio signals (such as a microwave or cordless telephone) might interfere with the wireless connection.
- A virtual private network (VPN)prevents the printer from accessing the computer and wireless network.Virtual Private Network - A secure network that is layered on top of an existing network. The private nature of a VPN means that the data traveling over the VPN is not generally visible to the other computers or printers on the existing network. An example of this is a computer that is connected on a home network as well as over a VPN connection will not have access to other devices connected on the home network such as a wireless printer.

Solution three: Connect the printer to your network
Select your operating system for steps to connect the printer to the wireless network by installing the printer software.

Issue: The Wireless Status light is blinking fast
In this error condition
, the following control panel light pattern displays:
- Power light : On
- Attention light : Off
- Check color cartridge light : Off
- Check black cartridge light : Off
- Wireless Status light : Blinking fast
A Wi-Fi protected setup (WPS) of the printer to the wireless network failed, or the printer cannot not find a compatible WPS wireless router to connect to.
Follow these solutions in the order presented to try connecting the printer to the wireless network using Wi-Fi protected setup (WPS), or connect to the network by installing the software.
Solution one: Try the WPS connection again
Use one of the following methods to connect the printer to your WPS-enabled wireless network.

NOTE:If your router does not support WPS connections, continue to the next solution to connect the printer during a software installation.
- On the printer control panel, press the Wireless button (
). The Wireless Menu
displays. - Press the button (
) next to Settings
. - Press the button next to WPS , and then press the button next to Push Button .The printer prompts you to press the WPS button on the wireless router.
NOTE:The printer starts a timer that allows about two minutes to press the WPS button on the wireless router. - Press the WPS button on the router. The printer automatically finds the wireless network and configures the connection.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
- On the printer control panel, press the Wireless button (
). The Wireless Menu
displays. - Press the button (
) next to Settings
. - Press the button next to WPS , and then press the button next to PIN . The printer displays a PIN to type into the wireless router.
NOTE:The printer starts a timer that allows four minutes to enter the PIN in the settings for the wireless router. - Access the WPS settings for the wireless router, and then input the PIN into the correct field. These steps vary by manufacturer.The printer automatically finds the wireless network and configures the connection.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Connect to the network by installing the printer software
You can connect the printer to the wireless network during a full feature HP printer software installation. Follow these steps to install the software.
Step one: Prepare for installation
- Make sure that the printer, network router or access point, and computer are all turned on, and that the computer is connected to the wireless network.
NOTE:If you set up device filtering on your router and need to find the MAC hardware address for your printer, you can print a Wireless Test page to retrieve the address.- On the printer control panel, press the Wireless button (
). The Wireless Menu
displays. - Press the button (
) next to Wireless Test
to print the page.
You can print a Wireless Test page from the printer control panel. The page includes the printer IP address and MAC address, as well as the printer network status. Follow these steps to print the page. - Exit all software applications running on your computer.
- Make sure that you have the following requirements:
- Your wireless HP printer is placed close to the router during the installation
- Administrator privileges or password
- A USB cable
- Network name: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier)
- WEP key or WPA security passphrase for the network
NOTE:To gather the SSID and the WEP key or WPA security passphrase, you can ask the person who originally set up your network, see the documentation that came with the access point, or use an automated tool from HP to get your network information.

If you have difficulty gathering your network information, try using the HP Print and Scan Doctor to retrieve your network name and password. ![]() NOTE:The HP Print and Scan Doctor might not be available for all HP products, particularly older products. It is available for most products, however, and in most languages. This tool is available for all Windows operating systems except Windows RT. The tool is not available for Mac OS operating systems. Follow these steps to download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, and then locate your network login information.

Step two: Install the software
Choose one of the following methods to install your HP software.
Follow these steps to download and install the software from the HP website.
Step one: Download the software
- Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
- Turn the product on.
- Browse to the Get Software and Drivers page: Get Software and Drivers
- Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
- Type your product number in the window.
- Click Next . If necessary click your model in a list of similar products.
- Click Software and Driver Downloads .
- Click the drop-down arrow (
), and then click your operating system. - Continue to the next step.
- Click the drop-down arrow (
), and then click your operating system. - Click Next .
- Continue to the next step.
- Click the Plus sign (
) next to Driver
, and then click the driver that you want to download. - Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions (
) for complete download instructions. - Click Download . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
- Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
- Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
Step two: Install the software
Repeat these steps to install the software on each computer that is using the printer wirelessly over the same network.

NOTE:Do not connect the USB cable
until the installer prompts you to connect it.

: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click continue
, unblock
, yes
, allow
, or permit
. Otherwise, the software installation fails.- When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then double-click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
NOTE:If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then double-click it. - You can accept the default location to save the files. Click Next , and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for installation.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
- When prompted to choose a connection type, select Network , and then click Next .
- Click Next again, and then follow the on-screen instructions to connect the USB cable to finish installing the software for a wireless connection.
- Insert the printer CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to start.If the installer does not start automatically, follow these steps to start it:On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (
).Click Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
NOTE:If the User Account Control screen opens, click Continue . - Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
- When prompted to choose a connection type, select Network , and then click Next .
- Click Next again, and then follow the on-screen instructions to connect the USB cable to finish installing the software for a wireless connection.

- The output tray is closed.
- The paper tray is empty.
- A paper jam has occurred.
Solution one: Lower the output tray
- Lower the output tray, and then pull out the tray extender.
- Check the printer control panel for the blinking lights.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Load paper
Follow these steps to load more paper, or to reload the existing paper stack into the paper tray.
- Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.
- Load a stack of paper into the input tray, print-side up. Slide the stack of paper in until it stops.
- Slide the paper width guide snugly against the paper.
- Check the printer control panel for the blinking lights.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Check the condition of the paper
Paper feed issues might result from dusty, torn, wrinkled, wet, or folded paper in the tray. The quality of the paper can also make a difference. Use only good quality paper that meets printer specifications. Follow these steps to check the condition of the paper.

NOTE:For the purposes of these troubleshooting steps, use only 10 to 25 sheets of plain white, unused paper.
Step one: Check the condition of the paper
- Remove the stack of paper from the tray.
- Check for obstructions inside the tray. Use a flashlight to view the mechanism inside the tray to make sure that nothing blocks the paper from engaging with the rollers. Even small pieces of paper can cause paper feed issues.
NOTE:If you find obstructions in the paper path, skip to the section on cleaning the rollers. - Examine the condition of the paper, and then replace any ripped, dusty, curled, wrinkled, or bent paper.
- Make sure that all the paper in the stack is the same size and type. Never load mixed types of paper in the tray. The product can only process one type of paper at a time.
- Tap the stack of paper on a flat surface to align the edges.
- Make sure that the stack of paper contains no fewer than 10 sheets and no more than 25 sheets of paper.
NOTE:You need to use 10 to 25 sheets of paper only for purposes of these troubleshooting steps. When the issue is resolved, you can resume loading paper according to the paper tray capacity specifications for your product.
Step two: Reload the paper
- Raise the input tray.
- Lower the output tray, and then pull out the tray extender.
- Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.
- Load a stack of plain paper into the input tray, print-side up. Slide the stack of paper in until it stops.
- Slide the paper width guide snugly against the paper.
Step three: Print a self-test report
Printing a self-test report verifies if the hardware functions correctly. Follow these steps to print a self-test report.
- Press the button next to Setup on the printer control panel (
). - Press the button next to Printer Report on the printer control panel (
).The self-test report prints.
- If the self-test report prints , try printing the original document again. If the issue is resolved, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.
- If the self-test report does not print , continue with the next solution.
Solution four: Clear the paper jam
Follow these steps in the order presented to clear the paper jam.
Preventing paper jams
The following recommendations can help prevent recurring paper jams in your HP product.
- Before loading paper in the tray, hold the stack of paper, and then tap the bottom edge on a flat surface so that the stack is even on all sides.
- Make sure that the length and width adjusters on the tray are correctly positioned, and then push the stack of paper forward until it stops in the tray.
CAUTION:Do not force the paper to move too far forward in the tray. - Do not overload the tray with paper.
- Only add paper to the tray when the product is not printing.
- Make sure the HP product supports the paper type. See the documentation that came with the HP product for more information.
- Do not print on paper with paper clips or staples attached.
- Do not use paper that is bent, torn, dusty, damp, wrinkled, curled, or paper that does not lie flat.
- Use only one type of paper at a time. Do not mix different types, weights, or sizes of paper.
- Do not use paper that is too thin, too thick, or too glossy for the product.
Causes of paper jams
The following factors can cause paper jams:
- Paper loaded incorrectly in the paper tray.
- Damaged or dirty paper rollers.
- Torn, wrinkled, or damp paper loaded in the paper tray.
- The rear access door or two-sided printing accessory (duplexer) might not be closed or is not locked into place.
- Paper was added to a stack already in the tray while the HP product was printing.
- The tray contains more than one type of paper.
- The paper is jammed inside the HP product where you cannot see it.
- An obstruction is blocking the paper path.
- Torn pieces of paper from a previous jam are stuck in the product.
- The tray is too full.
- If printing on an envelope, the edges of the envelope are bent.
Step one: Remove any loose paper
Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

CAUTION:Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the
print mechanism.
Step two: Clear the paper jam from the base of the All-in-One
Use the following steps to check for and remove jammed paper from the base of the HP printer.
- Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Turn the printer so that you can access its underside (base).
- Press in the tabs on either side of the cleanout door to open it.
- Gently remove any jammed paper from inside the printer.
CAUTION:If the paper tears while removing it, check inside the door for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the printer, more paper jams are likely to occur. - Reattach the cleanout door. Gently push the door forward until it snaps into place.
- Reconnect the power cord to the back of the printer.
- Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Step three: Clear the jam from inside the All-in-One
- Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Gently remove any paper that is jammed inside the printer.
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Step four: Clear the jam from the front of the All-in-One
If you cannot remove the jam from the base, or from inside the printer, follow these steps to remove the paper jam from the front.
- Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Grasp the jammed paper with both hands and slowly pull it from the front of the printer.
NOTE:If the paper tears while removing it, check for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the printer, more paper jams are likely to occur. - Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Step five: Reset the All-in-One
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product. - With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 15 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button (
) to turn it on.
Step six: Print a self-test report
Printing a self-test report verifies if the hardware functions correctly. Follow these steps to print a self-test report.
- Press the button next to Setup on the printer control panel (
). - Press the button next to Printer Report on the printer control panel (
).The self-test report prints.
- If these steps resolved the issue , and the test page prints , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.
- If the test page does not print , continue with the next solution.
Solution five: Make sure that the carriage moves freely
Follow these steps in the order given to make sure that the carriage moves freely.
Step one: Check the carriage
- Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
- Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.
- Without turning off the printer, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
WARNING:You must disconnect the power cord to allow you to move the carriage by hand and to reset the paper feed mechanism without the risk of an electrical shock. - Look inside the printer to see where the carriage is stuck, and then check for any torn paper or other objects that might be restricting the carriage. You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
CAUTION:If the paper tears when you remove it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If pieces of paper remain in the printer, more paper jams might occur. - Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.
- Reach inside the printer through the cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage.
- If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the printer , move the carriage to the left side of the printer.
- If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the printer , move the carriage to the right side of the printer.
- If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the printer , move the carriage to the right side of the printer.
- Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the printer. Firmly push the carriage to the left side of the printer, and then to the right side.
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Step two: Print a self-test report
Printing a self-test report verifies if the hardware functions correctly. Follow these steps to print a self-test report.
- Press the button next to Setup on the printer control panel (
). - Press the button next to Printer Report on the printer control panel (
).The self-test report prints.
- If these steps resolved the issue , and the test page prints , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.
- If the test page does not print , continue with the next solution.
Solution six: Service the All-in-One
If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One

Issue: All the lights are blinking
In this error condition
, all of the control panel lights are blinking:
- Power light : Blinking
- Attention light : Blinking
- Check color cartridge light : Blinking
- Check black cartridge light : Blinking
The printer is in an error state.
Solution one: Reset the All-in-One
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product. - With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 15 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button (
) to turn it on.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Plug the All-in-One directly into an electrical outlet
Plug the product directly into an electrical outlet to make sure that the power source functions correctly.
- Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
- Unplug the power cord from any power strips or surge suppressors.
- Plug the power cord directly into an electrical outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product. - Try the task again.If the issue persists, try a different electrical outlet.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Issue: One or both Check Cartridge lights are blinking
In this error condition
, the following control panel light pattern displays:
- Power light : On
- Attention light : Off
- Check color cartridge light : Blinking or off
- Check black cartridge light : Blinking or off
- One or both cartridges are not compatible with the printer.
- One or both cartridges are defective.
- One or both cartridges still have the protective tape on the nozzles.
- A problem has occurred with one or both cartridges.

- Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on.
- Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before continuing.
- Find the number on the label on the top of each cartridge.
- Make a note of the cartridge number printed on the label of each cartridge, and then close the front access door.
- Refer to the list of cartridge numbers in the HP Sure Supply window. If either of your cartridge numbers is not in the list, replace the cartridge with a new one that is in the list.For instructions on how to replace the cartridges, skip to the solution to replace the cartridges.
Solution two: Resolve the cartridge problem
Follow these steps in the order given to resolve the cartridge problem.
Step one: Clean the problem cartridge contacts
Follow these steps in the order given to clean the electrical contacts.

NOTE:If both cartridge lights are blinking, complete the steps for both cartridges.
- Gather the following items:
- Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available.
- Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
- Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves into the middle of the access area, unless there is an obstruction.
- Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Press down on one of the cartridges to release it, and then pull it out from its slot.
CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. - If there is tape on the cartridge, remove it. Do not remove the copper-colored strip.If you removed the tape from the cartridge, there is no need to clean the cartridge. Continue to the step to reinstall the cartridge.
- Place the cartridge on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up
- Dip a swab in the clean water and squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should only be slightly damp.
- Clean the cartridge contacts.
CAUTION: Avoid touching the nozzles.
NOTE:Clean the contacts quickly enough so that the cartridge is not outside of the printer for more than 30 minutes. The ink can dry and clog the nozzles if the cartridge is outside of the printer for too long. - Clean the contacts in the carriage for the problem cartridge.
WARNING:Make sure that the power cord is disconnected from the printer. - Wait ten minutes to allow the cartridge and carriage to dry.
- Place the cartridge in its slot at a slight, upward angle, and then press up and forward until the cartridge snaps into position.
- The tri-color cartridge (
) goes in the slot on the left. - The black cartridge (
) goes in the slot on the right.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Press the button next to OK on the control panel display (
).The printer prints an alignment page.
Step three: Align the cartridges
- Lift the scanner lid.
- Place the alignment page with the printed-side down on the right-front corner of the scanner glass. See the engraved guide next to the scanner glass for help loading the alignment page.
- Close the scanner lid.
- Press the button next to OK on the control panel display (
).The product scans the alignment page. - When the Alignment successful message displays on the control panel screen, press the button next to OK on the control panel display (
) to complete the alignment.
Step four: Print a self-test report
Printing a self-test report verifies if the hardware functions correctly. Follow these steps to print a self-test report.
- Press the button next to Setup on the printer control panel (
). - Press the button next to Printer Report on the printer control panel (
).The self-test report prints.

Step five: Replace the problem cartridge

- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product. - Open the cartridge door. The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.
- Lightly press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.
CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. - Remove the new cartridge from its packaging, and then pull the pink pull tab to remove the plastic tape.
CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles. Also, do not re-tape the cartridges. Doing so can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. - Hold the cartridge by its sides with the contacts toward the product and the nozzles facing down toward the bottom of the product, and then insert the cartridge into its slot.
- The tri-color cartridge (
) goes in the slot on the left - The black cartridge (
) goes in the slot on the right
- Push the cartridge forward into its slot until it snaps into place.
- Repeat these steps to replace the other cartridge, if necessary.
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Press the button next to OK on the control panel display (
).The product prints an alignment page.
Step six: Align the cartridges
- Lift the scanner lid.
- Place the alignment page with the printed-side down on the right-front corner of the scanner glass. See the engraved guide next to the scanner glass for help loading the alignment page.
- Close the scanner lid.
- Press the button next to OK on the control panel display (
).The product scans the alignment page. - When the Alignment successful message displays on the control panel screen, press the button next to OK on the control panel display (
) to complete the alignment.
Step seven: Print a self-test report
Printing a self-test report verifies if the hardware functions correctly. Follow these steps to print a self-test report.
- Press the button next to Setup on the printer control panel (

Issue: One or both Check Cartridge lights are on
In this error condition

The indicated cartridge is low on ink.
If one (or both) of the cartridges is low on ink, you do not need to replace the cartridges yet, unless you are dissatisfied with the print quality.

Solution two: Replace the problem cartridge
Follow these steps in the order given to replace the cartridge(s).

- Scroll to the bottom of the page and make sure that the country or region location is correct.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product. - Open the cartridge door. The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.
- Lightly press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.
CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. - Remove the new cartridge from its packaging, and then pull the pink pull tab to remove the plastic tape.

Doing so can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. - Hold the cartridge by its sides with the contacts toward the product and the nozzles facing down toward the bottom of the product, and then insert the cartridge into its slot.

- Push the cartridge forward into its slot until it snaps into place.
- Repeat these steps to replace the other cartridge, if necessary.
- Close the cartridge access door.

Step two: Align the cartridges
- Lift the scanner lid.
- Place the alignment page with the printed-side down on the right-front corner of the scanner glass. See the engraved guide next to the scanner glass for help loading the alignment page.
- Close the scanner lid.
- Press the button next to OK on the control panel display (
).The product scans the alignment page. - When the Alignment successful message displays on the control panel screen, press the button next to OK on the control panel display (
) to complete the alignment.
Issue: Both Check Cartridge lights and the Power light are blinking fast and the Attention light is on

Solution one: Close the cartridge access door
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Check the printer control panel for the blinking lights.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Clear any jammed paper
Jammed paper can cause the carriage to stall. Follow these steps to clear any jammed paper.
Preventing paper jams
The following recommendations can help prevent recurring paper jams in your HP product.
- Before loading paper in the tray, hold the stack of paper, and then tap the bottom edge on a flat surface so that the stack is even on all sides.
- Make sure that the length and width adjusters on the tray are correctly positioned, and then push the stack of paper forward until it stops in the tray.
CAUTION:Do not force the paper to move too far forward in the tray. - Do not overload the tray with paper.
- Only add paper to the tray when the product is not printing.
- Make sure the HP product supports the paper type. See the documentation that came with the HP product for more information.
- Do not print on paper with paper clips or staples attached.
- Do not use paper that is bent, torn, dusty, damp, wrinkled, curled, or paper that does not lie flat.
- Use only one type of paper at a time. Do not mix different types, weights, or sizes of paper.
- Do not use paper that is too thin, too thick, or too glossy for the product.
Causes of paper jams
The following factors can cause paper jams:
- Paper loaded incorrectly in the paper tray.
- Damaged or dirty paper rollers.
- Torn, wrinkled, or damp paper loaded in the paper tray.
- The rear access door or two-sided printing accessory (duplexer) might not be closed or is not locked into place.
- Paper was added to a stack already in the tray while the HP product was printing.
- The tray contains more than one type of paper.
- The paper is jammed inside the HP product where you cannot see it.
- An obstruction is blocking the paper path.
- Torn pieces of paper from a previous jam are stuck in the product.
- The tray is too full.
- If printing on an envelope, the edges of the envelope are bent.
Step one: Remove any loose paper
Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

CAUTION:Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the
print mechanism.
Step two: Clear the paper jam from the base of the All-in-One
Use the following steps to check for and remove jammed paper from the base of the HP printer.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn off the product. - Disconnect the USB cable from the back of the product.
- Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
- Turn the product so that you can access its underside (base).
- Press in the tabs on either side of the cleanout door to open it.
- Gently remove any jammed paper from inside the product.
CAUTION:If the paper tears while removing it, check inside the door for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur. - Reattach the cleanout door. Gently push the door forward until it snaps into place.
- Reconnect the power cord to the back of the product.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product.
Step three: Clear the jam from inside the All-in-One
- Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Gently remove any paper that is jammed inside the printer.
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Step four: Clear the jam from the front of the All-in-One
If you cannot remove the jam from the base or inside the printer, follow these steps to remove the paper jam from the front.
- Press the Power button to turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Grasp the jammed paper with both hands and slowly pull it from the front of the printer.
NOTE:If the paper tears while removing it, check for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the printer, more paper jams are likely to occur. - Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Step five: Reset the All-in-One
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product. - With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 15 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button (
) to turn it on.
Step six: Print a self-test report
Printing a self-test report verifies if the hardware functions correctly. Follow these steps to print a self-test report.
- Press the button next to Setup on the printer control panel (

Solution three: Make sure that the carriage moves freely
Follow these steps in the order given to make sure that the carriage moves freely.
Step one: Check the carriage
Follow these steps to make sure that the carriage can move freely.
- Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
- Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.
- Without turning off the printer, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
WARNING:You must disconnect the power cord to allow you to move the carriage by hand and to reset the paper feed mechanism without the risk of an electrical shock. - Look inside the printer to see where the carriage is stuck, and then check for any torn paper or other objects that might be restricting the carriage. You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
CAUTION:If the paper tears when you remove it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If pieces of paper remain in the printer, more paper jams might occur. - Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.
- Reach inside the printer through the cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage.
- If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the printer , move the carriage to the left side of the printer.
- If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the printer , move the carriage to the right side of the printer.
- If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the printer , move the carriage to the right side of the printer.
- Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the printer. Firmly push the carriage to the left side of the printer, and then to the right side.
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Step two: Print a self-test report
Printing a self-test report verifies if the hardware functions correctly. Follow these steps to print a self-test report.
- Press the button next to Setup on the printer control panel (
). - Press the button next to Printer Report on the printer control panel (
).The self-test report prints.

Solution four: Remove and reinstall the cartridges
Improper placement or installation of the cartridges can cause the printer to indicate a carriage jam error. Follow these steps to remove and then reinstall the cartridges.
Step one: Remove the cartridges
- Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before continuing.
- Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.
- Press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot.
CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. - Check for obstructions under and around the carriage. Clear any obstructions that you find. You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.
Step two: Reinstall the cartridges
Follow these steps to reinstall the cartridges. Repeat the steps for each cartridge.
- Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the printer, and then insert the cartridge into its slot. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot.
- The tri-color cartridge (
) goes in the slot on the left. - The black cartridge (
) goes in the slot on the right.
- Push the cartridge forward into its slot until it snaps into place.
- Repeat these steps to remove and reinstall the other cartridge.
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Step three: Print a self-test report

- Plug the power cord directly into an electrical outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product. - Try the task again.If the issue persists, try a different electrical outlet.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution one: Make sure that the All-in-One is plugged in
Follow these steps to make sure that the power cord is connected to the rear of the printer and plugged into an electrical outlet.
- Check the rear of the printer to make sure that the cord from the power supply is inserted securely into the power connection.
- Check the power supply to make sure that the power cord is plugged in securely.
- Check the electrical outlet to make sure that the power cord is plugged in securely.
- Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
- If the printer turns on , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the printer does not turn on , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Make sure that the electrical outlet works
- Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
- Plug another appliance into the electrical outlet to make sure that the outlet works.
- If the electrical outlet does not work , plug the printer into another outlet that does work.
- If the electrical outlet works, but the printer still does not turn on , continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Make sure that the power supply is compatible with the HP All-in-One
The term power supply
refers to both the power module and the power cord.

NOTE:To make sure that your printer and power supply are compatible, HP suggests you use the original power supply shipped with your printer.
- Make sure that the voltage and amperage specifications printed on the power supply match the voltage and amperage specifications printed on the HP printer.
- If the voltage and amperage specifications of the printer and the power supply are compatible, make sure that the connector on the power cord is the same shape and size as the connector on the HP printer.
WARNING:Do not force an incompatible power cord (its plug has a different shape or size than the HP printer's electrical connection) into an HP printer.- If the power cord is not compatible with the printer, replace the power cord with a compatible cord. To buy a compatible cord, right-click the following link, How to Buy HP , and then click Open in New Window .
- If the power cord is compatible with the printer, but the printer still does not turn on, continue to the next solution.
Solution four: Reset the power module, and then test the power
The power module has a safety feature that protects the printer during a power surge. If you experienced a recent power surge, the power module might need to be reset. Follow these steps to reset the power module.
Step one: Reset the power module
- Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
- Unplug the power cord from the power module.
- Wait 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Plug the power cord back into the power module.
- Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge protector until after the issue is resolved.
- Check to see if the power module has an LED light.
- If the power module does not have an LED light , continue to the next step.
- If the power module has an LED light , check to see if the LED lights up.
- If the LED does not light up, contact HP to replace the power module. To buy a compatible power module, right-click the following link, How to Buy HP , and then click Open in New Window .
- If the LED lights up, continue to the next step.
Step two: Test the power on the All-in-One
Follow these steps to test the power on the printer.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Press, and then quickly release the Power button to start a power on/off cycle. Do not hold the button down.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution five: Test the power with a compatible power cord from a different printer
If you have another available power cord that is compatible with your printer, use the alternate cord to repeat the steps in Solution three: Reset the power module and test the power

- If the printer does not turn on with the alternate power cord, continue to the next solution.
